Witnessed a terrible incident today, I need cheering up.
So I was driving home from work today, it's kind of cool and pretty breezy, so I was rather surprised to spot a snake of some kind in the road near my home.

I slowed down to see where it was headed, when another car heading the opposite direction came around the corner. This car also spotted the snake, and deliberately swerved into my lane to hit it.

Fortunately I was already nearly at a stop, or I would have been hit as well. The car was going so fast, the poor snake rebounded a foot off the road after the front tire hit it, then the back one hit it too. The car then swerved back into it's lane, barely missing me and laying on the horn at me the whole time.

I hit my flashers and got out, I was hoping against hope that perhaps the car had gotten it's tail and it might be saved. It was writhing in the middle of the center stripe, but when I got closer I could see the head was crushed. :tears:

It stopped moving very quickly, and I pray it died instantly and never even knew what happened. I couldn't bear to leave it there to be run over again, even though it was already dead. So I found a stick on the side of the road, gently picked up the body and let it fall down into the creek along side the road.

I was crying by the time I got back to my car. How could someone be so cruel ?

I don't even know what species it was. Just a cornsnake sized animal, greyish brown with reddish stripes.

    Poor thing. :tears:

Some people are so cruel... I have seen people do the same thing to dogs and cats. It makes me sick.... Lucky for me I have gotten license plates, and got to report them... Sorry that you had to go through this though....

    Hopefully karma gets them back....

Snakes bring out the stupid in some people. I am hunter and outdoorsman and belong to several online communities. I have seen sooo many people BRAG about killing snakes for no reason - some of which are protected species in GA like the Eastern Indigo and Southern Hognose.

I can't tell you how many times i've seen some fool post a picture of a Northern Water Snake and state how he done did kilt him a Cottonmouth...

    Frustrating...

I've seen this happen before too. People suck and it makes me sick to my stomach. It against the law to purposly swerve towards an animal in most states- I would have turned in their licence plate number. I'm sorry about your crappy day:(

That is wrong. I have seen people change lanes to hit vultures, dogs, cats, snakes, and even protected species of hawk. There are Bald Eagles in the area I live in and I have seen people swerve to hit those (luckily they missed.) People here always brag about killing a snake. They talk like they are all big and bad. You killed a harmless, defensive animal and your proud of yourself? Some man YOU are.

I live in a small town in central Texas. This is redneck headquarters. I know rednecks, and they are ALWAYS talking about how they killed this or that, shot this but it didn't die so they nailed a spike through its face into a tree (yes, one really did that.) One person even shot a coyote that was 300 yards away from their house. They didn't even have cattle and even if they did coyotes rarely go after things so large. The K9 was 3 football fields away from your house, yet you STILL feel the need to kill it? What the hell is wrong with you?

One time I was at my locas state park wih 2 friends. One being a full blown redneck hick and one just a guy like me. The parks creek was completley dry, so you could walk through it and find all kinds of wildlife. We found multiple animals, snakes, frogs, turtles, stranded fish, etc. Then we came across this big, beautiful Red Eared Slider--one of the biggest I've ever seen-- and you know what the hick wanted to do to it? He looked at us, completley serious, whipped out a 7 inch knife and said in an evil, demonic voice (yes, it sounded demonic) and calmly said "Lets kill it and leave he body here to rot."

I looked at my friend in awe, and he looked back at me with that same look and feeling. I said "Sure, put it in that pile of logs so it cant get out and we'll come back after lunch and then we'll kill it". He believed me, and while walking in the woods going back we ditched his stupid A$$ and went back. My friend and I got the turtle and let it go in a part of a creek that still had a lot of water. Now, I hope he's living happily with his buddies.

    People suck. Thats it.

There was a thread very similar to this on another forum, after somebody hit a cal king on purpose, she had to pull over and put it out of it's misery because it was still alive. :tears:

Humans are the most widespread parasite on Earth, really. I'm not sure why people think they have the right to kill an animal for "fun" or "because they are common." Humans are common. Maybe to put things into perspective, that person should be forced to run over a loved one, and if they have a conscience it just might teach them something.

Ugh, that is terrible! People are ignorant and cruel. When I spot any kind of animal on the road I always try to slow down to avoid it or stop get it off the road. The only thing we can do it try to educate the ones we know and try to save those we can. That and kick the asses of and report those jerks who hurt animals for sport. :[

Re: Witnessed a terrible incident today, I need cheering up.
I am gonna have to play devil's advocate here.

I am not going to defend the person but I can certainly understand them. You see I have several family members and friends who grew up in the country or who were raised by country folk. In the country, "the only good snake is a dead snake." Sure there are exceptions to this. Some farmers understand that snakes help control rodents so they leave them be. But a lot can't tell the difference between a venomous and non-venomous snake and kill any snake to be safe.

I can pretty much guess that this person thought they were being the good guy. In their mind, by killing it they were preventing it from hurting someone else that might run across it. They were also probably wondering why you had stopped to let it cross and think of you in negative ways.

Generally, these type people aren"t stupid or mean. They just don't know any better because of how they were raised and what they were taught.

I guess it depends on your definition of stupid. Ignorant is ignorant no matter how you cut it....and there is plenty of it here in GA...

Re: Witnessed a terrible incident today, I need cheering up.
well no matter the reason behind the killing it will be considered a senseless act of cruelty to most if not all animal lovers.
unfortunately my dad is one who goes with that "a good snake is a dead snake" thing but he knows better then to say stuff like that to or around me cuz i'm a major animal lover. the only snake he will flat out kill without so much as a second thought are the rattlers he encounters at the house. he kills them cuz they've wandered too close to our home and he didnt want to chance one of us accidently stepping on one and now continues his protective vigil for my nieces who are usually there. he doesnt go out to hunt them he just kills them when he discovers them, which is usually by him almost stepping on them himself, go figure.
so anyways, to the op - i'm sorry you had to witness that and i'm with you on hoping the poor thing passed on quickly.
