    Hatchling with Enlarged Eyes...UPDATE
Thought I'd post an update on this little guy, whom we affectionately named Bug.

    His story:
    http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...larged-Eyes...

He is doing well and is just the nicest little BP ever even with all he's been through. He's around 70g now and still requires assist feedings but as soon as the pinky is in his mouth he coils it up :gj:. Hopefully he'll take the next step soon (striking it). His left eye is just a shed away from being normal. His right eye still collects fluid.

    So here he is...

Thanks! I hope he does too but the verdict is still out on whether or not there are any underlying problems.

I had a crested gecko once that had a condition like that and it did its whole life. He lived for about 5 years, was smaller then a normal sized crested but was fine with eating and shedding. Hopefully your guy will be just fine.

What a total cutie!! (I saw your previous thread and he looked SO cute as a hatchling, even with the enlarged eyes)

Here's hoping he keeps on being such a survivor!

    Re: Hatchling with Enlarged Eyes...UPDATE
I'm sorry to update this thread with bad news. I was so exited for this guy to continue to improve but sadly he didn't. After the pictures I posted earlier in this thread were taken both his eyes slowly filled up again. I drained them a few more times but his eyes just kept getting worse. I continued to assist feed him. He was at the point where I needed to soak him every time it looked like he needed to defecate and he would always have urates that would block him up. Also, he had a lot of underlying issues besides his eyes. Like mentioned above, he wouldn't defecate regularly on his own. The lower half of his body was constantly distended with built up fluids which leads me to believe his renal system wasn't working properly and filtering out fluids like it should. We finally decided to euthanize him. On his last day his whole body was puffed up with fluids and his head was twice the size because of fluid retention. I apologize for not taking any pictures (which would be useful to anyone else with a BP with this issue) because I was pretty upset.

After all was said and done we'll miss the little guy. He was very curious and often would come out of his tub to see what was going on.

Hopefully if anyone else experiences an underdeveloped hatchling they will still give them a fighting chance to grow up and become a great pet.

    I am so sorry.

This must have been very difficult for you.

I had high hopes this little one would pull through for you. I am glad you had the strength to do the right thing and end his suffering.

Thanks for the update Jessica, and the story. I hatched one just like that this year. He is now about 8 months old now, and still eating and pooping. His eye swelling has never completely gone away, but it gets smaller and larger on it's own. It does appear to be at it's smallest point right after a shed. I will have to put up a picture of him (Poss Het Lavender Albino) and keep it updated with his progress, since it seems that everyone else with this issue, never has the luck of the animal living.

Just wanted to say this was a great thread, and I was able to learn something from it.

    Thanks again,

Sorry, this thread got kind of confusing. Muddoc's little guy is still doing well, our little one, Bug, had to be euthanized. :(.

Is it a result of line breeding too much? I don't know about bp's but I have read that it is a common deformity from to much line breeding in many kinds of snakes. Or am I misinformed?

    Re: Hatchling with Enlarged Eyes...UPDATE
I honestly don't think this had to do with genetics. The parents are unrelated as far as I know. Basically his umbilical cord was wrapped around his yolk sack which most likely caused a disruption in his flow of nutrients and in turn caused him to be under developed. His eyes were just one symptom. I don't think it was an incubation issue either because all his clutch mates were perfect and did great. Also, we had another clutch in the incubator at the same time which hatched out perfect as well.

Here is a picture of his yolk left behind in the egg.

ok so i found this thread and thought nothing of it other than a weird deformity that must not be common as ive never seen it before but then i went to play with one of my females and oddly she has large eyes that stick out far too lol ive always thought her head was just small but no her eyes are huge
