Have you ever been called a "devil worshiper"?
I met a lady and I happened to mentiont that I kept snakes. She sorta looked at me strange and then proceeded to call me a "devil worshiper" and If I get bit by "one of satans creations" I will be possesed and die.

I laughed so hard it wasn't even funny. She looked very puzzled after I stopped. I didn't say anything back to her and proceeded to walk away. Still laughing my A$$ off in my head.

    lol. the nerve....

I haven't been called a devil worshiper, but I have heard my fair share of comments towards my growing collection and love for animals. Some people just don't get it.

Wow.. Just, wow, lol.. That's definitley a new one! I mean, being a person of faith I know that satan was in the form of a serpent when he met Adam and Eve in the garden, but ummm thinking someone is a devil worshipper just because they have snakes is a tad extreme..

Does she not realize that technically God made snakes too? Otherwise why the heck would they have been in Eden. I'm sure that question would have dumbfounded her.

An Article that came up on google - Snakes and Religion

"The mysterious and ambivalent nature of snakes has led to conflicting assessments of them. On the one hand, they represent death and evil, while on the other, serpents are believed to embody the divine and the good. In some religions, they can be both worshipped and accursed. For example, in the Bible the snake is a symbol of evil (Gn 3) and of life (Nm 21: 6-8). They play a major role in the beliefs of people because of their shape and their relation to their surroundings."

Re: Have you ever been called a "devil worshiper"?
i was called a devil worshipper a few times back when i was into "the look". that was back when i abandoned faith alltogether in a "why was my life so bad?!" fit. trust me i've since grown up and have returned to the church-going life...and fortunately no one here has insinuated at me being a devil worshipper. i've only told a couple people about my snake and for the most part that's info i tend to keep to myself cuz i know, and respect, that they're not really fond of snakes. my parents are planning to be here for the birth of the baby i'm currently carrying and i worry about how i'm gonna "hide" my snake when they're around. my dad's thing is "a good snake is a dead one" and my mom, well she's an extremely devout catholic, lets leave it at that.

Ahahaha! I've not been called a "devil worshipper" per say, but many people have made comments like "But how can you live with those evil animals? Don't they try to kill you or something?".

It's even funnier because the priest at my church knows that I keep snakes and he thinks they're cool XD

Have not been called that yet. I just recently got my first BP by way of a rescue. I had snakes back when I was a kid but that was a long time ago. The wife was like we are not having any snakes in this house. I told her it was a rescue just like a dog or cat etc. That changed her mind and now she just loves the new addition to the family.

Well in a nut shell I don't believe because to me the bible has 2 parts, the old testament in general explains how the world works (compare it to roman and greek god stories) then the new testament which teaches us how to live our lives. Nigher of which says anything other than "its a book" I'm not going to pick up a starwars book and believe it also. even if the starwars book was 2000 years old

point being, i don't care who belongs to what group, my beliefs are my beliefs because they make sense to me, i think i stand pretty logical :) I find the craziest ones are the ones that don't know anything about their own religion, just blind faith. Their just like HSUS supporters to me lol. wow im getting off topic

now were not in the quarantine forum so if you feel I crossed the line, pm me and let me have it. or continue this in that subforum

:O WHAT... OMG...that is too funny. I have quite a few Christian friends and I myself am Catholic. I have NEVER EVER had anyone say anything even remotely like that to me. Even with my friends that are over the top Christian dont even have those thoughts...:colbert:

I did have a native american mother refuse to let her child come to one of my shows as it was their belief if anyone saw a snake they would become gravely ill. Wierdest thing I have ever heard, but I have to respect her beliefs, and that is what I told her. So that her daughter did not feel left out we made arrangements for a private showing of lizards only!

Yeah...I know the creation-story is the reference most people are using when they get into the "snakes are the devil" sort of talk. My point was that nowhere in the Bible does it say that interacting with a snake makes you a "devil worshipper" and nowhere in the Bible does it remotely imply that if you get bit by a snake you'll suddenly be possessed by the devil. So her interpretation of the relationship between snakes and the devil and us is not "literal" in any sense of the word...it's totally fictional bunk. :)

I guess i should clarify, I was saying it more literal that serpents are evil, not necessarily devil worshiper . i mean the serpent is was made adam take the bite, so they are evil. but I agree with you.

also when I asked "do you happen to know more about stories with god using the serpent in that manor?" i was refering to snakes being used for signs of healing, after rereading it I realize I was not very clear about what I was referencing.

My view on that is that the snake had nothing to do with them eating the apple. It was merely a suggestion, and they lacked the willpower. In that sense, it had nothing to do with the snake, and all it meant was that there are things that will tempt us, we must handle them properly.

