    Red underside
Hi everyone, I need help with something.

When I picked up my ball python today to hold him, I noticed there is a slight red/orangeish tinge along most of his underside. It's not very severe at all; I barely noticed it. I've already heard about scale rot, but I am unsure.

Hmm I've never noticed a tinge on his underside before he sheds, although I've never looked either :P This makes sense as he is late for his annual shedding.

    Thank you!

Just about to go into shed.

I give you props tho! Some people think their questions are dumb ( i know i did when i first started, i still think some of my questions are dumb :P) Due to this people don't ask the questions they have. Which can cause an unnecessary vet visit or a problem that could have been easily prevented.

Haha thanks, I'll admit, I'm kind of paranoid when it comes to making sure my snake is healthy and safe :P. Also, how often do you need to replace the bedding of a bp's cage? I always remove his waste after he does his business.

Depends on how big of a movement he had. For my balls i use paper towels so each time thye go its a full clean everytime.

If using aspen or sani chips daily spot cleans with a bi weekly swap

So you replace all of the bedding every two weeks? I know he does not urinate in a liquid form so I always just pick up his waste and sometimes sprinkle a little bedding over where he did it.

    Aren't we all?

What are you using for substrate? I use newspaper... 1. It's free! 2. Works just as well as anything else out there. 3. Easy to clean, just swap the old newspaper when your snake makes a mess with a whole new set of newspaper.

Well I've had him for a couple months and I've never actually replaced his bedding. I layed newspaper all over the bottom, then covered it with about 3/4 of an inch of aspen snake bedding.

P.s., I always remove his waste from the cage :P

But their waste has no liquid so I just remove the waste. And I use aspen snake bedding so how often should I replace it all?

They do have some liquid pee. I would replace at least monthly, when I used aspen I replaced and cleaned every two weeks, or when I saw waste.

redness on the belly can be a sign of septicemia aswell.

UPDATE:: His skin has faded from a red to a more of a pinkish color. I think you are all right about him going into shed because bits of dead skin are now starting to peel off. Here are some pics: http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/a...ation201-1.jpg

You can see the redness better on his lower half on this picture.

Also there is some tiny scabbing going on..

Scabbing going on on his belly?!
This could be a problem, not just a shed.

This happened to my female pastel. I thought thought there was something wrong, so I waited till she shed to see what was going on. After she shed, she looked just fine. In fact the "scabbing" look a lot worse on my female, than it does in your pics. So my advice would be to just wait until she sheds out.

You can see in the pictures, the scabbing is in teeny tiny specks where it is. Doesn't concern me much at the moment.

Thanks, I think he's just going into shed also. Hey, does your snake's scales become more loose before it sheds? I can flip his scales up alot more easily than normal right now.. I hope it's just a side effect of him going into shed.

Yes my snake's scales do tend yo feel a little "loose," but i wldnt worry about, its normal. If i cld suggest anything, maybe judt check the humidity, but think all is well.
