    Super Pastel?
    Hey Everyone,

New to this site and the world of ball pythons. Was really into snakes in general when I was younger but my parents wouldn't let me bring one into the house.
Any way's I've been researching and am thinking of starting a small hobby business breeding ball's. I came accross an add on the internet for a Super Pastel for a good price.

From the research I've done this looks like a Super but I just wanted the opinions of some people on this site so any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry not sure how to post pic so here's a link :

    http://http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-ViewAdLargeImage?AdId=274643182&ImageIndex=2

    and

    http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-ViewAdLar...AdId=274643182

If for some reason the links don't work, let me know and I'll try to re-post.

    Thanks!

    Re: Super Pastel?
I would go and see it in person. The first pic looks like a nice pastel, but the second looks like a super. It seems to be browning out in the first pic, and that tells me it's not a super, or not a good one.

The second pic looks amazing. But, is too washed out from the flash to see for sure. Supers are defined by extreme head blushing, and not a lot of black. Like here:

    http://newenglandreptile.com/nerd/in...er-pastel.html

Notice the "white" blushing on their head, and how the black bands are "washed out"?

Maybe we can get some members to post their supers for comparison. Good luck & Welcome!

    Thanks for the confirmation,

He was asking for $500 for the complete setup which included a 30 gal tank, locking screen, multiple hides, heating mat, water dish, decorations etc, and a nice stand. I was probably going to sell off the tank once I get into the hobby a little more and get a rack setup.
I was going to offer him $400 and see what happened.

Sound like a decent deal to you?

I agree, the second picture looks more like a super pastel than the first. It's always better to see it in person. I've seen pastels a couple of months old that look like supers and super pastels that look like high quality pastels.

Here is a picture of my super pastel

    Hope this helps

I saw the ad and it's a good deal if it is indeed a super pastel. The set up looks well kept. Ask him where he bought it and if he has the receipt from the breeder stating he's a super.

Definetely helps! Thanks for the pics.

The one I'm looking at was born Fall 2009 currently is a reported 1030 grams and is male.

I think I'm going to have to go look at him in person because as you mentioned the pictures weren't the best.

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far !!! Having a resource like this is a BIG help for the noob :)

Just saw your last post rexrem,

I had asked him and that's the only thing that I'm slightly worried about is that he got it from a local pet shop (Big Al's), but I'm going to ask him if he has a receipt that says that it's a Super. From what I've read about the shop where he got it is a fairly reputable chain, who claim to use breeders, but a receipt would always be better than word of mouth.

It looks like a nice pastel but I'm not seeing super. The super that was posted is gorgeous and you can see that the black is almost bleached looking. On the picture I looked at on the ad theres too much black for him to be a super. Being from the fact that he was bought in a Petstore it's doubtful that he's a real super pastel and the seller may have been douped himself. Just my .02

I personally think it looks like a regular pastel. But I can't see it in person and the pictures aren't the greatest.
Maybe this will help a little....
So now you can see a picture of a super pastel posted and a pastel
Here's my pastel(his yellow doesn't show up well in this picture, but if you'd like, I can take some new pictures of him)...

Thanks a lot to everyone who responded, really appreciate it!

Turns out the guy selling him had no paperwork or receipt, and didn't seem too willing to let me see him unless I was going to buy him, so I think I'm going to pass on this one.

Seemed too good to be true and probably was!

Just wait for the 2011 hatchlings. You can get a female for that price.

Thanks for the picture, seeing the Super and the regular pastel I'm still not positive on what the one I was thinking of getting is, but I think I'll play it safe if he doesn't have any documentation. And as 'rexrem' said I can probably get a 2011 that's definetely a super for the same price.

    Thanks though!

Truthfully it could go either way to me. It might be a below average super, or an above average pastel.

If he has no paperwork, no receipt and won't even let you see the snake before you buy it, now that sounds shady.

If that were a regular pastel who held it's color like that at 1000+ grams, to many it would be worth the $400-500, even if it is male. If that is a super, it's not nearly as blushed out as most people like their supers, and would not be worth that price to most. So it could go either way. However, anyone who wants you to buy an animal or anything else sight unseen, that is a person to avoid dealing with.

Best to wait for a really nice hatchling from someone who'll let you see and hold the baby so you know what you are getting.

I posted pics of my pastels here. And looking at the ones you posted in the op, honestly, they look like regular pastels to me.

Would definitely ask if he has the receipt and paperwork on it.

That's really weird and suspicious that he wouldn't even let you see it.....
I would definitely avoid that person and his "deal"

100% agreed. Any good person would let you check out the snake, environment etc. And if you decided to buy it then or not that's your choice. I've never put an animal up for sale locally that people can't come look at prior to buying it. In fact I'd prefer it.

Ya I think I'm going to pass on this one.

Ah well, I think I'll stop looking in the online classifieds and go to a breeder. From what I've heard, that sounds like the best way to go.

Don't even have my first ball yet but already loving this hobby :)

    Thanks everyone!

I not trying to say anything negative about big breeders or anything.....but don't completely give up on the online classifieds and the little guys. The pastel I posted a picture of is an amazing eater, no health problems, perfect sheds, and around 1200 grams.....and I got it for only $50 from a very, very nice person I found on an online classified site

I saw a nice pastel, but not a super. Doesn't have a lot of blushing.

    Re: Super Pastel?
They look like really nice pastels but I can see how using a close up shot with a bright flash might make it seem like a super. I vote nice pastel.
