Snake Owners homework Assignment
Hello all im writing a paper for my english class and the assignment is: Using vivid description, write an organized essay that describes the distinguishing characteristics of a member of a distinct social group.
i will be writing about people who own snakes as pets and i will be stating how despite the general view on snake owners being crazy for owning snakes or mentally different, snake owners are just everyday ppl and u might very well work with some and not even know it.
i just wanted to get some ideas for brainstorming on how i can do this paper thanks yall

reptile owners are also the most likely to earn 6 figure income ;) im sure you can google to find a decent source to cite

I'm not sure you're going to prove this. We "snake people" tend to be different. We are somewhat obsessive. Sure, the casual snake owner is not, but how many casual snake owners do you know? How many of us have gone from never owning a snake to havinge a complete "snake room" within a year or two?
Most of use are useful within our society, but we are not like the "average" person.
Good Luck!

Re: Snake Owners homework Assignment
well im really just tryin to disprove the common stereotype really when ppl first find out that i own snakes they think ur insane for keeping those things and i need to grow up stop and that im cruel for feeding my animals other animals.
when really us snake owners are very sane and some of us are super intelligent(Kevin at NERD) and we are very grown up just enjoy the company of a different kind of pet than normal. and we are no cruel at all if they think eating to live is cruel then become a veggeterian (no offense to any veggeterians out there) but seriously we feed our snakes mice they feed their cats tuna wats the difference between feeding F/T,or live and meanwhile the tuna is caught, cut up, tossed in a processor, and shoved in a can.
sorry kinda went on a little rant my bad hahaha

I'd be willing to say that people who have snakes usually have a better understanding of pet care (USUALLY! Not always of course) just due to the fact that most reptiles have different requirements and needs to stay healthy and living for their lifespans. I suppose it's a better statement for people who have collections, but as far as I can tell that's most of the people who we meet on here ;)

Re: Snake Owners homework Assignment
I think people see Snake Owners as "odd" because they think "Who would want a snake?" because when they hear the word "snake" they think an aggressive thing that bites and crawls like a giant worm and people think they are slimy and gross. When in fact most "pet" snakes are nice and rarely ever bite and are the opposite of gross, and they are probably softer then the person thinking they are slimy. People that stereotype snake owners are just ignorant and have no clue. Iv personally never actually been judged for owning a snake but people shouldn't be judging. All it is, is just another pet.
Good luck with the assignment!

i know i have been judged for owning snakes in the past but i have just kinda blown people off for the judgement,...

I don't know if you have it or have time to rush order it, but Herpers The Movie would be a very good source for this. You might also see if any breeders would be willing to let you interview them as they will know a lot of snake owners such as their regular customers.

Re: Snake Owners homework Assignment
I had a pretty awesome source that I used for an essay about a month ago, I'll see if I can dig it up for you. It describes how people who own snakes value them not because the snake worships them as a dog would, but simply because the snake could get on without them. It was really awesome, and it mirrors my thoughts on it. Who are we to judge the quality of an animal by whether it worships us or not?

Jim! obsessive! that is so very very true! I personally am about as obsessive as I can get. I love the details, how to heat the enclosure the most efficient way to maintain a little slice of Africa in my room, that is likely why I don't love my rack it is only the barest minute slice.
OP: Back to your problem, why not interview someone whom keeps snakes in your area a breeder or avid enthusiast? If you can not find someone why don't you ask someone here for a phone interview. You will have interview notes and then write you paper. You can look up some facts and figures on what is relevant to the interview and that gives you written references as well. The important part is it goes that one step farther than you prof is likely to expect. I teach in a university and have always been impressed when one of my students goes that one extra step.

that sounds like it'll be an interesting paper. good luck. :gj:

That will be interesting. If you are in college you will need real data to back it up, but if you are in high school, I believe that it would be acceptable to have us fill out a survey of questions you are looking for. First things that come to mind: education, job, criminal history (yes no question-may need to be PMed or it may be left unanswered, missing data isn't detrimental to research as long as it's not your main focus), age, marital status, and anything else you can think of that would paint a picture of people that own snakes. I did a pole on people's education a long time ago and I was amazed of all the educated people on this site (BA+). Snake people aren't a bunch of dumb dropouts, there are some highly educated respectable snake people. One of my very close friends, has a Ph D in mathematics and breeds some exceptional snakes!

Re: Snake Owners homework Assignment
I am a snake owner...and I understand what you mean about the stereotypes. Just because some people don't see the beauty in these creatures like we do...doesn't mean we're weird. haha I will admit that I am different than most people and I've just always been fascinated with snakes. Everyone likes different things. It sucks but the stereotypes will never go away because so many people are fearful of them.
