Any of your snakes still Fasting?

My snake has been off feeding since september, it now has 6 months without eating... last year it started feeding after 5 months... is it because of the crazy weather here in cali? All the temps & humidity are just fine... my snake is starting to look skinny but has only lost 200g since the last meal is this ok? I was just wondering if I'm the only one still in the fasting period...

i live in central cali and my snakes are feeding just fine.... what part of cali are you in.... do you have a thermistat a rack or are the in glass setup?

I live in LA... yes I do have a thermostat & temps read from 88*F - 92*F... the ambient temp is in the high 70s & I hav e her in a glass tank... I'm switching to tubs maybe by the end of this year, they seem to be warmer & keep temps steady

it will keep temps more steady i had the same problems with the plastic tubs the cant see out like they can in a tank....wich gives them more security oh btw.... are you feeding live or dead and is he a juvinile or adult

I still have one thats off feed. He has been about 6.5 months. Try a rat that is way too small for them. With my girl that wasn't eating for about 5.5 months, I just tried a little fat fuzzy rat and she ate it, then the next week I gave her 2 of those about 20 minutes apart, and now for the past 2 weeks she has been eating her regular size small rats. Give the smaller prey a chance!

For the one still fasting, I haven't tried the fat fuzzy yet since he just shed, but I tried an ASF and he wasn't diggin it.

My 10 month old male normal was on a 43 day fast until just a few days ago. I ended up giving him a rat pup which he just hogged right up. Sometimes smaller prey is the way to go for a snake that is fasting.

It is when your snake stops eating for a period of time.

I had a young (700g) albino male end his four and a half month fast 5 days ago. I fed him a weanling when he was eating small rats before his fast started.

my girl has eaten a few times since her fast started in dec., but i want to say for the most part she's still fasting since she's still acting finicky and usually eats weekly without a problem.

my year and a half year old male went from Nov 20,2010 to May 5,2011..started out at 595 G and was 495 G when he resumed feeding.Another possibility you may want checked out is maybe a visit to your vet.as it turned out he had an RI arks Respiratory infection that took 2 different antibiotics to cure.watch her behavior when shes active,look for mucous bubbles in the mouth,see if she props her head up more than usual.and sometimes an audible wheezing hopefully she is just being a BP,as you probably know they can be very picky eaters.hope this helps and good luck

She's 2 1/2 yrs old so I'm thinking she's an adult already... before she went off feeding she would feed on pre-killed medium sized rats... I also previously tried to offer her a small rat just how I did last year when she resume feeding but this time she just shows no type of interest in it... should I get a smaller rat?

One more thing she is more active than the previous months & I also hear some type of wheezing u could say but it's rare when she does it... I took her to the vet & gladly she doesn't have RI... she still seems to do it 'til todays date but like I said it's very very rare when she does it... what can this be? Also no she doesn't have shed stuck in her nostrils or anything like that

My longest fasting male just started eating again last week. He is always the first to stop eating and the last to start back. He is a breeding machine. He will try to breed anything he can get ahold of including other males. He had been off feed since Nov. I only had one female for him this year and I think he was holding out hoping I would throw him a few more.

Have you tried offering live small prey? Maybe even offer a mouse instead of rat. I know that sometimes it can be difficult to switch them from mice to rats, but some BPs seem to prefer the taste of mice. Might be worth a try to get him to start eating again then worry about switching back to rats when he's eating steadily.

As for the "very rare" wheezing sound, it could be a small, almost unnoticeable piece of stuck shed in his nose causing this, since you said the vet has cleared him of having a respiratory infection.

Also, you should refer to THIS thread addressing a similar dilemma. There has been a few good tips and tricks given to encourage feeding. :)

It is unusual for a female to go off feed during breeding season! During this time they usually eat like crazy! If she is very active then it is probably stress related! I would cover all the sides and top and make sure she as a tight fitting hide on each end of the tank! I would leave her completely allow for a week then try feeding. That will reduce the stress and hopefully she will start eating! Good luck!
