Collection

Someone beat me to it but I am going to ask anyway. I want opinions on my collection. I just started the BP thing a couple of months ago and I cannot wait to breed. I picked up the last of my start up collection at the Columbus Expo this past Saturday. A wonderful female 640 gram Mojave. Can't believe I found her they are so hard to find. Any way please rate my collection. And pray for some Blue Eyes as my two that will be ready to breed first are my male Lesser and my female Mojave.

Here is what I have
1.0 Pinstripe
1.0 Lesser
1.0 Cinnamon
0.1 Mojave
0.1 Pastel
0.1 Spider

need more female.

You're heavy on the males. You should have a nice double gene male and 4-6 females IMO! Good start just should have invested in a double gene male and lots of single gene females if you're planning to breed!

Better collection then I'll ever see. I heard you should have at least 3 males to every 1 female.

Should be the other way around 3 females to every male. I agree with having double gene males. Makes breeding them more worthwhile. Though it's not a big deal if you don't bc you could breed your own and hold back for the first 4 years. I personally enjoyed breeding them myself. Then you could trade up or do something different when you hatch those first double gene clutches if you choose to do so. Get your females together and get them going. Depending on the ages of the females you have plenty of time to get more females or double gene males.

Pictures would help. To me...The quality of the animal is more important than anything. Sounds like a nice start and I agree...You need some more females.

I agree too with more females but I was working with a limited budget to get everything set up. I only spent a total of $1450 on all the snakes so I thought I got a good deal to start with the single gene instead of the double genes. It would have cost me a whole lot more.

Also this is a long term project. I am in no hurry. I was planning on breeding my own double gene snakes for the fun of it and to save the money in the process. I was not looking to make a quick buck this is a long term/ retirement hobby (can retire in 15 years lol). I figured if i could start up cheap and work my way up it would benefit me in the long run even though it will take some time to get my double gene males and females. But that is what I wanted to do work on it with my wife.

if u low in budget n plan for long term,here is my suggestion.buy 6 2 years old normal female.breed with ur male(each male=2 normal+1 morph).then u will get het bp.breed them again n u will get more lesser,pinstripe n cinnamon.or you can sell het bp n buy another female morphs.

if u plan to sell them,follow my advice here:

produce more single gene bp,a small amount of double gene n a very small amount of 3 or 4 gene bp.not many people can buy expensive double or triple gene bp.so they always looking for single gene bp to produce themself.if u just produce expensive bp,maybe it hard to sell them.

As a long term goal then you are looking pretty good. You can add some normal females in here and there. And bulk up your female stock or If you find a good deal on another single gene breedable girl add her in. It does depend in quality. But it's great to start from scratch! You go a little slower and that's not a bad thing. It's good to start slow and the animals benefit from it enormously. I love breeding because I enjoy it. I have 10 holdbacks from my now 4 years experience and it's wonderful to watch them grow! Then when you get multiple generations and see how the line grows and benefits, and changes with different genes that's truly amazing.

We were also at the show! Nice pickup! That's a good sized female and less waiting for you to get her to size. The BELS are our plan as well for probly next year. We may try to invest in an adult lesser or mojo female for this year instead of waiting for ours to get to weight. We went home with a female fire. You can never go to a show and not take somethin home lol.

I know i need to quit going to shows and work on what i got. i am running out of money and every show i have been too I have walked away with something.

I honestly feel you can't be too male heavy. Just because you plan on paring certain males doesn't mean they will get the job done. Basically, I like having extra males as back-ups. For instance, we screwed our selves this year because we sold our het pied male before we knew if our pied male would be a good breeder. Ended up he wasn't, he didn't lock with either of our het/poss het females this season...so no pieds this year :(.

Your collection is a great start! You'll have many choices as far as combos too.

Instead of buying another female or two consider a double co dom such as a lemon blast or a pastel yellow belly. that gives you the chance to produce better hatchlings.:)

I voted great because it's a Great start. I would love to have all those morphs for my first few! I'm surprised at the few I have myself, cause I don't make enough $ to be buying much...anyway, great start!

I voted good because it is hard to tell what the quality of animals you have without photos. You can make a lot of combos with what you have. You can also introduce multiple males to one female :) If it where me and I had the space I would get 1 -3 more normal females. If you get really nice females they can imporve the quality of your morphs. Good luck and make sure you have a good incubator. Nothing worse than getting a great clutch and loosing it to a poor incubator.
