    Hello from Texas
I am just getting into these wonderful creatures, thanks to a friend. I am looking to get my first BP as soon as I can. I am wanting to get everything I need set up before even going to look for one. I have a 10 gal tank I planned don using (for now) and just wondering what all I would need. Any and all info is appreciated. If there is anyone that wants to chat hit me up...I am out in West TX...

    Hello, and :welcome: to BP.net...

Here are the links to a couple of threads to get you started. One is a basic tank set-up and has a shopping list. The other is a caresheet with a ton of info. There are almost always different options when setting up enclosures. It can be as basic or fancy as you want to make it. The 2 most important things you will need to start with is an appropriately sized Under Tank Heater and a reliable thermostat to control it. The heat pad should cover at least 1/3 of you tanks floor space, but not more than half. There are a ton of threads covering just about everything from feeding to thermal burns. If you have any questions, just ask. If you find a topic that you want to research a little more, just type it in the forum "search" function at the top of the page, and it will give you plenty of threads to read through. And if you need them, we can post up links to websites where you can get just about anything you want...

Thanks everyone, I have been looking over the forums, and found a lot of useful stuff. Any recommendations on heat pads, substrate, hides, thermometer brand, etc?? I have kind of a tight budget, but don't want to go with the cheapest stuff. Links to places with stuff available would be cool, but would also love to see what others on here use....thanks again

as far as my budget goes, it is only gonna be tight for a month or so...thought I would get everything gathered up and the tank situated and then that next payday its shopping time haha....just trying to figure out if there is any brand of stuff not to use. i am planning on going with the coconut husk substrate. Anyone use that? if so how good is it? thanks

Holds in humidity great, sometimes too good LOL
I mix aspen and coco for a good look and humidity control.

Hello fellow Texan :) A great place to visit would be the NARBC (reptile show) in Arlington, Tx. It's going on Feb. 12-13th and they usually have a great variety of ball pythons. That's where I picked up my first BP, and there are a bunch of people you can talk too and possibly pick up some cheap stuff for your tank. I plan on going again this year, even if I don't plan on getting anything ;) It's a bit of a wait, but I would definitely go there before purchasing a ball python if you are able. It's totally different to see these morphs in person.

    NARBC

    Welcome to the Forum :)

unfortunately I have to work that weekend :( but there is a great little pet stor about an hour from me that always has great looking BPs, plus I kinda know the owner so may can get a discount. I would love to have one of the amazing morphs, but being my first snake I'd rather just go with a normal BP. Anyways once I get my tank set up I will let everyone see it, and see what they think. Until then thanks for all the help...

Howdy neighbor! I just live down the road a ways from ya'. I live close to Haskell, Texas at Lake Stamford, 'bout 60 miles north of Abilene. Welcome & glad to know another "snake" nut lives close by. I have 2 bps plus several other species of snakes. If I can be of any help sometime just let me know. The pet shops in Abilene are o.k., but I do most of my shopping online now days. Usually a better price on most items.

Good luck with your new bp when you get it, they are addictive! :snake::gj:

    Re: Hello from Texas
Yeah I checked out the stores in Abilene, and didn't see but a few good BPs. Am hoping to maybe go to Odessa or Lubbock, before buying one. I thought about buying online, but would rather purchase one in person. Still haven't gotten anything except a tank and some hides, having to wait till I have the extra cash. Will get pics of my setup once it is done, and of course once I get a BP.
