    Boy do I feel silly....
I have researched and researched and have met some wonderful knowledgeable people and have learned so much regarding ball pythons and their care, etc...and I just found out they don't "hear" like we do...

So I talk to my snakes on a regular basis, and now it makes me sad that they can't even hear me lol. Just had to share that.

Oh I talk to mine all the time. I'm sure they can hear me and understand me. They seem to like my singing, too; and, really, that's the most important part of any relationship. Putting up with each other.

Unless I've unknowingly slipped another gear, snakes have all the bones needed to hear but lack an entrance for sound to work them.

They do feel the vibration of your voice though. I think they do, anyway.

Yeah I've read they "hear" just not like we do, it's more of a vibration thing...idk I liked to think they knew my voice, when I don't think they physically can lol

If it helps...... Talk to them all you want!

I believe mine hears me and I will not hear anything, that says ant different LOL

I might be weird, but I talk to all my animals!

I talk to all my animals, no matter if they are scaled, feathered, or furred. I know the snakes do not understand me though. I still talk to them anyway. Mostly it is things like "Oh my god! That dump is as big as you are!" or "Don't you dare bite me!" and things like "The rat! Not me!"

Snakes do hear, or so say the scientists.

I work from home and my snakes are in my office. When I'm working on something, I'll ask them questions and what they think. My frog is on my desk and I talk to him all the time. So don't feel silly! :P

I talk to mine all the time, and I've only had him a week. :) He seems to like it when I hum sometimes, he rests his head against my cheek when I do anyway, so I'm assuming he likes it. lol

I talk to all my animals. When I had guppies I talked to them too. I've also been known to have full conversations with myself ;)

    Talk away!

They can also see the warm air coming out of your mouth. :)

Hahaha! Don't you dare feel silly...I talk to mine all the time and I knew they couldn't hear me...I can't help it..heh. I do like to hold them up against my chest when I talk though so they can feel the vibrations :)

I've always sorta thought they "hear" similar to how sounds sound to us when we're under water, kind of muffled vibrations and tones. Like it was stated before, they do have the parts to construct an inner ear, it's just inside their head with no opening to the outside world haha.

Dr Del, I have always wondered, when you say the snake can see warmth, is it really them seeing it with their eyes or is it rather them using their jacobsons to feel/smell the temperatures? I've never gotten a straight answer on this

    Hi,

I wish I knew what it looked like to them. :)

But the jacobsons organ deals with taste/ smell iirc and the heatpits provide the temperature differences - how much of it is tied into a system like vision I can only wonder.

I saw a TV program once that said the positioning of the heatpits meant they could guide the strike while the mouth was wide open whereas the eyes might not be able to see the target at all. Mine just seem to flail around wildly with their open mouths if they miss so I'm not sure I really believe the show.

I always imagine it as similar to the overlays from the predator movies but I doubt we can ever know.

However their senses work it is certainly accurate enough to allow snakes with no vision at all to strike their prey though.

Well, this thread definitely makes me feel better. Sometimes I think I'm the only crazy one who talks to my snakes, so it's nice to know I'm not alone :P I think I've just gotten into the habit from talking to my cat, so even though I know they can't really "hear" me I do it anyway. I like the comments about feeling the vibrations and seeing your breath though, always re-assuring... and even though I know most snakes don't really care about human interaction, it seems like some of them at least don't mind the attention, and when you're talking to them it's kind of like focusing your attention on them. So I don't think there's anything silly about it at all :)

Hahaha that's exactly how I think of it too!! It would be interesting to know for sure what it's like.

I would feel silly if I didn't talk to my snake. It just comes naturally. I talk to all of my pets, and my plants too. It's just another way of communicating. I think they get the idea, whether or not it's "understandable" to them!:D

i talk to my mojo girl sometimes...
    for me it's
"dont even think about it!" when she's giving my hand the "stink-eye".
if she looks REALLY serious she get's a quick spritz from the water bottle but i'm a very bad aim so 9 x's outta 10 i'll end up hitting the bark in front of her which is enough to make her back off.

Ok...now my question is...I DJ at home a lot so would the vibrations from the music be too much for the BP if its in another room? I'm really not loud and neither is the house (especially since the wife is now ex-wife Yea me) except for when I'm watching a good movie or playing music. It may sound silly but if its going to make mine uneasy or annoy the crap out of him/her I'd like to know as it will help me with the location of the tank and I'll also know to be "considerate" when I play music or watch movies.

Forgive the "silly" question but I like to know as much as I can and research before I purchase my BP

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I play video games involving loud and frequent gunfire in the same room as my geckos, and they have "proper" ears, and it doesn't seem to bother them, so I wouldn't expect a snake to be bothered by music or movies, especially in a different room.

Don't feel silly, I think we all do it (whether we admit it or not.). I believe that, although our pets don't understand the words, they do understand or at least sense our intentions and emotional state...the tone of our voice also may also affect their reaction to us.
I'm convinced my dog understands everything I say ;-)

My dog DOES understand everything I say. My husband and I have to spell OUT because he hears the word and gets all excited wanting to go outside. It's not the tone of voice either. He picks it out in random conversation. Lol
