    my cat attacked my snake...
so I had my snake out, chillin on top of her tank for a split freakin second and one of my cats jumps up and swatted her, claws out, from what i saw. I inspected the snake and i see one scale that looks dented...
do i need to do something? neosporin?
snake seemed unphased cept she was anxious to get back into her hide.

    Hi,

If there are no puctures then I probably wouldn't bother with the neosporin ( if you do use it remember it has to be the kind without painkiller ) and just keep an eye on her for a couple of days.

If there's no blood, the snake is probably fine.

I never allow my dog or cats in the same room when I have my snakes out. You shouldn't either. Cats and dogs are carnivorous and will KILL and EAT your snake.

    Hi,

White might mean they are wood mites - do you use a bark mulch substrate?

Inspect her heat pits and around the rim of her eyes to see if there are any bugs in there and check the waterbowl for what look like black poppy seeds.

    Hi,

You can freeze or bake the bark I think. Or just order a can of Provent-a-mite and pretreat it.

I just started using newspaper instead. :P

Makes for a cleaner cage too as you replace all of it when it gets soiled. :gj:

It lets you see exactly how much liquid they can pee that is currently getting abosorbed into your repti-bark. :O

    p.s.

does anyone remember the cure for smily addiction? I seem to be having a relapse.

You can always get some Provent-A-Mite, but for wood mites, some people just bake the wood and substrate in the oven before using it...

okay, are they harming her right now if they have been on her already im assuming? i can change the repti bark out until i can convince my mom to let me bake it.

    Hi,

No wood mites shouldn't hurt your snake at all. People just tend not to like having bugs in the enclosure.

To reassure yourself they are wood mites you can also wipe the snake down with a wet paper towel - reptile mites would be drinking her blood and pooping on her so, when their droppings are on wet paper down they leach out brown. If any dots or powder do not produce brown rings after ten minutes or so on the paper towel they won't be mite droppings.

welp i freaked out and emptied all the wood from the enclosure lol. i laid paper towels down. but now my question is...is she gonna be able to get under it and sit on top of the heaty pad and burn herself? cus that was my reasoning for putting the carpet, and on top i put the repti bark

If you have your heat attached to a thermostat and set to the proper temperature(90-94) then there is no chance of the snake getting burned!

also i would add.. there is no telling what is on your dog or cat (mites) .. so i wouldnt even let them in your snake area...

Just check the temperature right against the glass and make sure it's within the hot spot range. BPs can and will burrow down to it, and paper towels/newspaper are thin enough that they won't be much cooler on the top

The bugs are deff wood mites, I had them from my repti bark too, I just ran water through it and strained the stuff, a lot. It really helped getting rid of all the nasty dust in there too, the water comes out red looking.

I guess you can bake it too...

I never never never even let my cat in the same room with my snakes because he would swat at them and try to hurt them.

I love my kitties, and generally don't allow them to come near Hagi...
But one time my old cat Cleo jumped up on the bed while I was sitting there holding Hagi, and he actually struck at her! I was kinda hoping he'd land a bite, but he missed because I also sort of freaked out and pulled my hand away... I'd bet if the cat got bit, she'd reconsider next time she approached the snake... :P

True....but Boo is still a little baby. She really doesnt seem to be bothered by my two cats. one of them is completely oblivious to the snake, ( my younger one) but my other cat is obsessed with her. She sits there and stares at Boo's home for hours. they both like to take naps on top of the tank and watch her from above. But Boo doesnt seem to notice or care. A couple times I saw boo stretching up against the side to get a look at the cat but thats about it. I thought showing them the snake would get their mind off of her since theyd know what she was. The one who is obsessed with her is still obsessed. and the other one head bonked the snake, (im sure you other cat owners know what im talking about) so really just the one is annoying about the snake. But i mean, they were here first and its part of their natural instict to want to attack the snake. I'll just have to be more careful and make sure she isnt in the room. They were both laying on my bed at the time and i thought the coast was clear.

Good to know it's not just mine that is, lol. When my dad brought him home, he was the runt of the litter and the other kittens wouldn't let him eat(he got him from his gilfriend) so I guess he felt bad for the lil furball. I did, too.. Buuuuuuuuuut.. 5 months later, I'm convinced the cat is the spawn of satan. He's also no longer an underfed runt, but just annoying and attacks anything that moves, some things that don't, and LITERALLY bounces off of the walls. Do they make aderol for kittens?!

not sure but i know they have prozac LOL. the vet recommended some for my cat that is obsessed with the snake back in the day when she had separation anxiety and she used to poop/pee by the door anytime i left. now she just does it randomly everyday/every other day to piss me off. home or not. they are great..
