Just out of Curiosity (mainly for women)
Just out of Curiosity how many women actually have snakes and actually take care of them, breed them, etc. You always go on these sites or other sites thinking not to many women are going to be doing this hobby/business but the more im on the more I notice there is quite alot of females interested in this hobby/business which is great because the more the better but I was just wondering how many took it seriously.

I keep an assortment of reptiles. I am the sole maintainer of my animals and I also got into the hobby on my own. :)

Despite the stereotype, women make up a pretty large percentage of this hobby!

My boyfriend is really into them too and we live together, but I do most of the cage clean up, feeding, ect. He helps out a lot though, which I really appreciate, as we have so many to care for.

My girlfriend does. None of her animals are up to breeding size, but after seeing how much fun this hobby is, she made the decision to start off with rainbow boas and panther chameleons :D It's been awesome, I've helped her out with reptile care and she's helped me out with tropical plant care. Together we've put together some awesome planted vivariums.

As far as women in the hobby goes, I see plenty of women both attending and vending at reptile shows.

If you look at species such as geckos and tortoises, you'll find that it's quite likely that women in fact OUTNUMBER men when it comes to keeping/breeding.

Just got into owning snakes and I'm ADDICTED. My goal is to hopefully start breeding within the next two years or so. Even my boyfriend is excited; he plans to build all the shelving units and such! :D

The boyfriend and I got into balls 3 or 4 years ago and it's been a growing obsession :)
We're down to 1 Kenyan Sand boa, 1 RTB and 7 BP's. Last summer we where almost at 30 BP's but have since given babies away or traded.

Thus far I just own and care for them, but am going to get into breeding probably in a season or two :D

If it weren't for living at home with the parents I'd have A LOT more reptiles than I do currently.

I keep snakes, geckos, monitors and tegus.

My boss, two co-workers(over at the vet, technically not co-workers.. but I digress).. my former assistant, and 3 friends I can think of with my sleep-deprived brain right now.. all females that I know keep snakes. Another vet worker owns geckos, but not snakes.

So me and another 7 other females all own snakes(at least).

Ditto that, although I don't do it all by myself...thankfully my other half is as into snakes as I am. We combined collections (kind of happens when you live together) and enjoy caring for our snakes (and rodents) together, planning our projects, setting up at shows, etc. SO much fun!

    Ooooh, count me in.
I just have 2 snakes as pets, but eventually I would like to get back into breeding.
Most people do not understand how I love to be surrounded by my snakes. Watching them move around relaxes me like some people watch fish.

Re: Just out of Curiosity (mainly for women)
I take it very seriously. I currently own 10 BP's and am trying my hand at breeding for the first time this season (have my fingers crossed with my male bee and female pastel. I've seen some good locks!). My husband used to HATE snakes. I'm talking he wouldn't even come within 5 feet of me if I was holding one, but he is up to tolerating them now. Sometimes he will even hold them while I am cleaning their tubs, so needless to say, I do all of the care for them. I am completely obsessed and would love to one day be able to take my hobby to the next level. It would be a dream come true to be able to do this for a living.

As for the stereotype of this being uncommon for women to do this sort of thing, I think that's just ridiculous. I would say at least 50% of the people in this business and on this forum are women. I've dealt with my fair share of stereotyping and sexism growing up as a gear head and always working on cars, so maybe I am a little over sensitive on this topic, but power to the women out there who say "Anything you can do, I can do better!" :D

Haha, oh man, I'm definitely into it :D And I gotta say, I know many more males who are afraid of snakes than females ;) Been crazy about reptiles since I could run around outside fast enough to catch them

Just my mojave and pastel as far as ball pythons go, I'll try my hand at breeding once they're big enough, and we'll see if college leaves enough for some expansion. On the side of the BP stuff I've got geckos, fish, frogs, and hopefully a boa soon

:D Ah, but remember...we're not all supermodels. :D

I be in this group as well. :) Always loved reptiles, thrilled when I could finally own some, and do intend to breed (once money and space are no longer an issue). I do 98% of the care and my BF/partner does the rest since one of the corn snakes is his. He's really gotten more and more attached to snakes since we got together. Which, by the way, has been 10 years as of the 17th.:fest2:

As for pictures...well, I'll just have to get some. Most of our pictures of the critters are of just my hand holding them, or of Ari holding them for me. :)

    +1 :D

I got my husband into snakes back when we started dating (he liked them but was scared :)). We grew our collection of various snakes and lizards together. I really got into breeding leopard geckos and that was kind of my own project. Now we breed Ball Pythons and shared the responsibility. I have been in charge of things lately due to his work schedule though.

I've meet a lot of women and girls that love reptiles. I would venture to guess around 45% of keepers and enthusiasts are women, maybe more :D.

I loved them! Once you have your set up right they are a piece of cake :gj:. I fed the little guys small crickets dusted with a good calcium vitamin (I think it was Sticky Tongue Farms) every other day and my breeders ate mealworms from a shallow bowl. Also, gave them a small dish of calcium power. They bred on their own basically. I would just provide a lay box for the moms and remove and incubate the eggs. All in all they were a bit more responsibility than a snake but not bad. In the past I used glass tanks but after reading up on them (I've been thinking of getting a few again :P), they can be housed in racks cutting down on some work.

I have to admit though it took a while before I was comfortable grabbing live crickets, I was not happy about it but working at a pet store I got over it. And wax worms...:puke:, they remind me of huge maggots. That took years before I would just pick them up out of the container. I was fine with my Rose Haired Tarantula but put a wax worm by me and I'd cringe.:rofl:

Sad to say but we don't have any lizards now only Balls and two Green Tree Python neonates. We've kept Leopard Geckos, Beardies, a Vield Chameleon, Skunk Geckos, a Frog-eyed Gecko, Crested Geckos, a Savannah Monitor, Green Iguanas, a Rose Haired Tarantula, Berms, Red Tailed Boas, a Jungle Carpet Python, a Blood Python, a few newts and a Whites Tree Frog. I really enjoy all creatures.

Boas are great too! The worst bite I received was from one of our boas though :(. She wasn't very calm like our first boa who was just awesome. And I know what you mean about the baby BPs, most go through a nippy phase until they realize people won't eat them.
