Need Cage Advice ASAP!!
So I found out the apartment complex I am moving into does monthly checks and so therefore I need a more camo like snake rack so they do not notice it when they walk into the room. Any suggestions as to who I should purchase from? I have looked and Bophile Plastics and they have a nice tub/rack design...any help would be welcomed so I can order asap!!

Turn wardrobe into rack. Close the doors and nobody knows. :P
-
I thought of that but I am worried about mold...humidity and wood do by agree unless I take a lot of time to prep the wardrobe.
-
I've never heard of an apartment complex doing monthy checks. I take it they have a no-pet policy? I guess you could get a rack on wheels and move it when they come check, but it would be better to try to come to some agreement with them or find a new apartment. Keeping pets hidden is never a good idea. I wanted to get a BP 4 years ago, but the apartment I was living wouldn't allow it. If you decide to hide them just be careful.
-
They allow pets just not my kind of pets. I see them as less dangerous as a dog. Well if I got a rack and put a light curtain over it..then it would look like a dresser. The checks are random I wouldn't know :(
-
Get a black rack, and black silk sheet. When they come over put sheet over it and lamp on top of it.
Keep in mind this is going against the lease contract you signed so if caught your OUT.
-
I know :( no apartments in the Augusta area allow snakes. And being a new graduate I can't afford a house :(

I am absolutely certain that they can NOT legally do random checks (or checks without 24 hr notice) in GA without your written consent. Though if it's in the lease or other doc that you signed, that is consent. I would look into a new apartment to live in, SERIOUSLY. If you have already signed the lease, you can still get out of it under GA law.

Ugh :( I think a little less bulky and obvious rack may help. Any suggestions as to a seller?
-
No, seriously. Don't take crap from shady land lords. I assure you, you can find better.

They were one if the safest complexes in Augusta. Where are apartment complexes that accept snakes? I don't any at all.

Snakes don't make noise, don't smell, you don't walk them. Don't mention the snakes, and don't parade them around in public like a bafoon, and you'll be fine. No one would know!
Just find an apartment complex that does not do random checks. Also very worthwhile, as a renter you should be familiar with the state's rent laws. You can find them online, and in GA they will send you a nice little booklet.
I own my home now, but in my college years I sure dealt with my own fare share crazy landlords. And guess what? I educated myself on the rent laws and discovered that a certain landlord's activities (random checks) were illegal. I brought that up, and it stopped REAL quick. I also left, and found an apartment from a MUCH better landlord.
Educate yourself, be assertive, don't take crap.

Thanks Lizard Pants for the advice! I start work soon and don't have the time to look for another place and plus I paid rent and signed the lease already :( I will just take it a month at a time and see how it goes. And keep a lookout for a new place as well!

Yep yep. I live in WA and no one but maintenance has bothered to enter my apt in the 4 years Ive lived here. They legally have to give 24 hrs notice if they or a contractor will be entering the apt, too. Its very nice. I actually have two cats theyve never noticed/said anything about.
-
I believe it is just maintenance guys as well to change filters and do work orders and what not. I don't think they would say anything. But, we shall see.

They can't do random unannounced checks. That is a good way to get shot in the face where I'm from. Could you imagine, you live by yourself. You are the only one with the key. You wake up from an afternoon nap and some ahole you don't know is standing in your apartment. I shoot people like that. I don't know about you.

I second this.

By law they can randomly show up to your apartment unannounced. But its illegal for them to walk right into your apartment without your permission. If Police need a warrant , they will need one as well.
My friend gets monthly inspections as well, the managers walk around knocking on doors, if no answer they move on. If after 2 attempts of knocking they send out a letter and tape it to the door stating you must be here on this day or eviction is put in place.

assuming the random checks are legal due to some part of the rental contract, they still aren't allowed to touch or move any of your property, so even a minimally concealed (i.e.-sheet) enclosure should be fine. I too have to deal with this (not random checks, but no pet policy), and it's stressful at times but not impossible.

About 8 yrs ago i worked at an apartment complex where wed have to go do maintenance in diff apts and sometimes the occupants werent there...one time i went to one apt and i saw 3 100 gal tanks...but only 2 snakes....rtbs which didnt freak me out and no i didnt turn them in but since i had to be in there by myself i did want to know if the 3rd one had snuck out or was it not there...i never found out and their shower stall was back in working order.
Oh btw if you look around, there is armoirs that are pretty big and you can retrofit it to hold your snakes in tubs. They have 2 doors and the humidity wouldnt be so much that youd have no problem but if youd like, you could seal the inside with a coat of polyurethane and that will take care of any of the humidity getting into the wood itself. Good luck

25 years ago I hid a rattle snake in a 30 gallon aquarium in a HUD housing project! They do yearly inspections. I simply put the tank on the floor and covered it with a blanket and put the laundry hamper on top of it ;)
What I would do in your case is buy a used dresser and hollow it out inside. Bust apart the drawers than attach the dresser drawer fronts permanently to the front of the cabinet. Turn it around and arrange your rack inside any way you please. When they come for inspection simply turn it around so the front is facing the room where all can be seen is the fake dresser drawer fronts. After they leave turn it back around!

I'd go over the lease and see what you signed. I lived at this place in Indiana and the landlord tried to tell me it was their property and could come in at any time they felt like it (which is obviously a lie). As a tenent, you have a right to "peaceful habitation of residence", which allows them no access whatsoever to the inside, with the exception of stuff like maintenaence (they have to let you know when they are coming), or an emergency. I can't think of the legal term, I know it's not called peaceful habitation, but it's something close like that. I had 3 BP's, and 2 corns in my apartment that they never knew about. Let me pull out my Business Law book, and I'll get back to you.
