possible het?
im new here and im not exactly sure about hets and stuff like that but ive been doing alot of research on breeding and im interested but thats not what this thread is about i currently have only on BP and i got him as a normal from petsmart.. but i noticed he has a wobble could that mean he is het spider? or can it be normal in regular ball pythons too?
-
Wobbles can occur from overheats. As well as headtilting, and corkscrewing. Not saying this is what happened but it's a possibility.
-
Spider is a dominant trait, therefore if it doesn't look like a spider, its not a spider.
Only recessive traits look like normals in the heterozygous (het) form.
Any snake can display a wobble, but with it not being a spider, it could mean there are other issues, If its not too late take it back to the store and buy from a real breeder, if not all you can do is keep him/her away form other snakes and watch and see how they do. I won't get into the "It could be this, could be that" because it could be nothing.
hows your husbandry? temps correct? cage set up correctly?

there is no such thing as a het spider. your snake could just be hungry and with you looking at him he is waiting to see if you are going to feed him. just like a puppy waiting for a treat.:)

Just to clarify, there is no normal-appearing "het" for Spider. A ball python is either a Spider (visible) or not. :)
What was your snake doing when it showed the wobbling behavior? Is this something that happens frequently?
-
ive had him for 6 months now and hes very healthy he takes all the food i introduce and one side of the tank is 84 or 85ish and the other side has an UTH and keeps it about the same temp on that side sometimes the temps drop a little below 80 can it be due to underheating too?

I know we don't don't say het spider, but every spider is heterozygous (het) actually.

If it has been 6 months it is most likely a neurological disorder (not genetic) specific to this animal with an unknown cause. Cause could have been trauma or defect. Most diseases that would make the snake appear to wobble would have killed the snake by now. Your temps seem okay for ambient but you should have a hot spot 90-93 F.

hahah i know you can flame if you want im still trying to learn i hope to learn enough by the time breeding season comes up so i can get to doin it :) and i dont know wat to do to raise the temp that high i have a heat lamp on one side and UTH on the other the UTH is my newest heating thing i had a cheapo one that burnt out b4 this one it definitly seems be be better its made from heat tape but has a built in thermostat

in case your not making a joke (the rolling eyes is kinda of ambiguous)
in short...
Heterozygous means having Mismatched Alleles
Homozygous means having the same Allele
few examples...

incorrect, 90-93 is a reasonable hot side. I keep my rack at 92 hot and 81 cold. you need to have some degree of variance so the snake can thermoregulate properly.

lol i was gonna say something like that too spiders are dominate morphs meaning they dont have super forms so they cant be het spiders i wish cause my ideas of super spiders would be amazing for combos but you can have spider het caramel albino or pied but no normal het spiders just like you cant have normal het mojave lol

I can understand why you would say that because of how people talk snake lingo, however...
Being a dominant morph means the heterozygous (het) form and homozygous (super) form look exactly a like. You can see this with the pinstripe and congo.
There however is know homozygous spider, therefore every spider is heterozygous (het) spider. In the case of mojave, mojave would be the heterzygous (het) form and super mojave would be the homozygous form. so all mojaves are also hets.
How ever the snake lingo drops alot of these words to shorten things up, we normally only say hets with talking about recessives, but actually every morph has a heterozygous and homozygous form (spider is still up for debate on the homozygous thing)
-
I've always wondered if you breed a spider to a spider if you have a chance to breed a homozygous spider that looks like a spider (no visual super). You won't be able to tell if it is homozygous until you breed it to a normal and get all spiders out the clutch.
Of course if you breed a spider to a normal then you have a chance to get all spiders out of the clutch (awesome odds:gj:). You would need to breed said homo-spider to a number of normal females to determine if it is homozygous.....
But then there is talk that the spider is a sort of suicide gene that when a homozygous is formed in the egg it will die before hatching, hence no super is born...
I dunno, for now i sit on the 'there is no super spider' side of the fence, if one had been hatched we would all know about it cause spiders have been around for ages.
