To bee or not to bee?

Hi Forum,

Im thinking of buying this little fellow, his an 2010 male but one of the last of the clutch. So im thinking he might be the ugly duckling of the group:(. I do not have much experience with bumblebees. I knowe they brown out quite a bit when they grow, this guy seems to have a fair bit of brown for a little guy?

If some of you could give some advice on what makes a great bee, and maybe some opinions on this one that would be great.

In the future i will want to pair him up with a little lady so really i am looking for one of good quality, so i would be happy to wait until later on in the year .

Your thoughts are probably right, but if you don't mind him being a bit dirty, he's perfectly fine. Some people prefer dirty bees, some prefer clean. I don't think he is too bad. I've definitely seen a lot worse!

Looks pretty good from where here. I was looking into buying one of these before I got Herbert. Yours doesn't seem to have too much brown. How much brown do they usually get with age?

Love it!!! You would be crazy to pass him up

As i said im no expert with bees, but i saw one in particular on jkbolka reptiles youtube channel that was crazy brown, didnt much look like a bee anymore.


What im trying to find out from this post is, does he have alot of brown for a youngen. And therefore will he brown out alot as he grows.

I am a fan of yellow snakes so i would prefer to keep him that way as long as possible.

Looks pretty nice to me. I like his high white sides! IMO the pic looks kind of dark, so it's hard to gauge the snakes true color. Maybe ask for another pic?

Yes, a good idea for sure. The pics are slighty dark, i will post if he can provide another photo.

He doesn't look like he'll fade too bad, ask for pics of the parents too :)

I dont think he'll brown out badly in time. I love his patterns, specially on his head. Ask pictures of the parents, at least it will give you an idea on how the parents turned out to be as adults. I love bees when they become adults, having 3 layers of color tones, golden brown on top, yellow in the middle, then white at the bottom. So I say, to bee! :)

I have made up my mind when I buy a bee it will already be a minimum of 4-6 months old.

I've seen lots of bees, and while most do turn three colors; brown/tan, yellow, and white, I've seen at least 6 that were solidly yellow and white. Their backs did not brown at all. THAT is the kind I want, but since I can't tell a baby that will brown from one that won't, I resolved to save my pennies and buy one that stayed yellow, I think I'll be well repayed by stellar babies down the road.

Thanks for all your input so far, i have taken on board some of your opinions and suggestions so thanks to all. I am still making up my mind on him.

I hope to get some pictures of mum and dad, when i do i will post them up.

The breeder has also given me some additional info on the clutch, this little guy as a minimal spider wobble but is apparently a little aggresive so may explain why he has been left behind. In a way that makes me a little more attracted to buying him:rolleye2:

I don't see much wrong with that bee; though I prefer my bees with fewer spots on them. Looks more like a true spider that way.
I have a bee with lots of spots; some with very few and I hatched out a female with only 3 little spots. She's super clean and holding her color well. She's going to give me some stellar offspring down the road...

This is the mother i believe. She seems very dark, but not as dark as some i have seen.