I'm a big supporter of the saying that "God wants spiritual fruits, not religious nuts" so even I, as a Christian, have my mini-issues with some other Christians. While I may not agree with your stance as being an athiest, it doesn't mean I don't respect your choice in beliefs. I'm not one to shove my beliefs down anyone's throats, but rather show how I believe through my actions. If that makes a difference in someone's life, then that's wonderful. If I have to tell someone I'm a Christian, and they can't see it in how I talk, act, and treat others, then I feel I need to re-evaluate who I am and where I'm at spiritually. One of my really, really good friends is an athiest and she and I have never had an issue being friends because of it.

I also think that before you can start looking at other people's beliefs, or lack of them, you must know your's. I'll be the first to admit that there is a lot more about my religion that I must know. That's one thing I can definitley say I have noticed- often times an athiest knows just as much or more about the Christian faith as a Christian.

As for the blind faith situation, I think there's a fine line between having a lot of faith and having a lack of knowledge of what you believe. Faith is the cornerstone of Christianity, because I cannot scientifically prove to you that Jesus was the Son of God. However, it doesn't mean that I can rely solely on my faith. I still have to constantly learn about my religion. But, I learn it with faith since it can't be proven. I know that's something hard for those who don't believe to understand or believe, but it's enough for me. I'm only 21 and while I've been in church my entire life for the most part, there is so much more that I have to learn.

And yeah, we've definitley strayed totally off-topic, and I hope I haven't offended anyone either.

I've never been called a "devil worshiper" but have heard my fair share of "any good snake is a dead snake." To be honest though, I'd rather be called a devil worshiper than hear the good snake = dead snake comments. I'd rather be called something benign than have someone insinuate they don't care to kill an animal {or see it being killed}.

Yes, been called a devil worshipper, accused of keeping evil animals, said that they would attract Satan's notice, proved that I was a person without faith.. gee.. I can't remember all the various comments.

During my religious schooling I was told repeatedly by MOST of the teachers and preachers and pastors that snakes were from Satan, evil and a symbol of evil. I had a lot of discussions with various folks and it ended up boiling down to me presenting several arguments showing that snakes were merely animals and Satan did the tricking of Mankind, while they said "Nope, snakes are evil, no I can't produce anything in writing but I know it's true." At that point I just gave up and said "Well, you're a idiot." If you want to claim snakes are evil, show me where God declared "Thou shalt not touch serpentkind, lest your hands become slimy and evil".

But people are going to hate what they want to hate, if they weren't using religion as the excuse as to why they hate snakes, it would be because all snakes are "poisonous" or "bite people" or they make people ill by breathing on them while they sleep.. or they're just "icky".

I'm a dog trainer at a large pet store and when I get the comments "YOU own snakes....(gasp)????, the people are usually terrified of snakes. Many times they start getting curious and asking questions.
I guess they realize that a 110 lb woman (me) didn't get swallowed in her sleep, that maybe they aren't really as evil as they thought, and they're not all out to get you.

I only get called a devil worshiper when I wear my goat's skull helmet, kneeling in the middle of an upturned pentagram painted with blood, candles at all 5 points, sacrificing a rooster hatched on a full moon by decapitating it with an obsidian dagger.

So just about every wednesday night or so :P

Okay in ancient times there was plenty of serpent cults, where serpents where seen as divinity or as gods. Also see the gilgamesh where the serpent is at the end of the story, mind you this is the oldest story in the world. I find a lot of religions beautiful. Islam,Hinduism, etc etc there is beauty is strange places like snakes,or religion. Modern Christians have lost there common sense or some of them have ,sad to say,but snake handlers are kinda cool, holding venomous snakes.

    Sooooo,

    If snakes are evil representations of the devil and owning them makes you a devil worshiper;
What does owning a cat, a historically known consort of witches and famed for stealing the breath of infants while they sleep make you ?

    It's a good thing idiocy isn't contagious.

Shame on all y'all. Don't you remember the good snakes in the Bible? Moses' staff was turned into a snake that ate the evil snakes. That is only one example. Snakes are God's creatures too.

If anyone wants to debate the issue with me I start the conversation by showing them my work in progress:

My only comment is that there are people out there who LITERALLY believe that this planet is between 4,000 and 6,000 years old...based on chronology gleaned from the bible....*sigh*....
I am a scientist thru and thru...give me physical, testable proof and I'll believe.

They've been calling me a devil worshipper since long before I started keeping snakes. I'm pagan. :D (And NO, we don't even believe in this "devil" we're accused of worshipping by the ignorant ...)

I get really offended when people say and do stupid stuff like that...I'm a christian with a strong faith also and I feel that there are a lot of "religious" people out there that make us look nuts. yes, I believe in God. yes, I love snakes. My mom tells stories about always finding ones that I brought in the house as a kid. I personally believe they are a part of God's creation...and I find pretty much everything about nature fascinating. Ok, I'm done :)
