just got bac from the vet and guess wat !!!! :( and name ideas

:Dlet me just start explaining why im so upset. first i was a newb to the snake world and i bought my normal tyson at a pet store. was told he only ate frozen thawed that was a complete lie. i was told he was no older than 6-8 months but the vet says more like 1 1/2 - 2 years old, i was also told all kinds of things about caring for him that was so completly wrong. finally i was told he was a male so thats why i purchesed my female mystery morph (still havnt confirmed what she is yet)- ( i was wanted the female to maybe one day breed the two i had written a post on this). and the vet just told me my tyson my male normal bp is adang ol female. i can not stress enough how important it is to purchase from a good breeder. next thing they will tell me SHES not a bp SHES a bearded dragon lol. but anyways yes pet tores will tell you whatever you want to hear so beware they are complete liars:colbert:. but on a good note SHES healthy as can be. and i still love the hell outta her i dont really care about the breeding it was just a possibility that might have wanted to explore.

AND FINALLY!!!

since tyson is a she anybody got any good suggestions on a FEMALE name have fun ill post which name i picked tonight:gj:

she stuck like a plastic tooth pick looking thing inside her. then she said im about 99.9% sure hes a she but theres always a chance i could be wrong. lease dont tell me this is wrong cuz i paid the 60 bucks for the check up just so i could e sure of the sex

X 2 plus how did he determine that the animal was 1.5 to 2 years instead of 9 months :confused:

No clue how a vet could say your snake is older than you think it is... other than a baby vs. an adult. As far as probing goes.. it's not always right, you might STILL have a he. :D

At any rate, Tyson is a good girl name too.

Sounds like the vet probed it. I would also like to know how they determined how old it was too....

Heck, I'd be happy to find out he was a she xD male morphs tend to be a little cheaper ;)

yes probing thats wat she called it and how accurate is it how cn i tell for sure. and as far as age goesshe just said really its hard to tell but from her 30 years exp and based on feeding once every week she would be some where between the 1 1/2 - 2 yr old range. she said 9 months she had never seen a norm bp that long at 9 months. but it was just her opinion like i said. i do kno she wieghs 176 grams according to their scale

good point but ijust got a good deal on a something lesser something female for 200 bucks but its cool im just as happy with 2 females heck i love females lol:colbert:

176g? I have a 6 month old that weighs almost 500 and a late '10 on the way that is 120g. What are you feeding her weekly?

And I have NEVER seen a 176 grams year and a half BP. :rolleyes:

If a BP was fed weekly since that is what she base the age on there is just NO WAY the animal would be 176 grams.

What if I tell you have have the following (among others)

1500 grams female
1200 grams female
1395 grams female
750 grams female

there are 2 2009 , 1 2008 and 1 2007 can you tell me which one is which ;)

Bottom line you cannot guess the age of an animal based on weight or anything else.

So given she estimate a 176 grams BP at 2 years old I would get a second opinion on the sex and have the animal popped.

Doubt your vet have seen many BP period in the last 30 years. ;)

Just so you know my male 7 month old normal weighed 212 grams today.....so I'm pretty sure she's not 1 1/2 years old...the pastel I'm picking up was born in july 2010 and he's only about 300 grams...

176 grams for a 1.5-->2 year old? I am new to balls and I call BS to that. My gear is 6 months old and weighs a tad over 300 grams. My brothers is about 4 monts old and weighs in 190 grams.

Are you sure the vet doesnt work for the petshop?:P

a lot of pet stores feed very sparingly so the snakes stay small... they're easier to sell. I think if the snake was long and obviously thin then you could be sure she is older than 6 months... just saying, it's possible to tell a healthy well fed snake form a malnourished one

Totally agree, but it would be impossible to tell it was 1.5-2 years at that size

I highly doubt that snake is any older than 9 months. If it is, it was being starved..

Many stores do what we call maintenance feeding. This means just enough food to keep it alive. I bought a beautiful female BP from a kid who knew almost nothing about them. I figured she was about a year to a year and a half old. She was 600 grams. Less than one later she laid 6 eggs and had gotten up to 1600 grams before breeding. This leads me to believe she was older than I originally thought and had not been fed enough..

Yours being so small though... That's a different story. A 2 year old ball should be much bigger than that, even on a maintenance diet.

I had a similar story, I got my pastel from a guy on CL who had gotten him from a breeder in San Diego. Shortly after I got him, he started exhibiting signs of an RI so I researched reptile vets in Los Angeles and went to one in Studio City. The vet couldn't tell me exactly whether or not he did have an RI but the symptoms I was describing sounded like one so she gave me the antibiotic shots or whatever that I had to give him every 2 days (THAT was quite the experience LOL) I figured since I had gotten him on CL that I would double check the sex since the vet said she could probe him for $12 and she said she was 99% sure HE was actually a SHE. (I had this done in June '10 and the snake was born in 09).... so literally from June until now I am thinking I have a female .... well I recently learned how to pop and out come 2 hemipenes and sperm plugs. lol. SO MUCH FOR THAT!
The vet also told me that my snake could be allergic to the reptile specific aspen bedding I had him in.... (at the time I didn't know any better and believed her- i mean why wouldn't I she is a vet) .... lol I clearly know better now. But hey after the antibiotics the RI went away ... at least that's better haha. But when it comes to sexing, I like to actually SEE for myself.
