You need a lot more airflow. You need to cut out a big square hole on each side of the tub and cover it with quarter inch square metal screen.

When you say holes, do you mean you just poked holes in the plastic lid? If so, that is not near enough ventilation and you will get a lot of moisture buildup, and ammonia buildup. This can cause serious health problems for your rodents if left the way it is. I suggest cutting a large area of the lid out (ideally use the side of the tub) and put in some wire mesh (1/4-1/2")

in this sticky. it shows you an option for securing the hardware cloth. appears to be cable ties. i would just make sure to check them every now and then to make sure they aren't being chewed on.

If you use thin wire you can tie the mesh on. (TIP!!!) use the thin wire that they have wrapped around the wire mesh to keep it rolled up ;)

If you cut out the top of the tub like these are then you won't have to worry about them chewing on plastic ties if you so choose to use those. I have feeder tubes going down into the tub from the middle of the mesh so they can climb on it so i used metal to tie everything. I have yet to have had a chew out!!

One big big mistake I see with what you did is that you have the wire mesh on the outside. They can chew the tub on the inside that way and chew right around the mesh and escape. Which is why you should put the mesh on the inside.

I use hot glue. Just use a crapload of it and you MIGHT have to do maintainance every month or few. Depends on how bad your rats chew, and if you have big chewers, either you need to teach them not to do that or cull them.

Oh, and it doesn't really matter if it's inside or out with BAD chewers. I had some stupidass rats that would chew on the actual wire. Needless to say, I killed them right away. You hear that noise throughout the house. THE. WHOLE. HOUSE.
