hey guys, so i was wondering, what is ur favorite cat? I was also thinking of getting one myself, but not anytime soon. I like cats that do not shed much, does require a lot of grooming, and basically likes to play around.

Sphinx cats, you never have to worry about grooming, or shedding.

I have...cat-cats. I got one from a shelter and one off of craigslist. They don't have a breed type, just "cat" They're my babies. I'd recommend brushing once a week for short haired cats to cut down on the shed fur.

Turkish Angora by far! I'd always loved the way they look. Soft and lean, etc.. They have a single coat. One layer of medium length, silky fur. No undercoat like most cats. They shed much less than domestics. I saw a show about the breed and did more research. When I found out how sweet and dog-like they are, intelligent, talkative, persistent, playful, lovable, etc, I had to have one..

I got super lucky one day while searching CL. It started when I answered an add for pure bred TAs. The guy was kind of rude. Said he wouldn't hold one for me for a day. First come first serve. Said they bred their cats just to make a few extra $$ and to have kittens around once on awhile. He sent a photo a female with amber eyes and a distinctive black spot between her ears.

I didn't get her. Then a few months later I answer an add by a cat rescue. The lady lived in the same neighborhood near the airport that the angora breeder lived. She had rescued a young female white angora that had the dark spot and amber eyes. She was on the streets, sick, dehydrated, and emaciated.

She spent time at a vet on fluids and meds before I took her home. I know it was the same cat and while I didn't buy her from the breeder, I ended up adopting her and saving her life.

The dark spot has since grown out and she is now solid white. Her personality is such that when I get home at night, I look forward to her greeting me at the door and spending the rest of the evening hanging out with me.

They truly are everything that breed info sites say they are. Did I mention they feel like silk?? Lol

Scottish folds are adorable and have quite the reputation for being snuggly, playful lap cats.

Personally, I have a pair of mutt cats from the street. :P

Bengals are cool. I love Savannahs, but they're illegal in GA, and Bengals are only legal here if it's an F3 or greater. My wife and I share the love (and mischief) of an Abysinian. He's like a monkey in a cat's body. He's total clown, he enjoys making us laugh.

Amen ;) I would add - the cat that you keep in your house and don't allow to terrorize the neighborhood. So many in my neighborhood have "outdoor" cats that scratch the hood of my car and harass my wifes foo foo dogs...

Shelter cats. But if you want to go by breeds, the Turkish Angora or the Turkish Van, because they have this amazing luxurious coat, super sociable, active, and pretty easy on grooming because they don't shed all that much since they don't really have an undercoat. And a lot of them like the water too!

Sphynx kitties! Our little Frankenstein is by far the coolest cat I've ever met. From day one, he's just gone with the flow of our household. He is now the king of the dogs. :P And he actually going to start his therapy cat program this month. He's responded very well to clicker training and I'm very pleased with his progress so far. He does require a bath, at least once a month, and semi-regular ear-cleaning. I tend to do his nails and ears every two weeks or so. Here's some pics of my naked little man...

    Amen to both. :)
We had 2 cats (my wifes cats) but now we have none. Both passed away from old age. Take a Black Light at night sometime to your kitchen and see where your kitty has been after the litter box. :O Sorry, no more cats for both of us. We love them, but they are not staying in my house. :)

I want a cat so. BAD. ;o; I had one, but she isn't around any longer due to medical issues.

I've been regularly stalking bengal and savannah kitten websites. <3 I have my heart set on an f1 Savannah kitten.. but that will have to wait! lol I'm hoping to get a snow bengal in the next few years. (I hope, hope, hope sooner.)

My black kitty from the pound is a super cat. He doesn't shed much either.

My favorites are the mixed breeds (aka "domestic short/longhair"), but in terms of purebreds I'm a Siamese & Abyssinian fan... my family has owned many of those, and they're pretty cool kitties! Shedding is to be expected from ANY cat, with the exception of a few hairless or curly-haired breeds, but Siamese & Abys aren't too bad. And if you want a playful cat, these would definitely fit the bill. I'm also a huge fan of Persians & Himalayans, but you said "doesn't shed much," LOL. ;)

Here's my Siamese mix Kona, in her younger days... she's almost 14 now.

And this is my mom's blue Abyssinian, Jasmine.

Oh, and if you want a NON-shedding cat, maybe consider a Cornish or Devon Rex. My relatives are really into those, and I admit they're nice cats... kinda weird looking, though.

    My cat.

But in all seriousness get a short-haired cat. My cat was a rescue and is a medium to long haired cat...I had no idea what I was getting into.

This is poor information.. IF a cat stops using the litter box and starts eliminating elsewhere that means there is a problem. Either 1. The litter box is too dirty, clean it or 2. the animal has a medical problem; most likely urinary crystals/infection/etc, kidney problems or something else. What you should do if your cat starts peeing in places they shouldn't is take them to the vet, not kick them outside. Male cats especially are prone to urinary issues, if you're going to own one (and I own two) you need to know what to look for, not only to save your stuff or your carpet but to keep your cat healthy.

Theres so much bad info floating around on cats; "they need to be declawed or else everything in your house will be distroyed" "they'll pee on your stuff JUST to spite you" "theres never nice cats they all bite/scratch". None of that is true at all.

He did not say his cats were urinating everywhere ;), but that you could see where they had been after going to their litter box ;)

A black light would help see paw prints as well ;)

I always considered myself a dog person, but we got an Orange Tabby cat a few years ago. He's a pretty cool outdoor country cat with a great personality and with seemingly more than the traditional 9 lives.

The only thing I have a hard time getting used to are his "trophies" he leaves for us. He usually takes down gophers, moles and the occasional rat or mouse, but this morning he left a half-eaten rabbit which looked about half of his size. :O

And yes, we feed him well on regular cat food, but he likes to eat his prey as well.

I think it totally depends on what you are looking for, personality-wise. Bengals are extremely playful, independent, smart and have silky, gorgeous coats. They're a little on the nutty side for me sometimes and can get into trouble. I had to take in one of my brother's cats when one of his bengals (all cats are neutered/spayed) decided that she was prey instead of a playmate. She was extremely skinny and fearful when I took her, but has come around wonderfully. Also, I've only seen one bengal that was a good vet patient. As much as I like them, I hate working with them.

I think Egyptian Maus are overlooked. They look pretty wild, but are a little calmer. They're hard to find though. Abyssinians would maybe fit well also, but they can be a little nutty too, and aren't really snuggly. Japanese Bobtails have great personalities and shouldn't be too hairy. I haven't seen much shedding with Cornish Rexes, but all the Devon Rexes I've seen shed a lot.

Right now I have the girl (DMH - nothing special), an old Siamese cross and a Maine Coon. I love my big, goofy, clutzy Maine Coon, and he's nine now and still acts like a kitten. He has way too much hair for you though. :P My personal preference is not for the dainty little cats.
