thermostat opinions?
i bought a rehostat for my heating pad and its still getting too hot. i want to get a good thermostat for a good price. i might be hooking a CHE up to it eventually as well. i dont want to spend more than maybe $70 but i also dont want to hurt my bp in any way. opinions and suggestions??

Re: thermostat opinions?
Here is a CHE and a Thermostat. It would be $56.93. Check out other websites for the same products. Or even a local petstore. Or you can get them from LLLreptile.

Look at a Herpstat. Its a proportional thermostat, abit expensive but worth every penny! You will never have to worry about temps again. I bought that zilla1000, hate it! Dont waste your money.

Re: thermostat opinions?
all i use is herpstat....they are the bomb....i've never used an on off thermostat but ive heard nothing but bad things...
-
the herpstat is a little more than i have to spend.
-
Re: thermostat opinions?
I use both types and they both work fine.
For your price range a johnson controls A419 is a good choice.
My favorite t-stat is a herpstat
Save your rheostat for the CHE you won't want it on the same controller as the UTH.

I have nothing but GOOD things to say about "on/off" t-stats. At least the Ranco one. (Johnson is the same difference). They work just fine. :D
In your price range I'd get a ranco or a johnson.

i was just looking at the johnson controls. my dad has a johnson t stat that he uses for a heating pad in a cooler. the probe for it is just the little metal one. i might give it a try for a day or so. it should work shouldnt it?

Heat mat thermostat
I got this temp control for less then $30.00 will take up to 1000 watts. Has a probe that can be place at the heat pad. Doesn't have that reptile sales pitch price tag but works just the same.
search
Hydrofarm Digital Thermostat For Heat Mats used for seeding plants.

i was actually just looking at that on ebay. how well does it work?

Re: thermostat opinions?
In that price range, Johnson's are good and so are the Ranco's. Hydrofarm make a on/off thermostat that is pretty good as well, and its like $25.74 with free shipping.
Here is a link to a post about the Hydrofam.

my dad has one thats called brewers edge 2 but the control is made by johnson. i just hooked it up and we shall see how she works. i have it set at 92 for the pad. does that sound about right??

Zoo Med
I use this zoo med reptitemp 500R with great success. It's a simple on/off model, but it keeps my temps fairly accurate. My ambient temps are pretty much always exactly the same, and it keeps my hot spot within 2 degrees. I guess it depends on how much you want to run or how big your set up is, but this works great in a glass 20 gallon tank with UTH.... and at less than $30, you can't go wrong.

im going to try this one of my dads and see how i like it and decide from there. im seriously considering the hydrofarm one.
-
The pad at 92 is fine perhaps a touch high depending on the accuracy or the probe but at least you aren't saying that 100ºF is ok anymore!
-
haha the t stat has a thermometer in it and its about 5 deg higher than the accurite thermometer i have in the tank. i dont know which one to believe lol
-
Not really that surprising, accurate temp one is 2 degrees up the other 2 degrees down and you have 5 degrees in the difference. Unfortunate, I'd actually try to split the difference. Ironically the cheap liquid crystal stick on ones are usually more accurate (+/- 0.5ºF) than both they are cheap, just don't stick it on ( it will not be a good representation of what the rest of the enclosure is) use it where the probe is and check the T-Stat against it.
-
yea im going for in the middle of both of them whick is between 88-90.

Re: thermostat opinions?
The thing I hate about my Herpstat Pro is that I never have to worry about what the temps are. The cool hide is 80º, the warm hide is 90º, and the ambient temp varies between 85º (day) and 75º (night.) It's really boring.
What's that worth to you?
-
well if i had that kind of money to spend on a t stat it would be the herpstat.

I like posts like this but in reality you can have the best T-stat in the world but the conditions your enclosure is surrounded by plays a large role. Even the enclosure itself plays a major role! Regardless if your ambient temps are fine and you just need something to control your temps i don't see why a 50 dollar ranco 30 dollar hydro farm wouldn't work well for you?
But when i build my rack and get a little more serious i would agree herpstat pro hands down. again runs 100 dollars +++

Isn't the welfare and life of your snake worth the price of quality equipment?
-
yes it 100% is but i dont have the money at the moment.
-
i think im going to try the hydrofarm. im only going to be using it for the pad and my ambient temps stay pretty solid.

Well obviously a person wouldn't put a snake tub/tank in a freezing cold room, hoping that just because you have a herpstat on it, all temps will be perfect. I have 2 herpstats, 1 on a rack system and the other on a PVC tank with plexiglass front window. They are both totally different setups altogether, yet after you get them dialed in, you can guarantee your temps will stay within 1-2 degrees at all times.
Like I was saying earlier, I had a Zilla1000 tstat running my tubs, which are exact same setups, in a heated room on a thermostat, and temps bounced around all day, sometimes getting just under 100f.
