more snakes! special cleaner?

just wondering..i am getting two more balls..i currently use a 10% bleach /water solution to clean the tubs i will put them in.. is that enough? do i need all this special cleaner stuff i hear people talking about?

Different people will recommend different things..aka chlorohexidine, and such but I just use somewhere between 5-10% bleach solution (I never measure it exactly, I just make sure it's under 10%) and it works just fine for me. Just make sure you rinse very very thouroughly! The smell of bleach is bothersome for people, just imagine how bothersome it is for your snakes whose sense of smell is much more accute than ours...

The bleach solution is fine.

I don't do well around bleach so I don't use it due to my health issues with it. Chlorine is toxic and must be washed away completely. There are a grab bag or other products ranging from peroxides, iodine compounds, Quatemary ammonia compounds as well. All have pros and cons and non are miracle cleaners to work properly every trace of organic mess must be removed first, (no poo pee or substrate) and typically it takes 20 min for all of them to be effective. Chlorohexidine is a common one use as it is low toxic effects on herps and is unstable so it breaks down quickly. Unfortunately it breaks down quickly and must be mixed before use to have maximum effectiveness.

Steam also is an effective cleaner as well. I use a combination of steam, Chlorohexidine and an iodine product depending on the task.

I only use Healthy Habitat....it is all natural, no chemicals and breaks down poop like crazy. I buy it online at Reptile Basics.

I'd usually recommend using a product that can kill bacteria as well maybe not every time but for 'big' cleaning times. Healthy Habitat kills nothing it is just an enzyme. It works well on smells in plastic to be sure however!

I have used it as well but again just on smelly old tubs I bought. I cleaned them out so they were as clean as I could get them and then sprayed Healthy Habitat and let it sit until dry two treatments and the tubs that could be smelled all though the house don't seem to smell at all now. I have never used it as a cleaner however just on smelly stuff.

So it's more of a 'cleaner', rather than a 'disinfectant'.

I'd actually call it a deodorizer it is absolutely not a disinfectant at all the manufacture makes that quite clear.

They claim it as a cleaner, but at the price of it I'd just use hot water and elbow grease maybe some dish soap. Then a disinfectant and maybe after everything healthy habitat. Don't get me wrong it did a better job of removing smell from an old Rubbermaid tubs than anything else I tried (bleach,Lysol,CHG,D12 on and on) I was ready to toss them out and have custom ones built (old size rack) to fit. But someone here suggested healthy habitat and I sprayed them really heavily and let them dry and air out (on the deck!) for a few days re-washed them and repeated it and by the time I was finished there was next to no smell at all. Just a light pleasant clean smell. I just don't think of it as a cleaner.
