RRRRRR! My job basically just fired me!

I am SOOOO ANGRY!!! I hate this job so much! I've been working here in a group home setting assisting 5 women with mental disabilities for 2 1/2 years now. Every time something happens, someone quits or someone gets hired I get the shaft. The first time they hired people they took away a bunch of my hours, but I was able to get by, barely! The next time it happened someone quit and they gave me all the hours. I worked a 14 hour day, came back 8 hours later for a 16 hour day then went straight to class for almost two months. It was a hell and there wasn't anything I could do about it because I got the 8 hours between shifts.For the last year and half I've been working every single Saturday and Sunday night shift because no one else will work it (that's their drinking days). I've sacrificed a lot for this job, I always come in when they need me, and I've called in twice in 2 1/2 years! I'm not a crappy worker!

So this time they decided to hire a bunch of people and since I graduated from college this month and I'm looking for jobs, I guess they decided to force me to quit. I got my schedule today and I'm going from 25 hours a week to 2 days the entire month!!! I am so far beyond mad! This job is a such a joke.

Is anyone familiar with unemployment for people whose hours are cut? I've already applied for it. I know I don't have to look for jobs, but I have been for about a month now. Also, do I tell my boss or let them tell her? I assume she will find out pretty quick from them? I called my boss, but I'm sure she saw my number and didn't answer. I can't believe they think they can do this to me and I will just sit back and let it happen. I'm the only educated person there, including my boss! That's another thing that really gets under my skin. That and my supervisor worked my same position for a month and quit because she couldn't hack it, then was hired to be a supervisor a year later. :rage:

Steph I would contact your unemployment office I believe if you are dropped in hours to a unlivable level then you should have some help there. Give them a call hun. I am so sorry to hear this hun and I am praying that you get something soon.

Ugh! That's awful.

Sounds to me like this might be a really big blessing in disguise. They don't deserve you!! :hug:

Thank you. I already applied, in Iowa at least, it's all online. I think I will call them tomorrow and ask about the details. Unless they are closed tomorrow, shoot.... My blood is just boiling. I'm one of the most accountable employees there and they have told me that several times. It's really erks me that I'M the person that gets screwed when they hire new people. How does that make any sense! :taz:

I was kinda thinking the same thing. Sounds like you can certainly do better. I hope you find a new job that you actually enjoy.

In state of Michigan if your under 20 Hours a week i believe you can claim unemployment benefits for that week.

This only works if you are hired in full time but arent getting full time hours. Part time benefits are different and im not familiar with them.

Thank you, you're so right! At least now I'll get paid for looking for jobs! I've applied for so many jobs it's ridiculous! The only offers I have been getting are more part time jobs, and commission jobs-selling insurance, I really don't want either one of those :( I hope finding a job gets better once the holidays are over.

Yeah I forgot this is one of those things that really differs from state to state. I know part timers can get it here in Iowa because an old coworker of mine was getting it from a coffee shop and she was only working 15-20 hours a week before she was dropped. I might have to give her a call tomorrow if the office isn't open.

They'll realize how valuable you are once you're gone. Good luck, I hope things work out for you.

Exactly what Markie said...they will realize all this once you are gone and they have to work the crappy shifts. I also agree with Judy.....this IS a blessing in disguise. It will give you time to get your resume perfect and find something else. I am glad you applied for unemployement and you are not obligated to let the boss know at all. Quite honestly she should figure as much.

Since you are looking for another position right now....I would ask her for a written recomendation. This way you can see what she is going to say and also she cannot go back on that and say terrible things about you on a reference. (It happens...even if poor references can bring on serious legal issues for the employer).

Also you are going to have to take some time and interview yourself in the mirror. Sounds stupid ...but seriously. You will be surprised how your face will look when you talk about why you left this company and about your boss/coworkers. With practice you can do this professionally without emotion and really per-fect what you are going to say. The reason I bring this up is my years in the HR industry I saw it all the time. Someone had a really bad time at a position and it just DID NOT come out right. :rolleyes: You know I got your back sister! If you need help with your resume or interviewing....we can work it out via pm. Heck I will even give you the hard behavioral interview over the phone to help if ya want. Anything I can do to help you.

That's CRAZY! I hate places like that! I wish the Military would out me like that though! LOL! Keep your head up and SMILE!!!!

Stephanie they dont deserve you! I bet they try to boost your hours to stop you from getting unemployment :mad:.I would look for another job and let them do the work :gj:

I never thought about a written recommendation. What if she rights a bad one because she acts like a conniving teenage girl? I was talking to a friend of ours and this lady is her cousin's aunt and is a real piece work, and not someone you want to cross. I could see her writing something bad. And thanks for all the advice and info. I think I should send you my resume just to get your input. I went to the career center at the University, but all they said was "looks good to me!" :rolleyes:

Thanks Joe! I wouldn't be surprised if they did that at all. The only problem is that they hired three people at once and they all want hours, we've needed these three people for about a year, but for some reason they waited to hire all three in one month :rolleyes:

send it to me my email address and then we can chat about it. If she writes a bad one then first of all you know she will not be a good reference and second you can remind her that legally negative references is really a personal interpretation and can open the company up to large law suits. This way she will know to say we only give dates of employement. You can use past employers or supervisors as your references at that point and tell the future emp. that they will only give dates. Also you can go directly to the HR dept. for your reference. I guarantee you they will only give dates of employment.

Be sure to let everyone know that you put them down as a reference so that they can expect a phone call (also they will be on the look out for it). Plus lots of times in interviews they will ask you..."what will this person say about you"....then you will have a good idea!!

That sucks! I can totally relate my gf used to work at a group home and I know how poorly some of those places can be ran. I've also been unemployed for over a year and literally put in 100+ apps. The job market is terribly rough right now and you may have to possibly lower your standards. Just keep plugging away update your resume and let your personality shine through. In the end it will all work out. Good luck!
