What snake will be the "next ball python?"
So I heard that about 10 years ago, corns were the biggest thing in the snake trade. It seems like BPs have pretty much dominated the industry with all the stylish morphs for the past decade. But does anybody foresee a new trendy snake making it big anytime soon?

I personally think it might be the hognose. They seem to be rapidly growing, and they are so unique. I know a lot of people don't like colubrids, but they are darn cute.

I think carpets and all type of dwarf Boas and Bloods... I think BP craze happens from 3 main reasons..
    a)they have very manageable size...
    b) morphs possibility are endless..
    c) they are vehy calm and handle able animals...

With growing availability and nicer and nicer morphs "Carpets" gonna be next big hit in my opinion... but if captive breeding outgrow Bloods temper they can get to the top as well...

Disclaimer: This is my private opinion ;)

I would say carpet pythons also, carpets have a lot of variety to offer. While they typically get bigger than ball pythons, their still manageable and once people get over the stupid stereotype, they will find they are just as calm as ball pythons.

I doubt any colubrid will be able to hit the popularity that corns and balls have.

No single species is going to have the explosion that ball pythons have.

To have that kind of growth, there needs to be an extreme influx of "new stuff", and we aren't going to see that kind of "new stuff" at the rate that we saw new ball python morphs.

maybe this question has been answered already but why is it that there are so many more variations of bp morphs than other snakes?

I think that hognoses are going to be exciting a lot of people. They're already gaining in populariy.

Good question, I've wondered that myself. It's a perfect storm.

I also think it's going to be the hognose's ... i have already found a few people breeding them and even a few vendors who only deal with these snakes! :gj: And their a reasonable size too

Because of huge import of new babies from Africa new morph pop up more often... If for example Australia have more liberal export law we will see way more carpet pythons morphs on the market...

I'm pretty excited about the hognose. They are a little bit small for my taste but still something different.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to say either carpets or hoggies, as far as collectors go. After corns and bps, they're probably the most popular. As for the casual pet trade, I think corns and bps are still the most popular, but Cali kings aren't very far behind at all.

Alien invasion. They're infiltrating our homes disguised as awesomeness.

I am hoping to see angolan pythons come around. However they are only found in two countries in a couple of countries in africa so that is not likely to happen.

I dont think we will see anything probably in our lifetime to top ball pythons or that will match the seemingly endless mutations they offer.

    Hognose?
I have 4 hoggies which are really cute and awesome however, they still dont have the potential that hoggies do because its illegal to imort new morphs from the wild and u have to get a license to own them.

Re: What snake will be the "next ball python?"
ball pythons and corns are the easiest to obtain from the wild which is the cause for the popularity among other things (size, morphs, longevity, temper) boas dont have the same range in color mutations yes many different locales and many different sizes but bps are almost all same size and all from one place.
retics too big, burms too big, carpets a definite contender if it was easier to obtain them

i would love it if australia changed their laws i would go hunt down a whole lot of them and bring them back if i could then again i've been to australia once and swore if i go back i wont ever leave, beautiful country!

This is exactly the reason why Australia's export laws are so strict. Since almost all of their animals are endemic, they want to protect them from being swept up illegally to get into the pet or skin trades.

I wish it were carpets. Morphs are limited at this point, but that doesn't take away from thier awesomeness. Give it time, they will have thier day.

I don't know if you guys wanted this thread to die because the last post was in April or so, but when I saw the title of it, "Hognose" popped into my head!

I think that Hognoses (of any kind, but maybe mainly Western) will be the next big thing. RTB and Carpets are good contenders, but I think RTBs get too large for a lot of people, and Carpets a little snippy at times (it may defer people?)

Who knows! I guess only time will tell.
