    Heartbroken
Well I came home from a 2 week trip to a clown with a severe RI. One vet visit and $400 later he passed away the following morning.

The bp rack lost power sometime while I was gone, and he managed to dump his entire water bowl out. cold + damp = sick bp. I'm so heartbroken, and I feel so terrible for not being there to help him. Thankfully all the others in the rack seem to be fine, but I so miss having a clown in there.

I'm seriously trying to decide between finding another clown or selling my remaining bps. He was definitely my favorite and my nicest, so I'm not sure what to do. If I can find another reduced pattern clown I might snatch it up, but right now I'm just a mess and I don't know what to do.

Sorry for the rant, but I just needed to tell someone who's not going to say "it was just a snake."

    thanks for listening. RIP Otto

    Jessica,

Back in October, I had my pride and joy, Loki (male Pewter) come down with a severe RI. And despite my best efforts, (multiple vet visits, and 3 antibiotics, along with a lot of stressing) he passed away. It was horrible. I loved that snake. I still get emotional thinking of him.

I too thought I should just give everything up. I actually sold about half of my collection because I was so devastated.

If you truely feel you have a passion with these guys, don't give up. I am glad I stopped when I did. I still regret selling a couple snakes.. But lesson learned.

I'm still not attached to any of my snakes like I was to Loki, but I know he's no longer suffering and I still have his sister (Athena) in my collection who will hopefully produce a Pewter holdback for me in the future.

I am so sorry for your loss. Hang in there.

I'm sorry for your loss. Nothing heals the heartbreak from a loss like a puppy (or in this case, a hatchling).

I am sorry to hear that. I wouldn't go swearing off of bp's just yet though. Death is part of a pet owners life. Although sometimes tragic it is inevitable. That doesn't mean we don't get another one and the new ones we get never replace the old. Don't loose hope. Good luck.

I'm so sorry to hear that :( It's always horrible to lose an animal, especially one that was close to you. He was a beautiful clown too :( I agree with the others though that you shouldn't give up. It wasn't your fault, there was no way you could have known, and I'm sure the rest of your bps have excellent homes with you. If they are your passion, then you shouldn't give them up. Hang in there (as hard as it is)

And it's not pathetic at all! My snakes are my babies, it's hard to even think about something happening to them, and I'm going to be a complete wreck when it does. So I completely sympathize!

Damn! Sorry to hear about your loss. You'll always have empathy on BP.net
It would eat me up too to come home and find my sick BP with a RI, and then to pass not much later.
You'll always have our hearts and eyes (normally would have put ears, but it's text ;) )

Aww, I am terribly sorry for your loss hon.

Please give yourself some time to grieve before you decide to sell off your other snakes. Right now it's kind of a knee-jerk reaction, and you'll regret your hasty decision later.

Grieve for a while, it's not only normal it's good for you. After few months, if you still find your heart isn't in it, then go ahead and get out of balls. But don't underestimate the power of your remaining snakes to help you heal.

When I lost my beloved cat whom I had for almost 24 years, I was devastated, but even though I didn't think I could ever love another cat, surprisingly enough a scruffy little stray who wandered into my life about then made loosing Tigger a little easier, and today I'm glad he did.

Please don't blame yourself for the accident, it could have happened to any of us. It's not the same as the people out there who deliberately neglect their snakes.

I wish you all the best.

That gave me the chills :tears: I'm so sorry for your loss, it's not just a snake. I'd be a mess if my first normal died. You get just as attached as you would any other pet.
I'd say, don't sell off your BPs.. what kind of life is a life with no Ball Pythons?? ;)

I am so sorry for your loss :( He was a beautiful boy and you did the best you could for him.

I lost a grouping of my young crested geckos I'd been raising up for months (this happend early last year) and I just recently lost my first gecko ever very suddenly. It hurts, still, thinking about them and wondering what I could have done differently to save them. It put me off reptiles a lot more than I thought anything ever could. I restructured my entire collection and debated getting out of geckos entirely, or never breeding (since it was all my babies, and the eggs that two of my females produced went bad). It was hard, and it took a long time to get over, but you will think about your baby and remember him the way he was, Happy and Healthy.

Sometimes we lose animals for no good reason, and it sucks. But look at the animals you have, and see your boy in them. Don't be afraid to debate restructuring (it really helped me to slim down a little and really focus on the animals that I love).

You loved him, and that is evident. He wasn't "just a snake" he was your snake, and he was your pet and you loved him. ..Brb gonna go cry now *tearsmile*. *hugs*

I am so sorry for your loss.

We have to realize when working with animals, some may get sick and possibly die. Accidents can happen and you can't beat yourself up over it. Learn from the experience and trust me you will become a better snake keeper and in the long run all your snakes will be better off.

I lost a prized animal many years ago(when they were real expensive) and it hurt bad but, it made me persistent to become a better snake keeper and make necessary adjustments to equipment and husbandry. Now I have a great system, top notch equipment and a very large, healthy, happy and growing collection.

My loss taught me to be a better keeper and yours can too, hang in there.:)

The loss of a loved pet does get easier over time, but it takes a LONG TIME.
Dont do anything you will regret out of hurt and anger, take some time and think about it.

It will get easier and we are here to listen when you need us:tombstone:tears:

Sucks, sorry to hear. There nothing wrong with being so attached to a snake. I still miss my Harley. He was my first snake and I had him near 10 years when he died a sudden death of unknown cause. I just found him dead. He was the reason for everything I am today. I am a breeder of snakes and I educate people and kids about reptiles. Don't give up such an amazing hobby, theres nothing else like it.

Im so sorry for your loss :(. It isnt pathetic at all to cry over a beloved pet. It is a totally normal reaction.

I don't think you should get rid of your other balls. They need you, and they have a great home with someone that cares so deeply for them.

Thanks so much for the support everyone! It really means a lot to me.

I'm not selling all of my bp's, I'm sure of that. But I do think I need to slim down my collection a bit so I can focus more on each snake so nothing like this happens again.
