How to euthinize a feeder rat without Co2?
I can't afford to make a Co2 chamber and I read that you can just use a mouse trap to euthinize a couple of rats. After all it just snaps their neck real quick and they don't suffer. But the thing is one of the first litters I get I'm going to euthinize for my little cornsnake. But I'm pretty sure using a rat trap on a rat that small will just slice off its head. Is there any other way (besides Co2) to euthinize a newborn rat?

from my expierence its very hard to kill pinkys with co2. i dont even try anymore they get fed live now. they cant do much damage anyways bc theyre so small and weak.

For newborns, just flick them hard on the top of their skull. Instant kill.

A CO2 chamber is cheap. You can literally make it for like $5. . . But yeah, CO2 doesn't work well on pinks.

I know but I want to euthinize a bunch at a time so I can just go to the freezer and thaw out a couple. So do I just break the neck?

I've heard to euthanize pinks some people just put them in the freezer. If you can handle that.

Pinks are difficult. They don't need as much oxygen, so CO2 is not a good option.

However because of their biology, they are very susceptible to the cold. Many people just freeze them. I wouldn't do this on anything more than a day or two old.

For older rodents, cervical dislocation is a great technique. Pin the head (not TOO hard! You don't want to squish them and cause pain) with a pen on the edge of a table, grab the base of the tail, and with a swift yank you can sever the spinal column causing instant death.

Flick them on the back of the head. One flick, instant death.
Their skulls are so soft, they just die from the flick.

    Then freeze.
    Very simple. :)

For newborn it is recommended to put them directly in the freezer due to their resistance to hypoxia.

just feed um live. they cant hurt anything. if you really want um dead tho the freezer or a bucket of water usually works. i use a taser on my larger rodents so i guess you could do that too

@andwhy6 you use a taser? I was telling my wife the other day when my ball can eat full size rats I would like to just use a taser on it and she laughed at me. But you use a taser right? So what taser do you use? and its kills them instantly?

Anything that doesn't have a thick coat and doesn't have it's eyes open yet gets put in the freezer.

Anything after the eyes opening gets it's neck snapped, or if it's at that weird size where my hands can't quite snap the neck, I take some plier and crush the neck. Either one works.

With spazzy large rats, I either hit it on the head with something heavy (a hammer would work for really big adults) or put them in a pillow case and throw them against the garage floor as hard as I can (don't normally as I tend to eff my shoulder up).
Or you can even take an ice chest, put the rat/s in it, and put the lid on it. Come back in 20 minutes and they should be dead from using all the oxygen in there.

EDIT: imo you have no real reason to feed live to a corn. I can't name a single person with a corn that refuses to eat nothing but live. The only time I feed live is when I'm culling pups on the same day I'm feeding my corns.

How the heck do you get both Taser barbs into a target the size of a rat?

Check out my link below...Its a feeding vid and also shows my DIY CO2 chamber which was VERY cheap and utilizes dry ice..which is about a dollar a pound.
