I have fans blowing outwards 24/7 so even when it does smell it's tolerable.
I don't have that many tubs, just 20 female breeders and 3 males in 9 tubs and a momma rack, but good ventilation goes a long ways towards keeping smells down.

I have never had a problem with rat smell or dust it doesn't bother me at all, I think its 100X worse when a big boa drops a bomb in their tub that looks like a elephant got in their and laid a duce. If you want to spend the money on it, I say go for it if it makes you feel better and you got the money. I don't however wear any mask and I haven't dropped dead "yet" :)

I work with respirators every day the thing to remember is it has to fit well I would not buy one at a hardware store but look up a safety supply. The type of carterage is quite variable a paint fume one (hardware store type) is unlikely to do the job I'd guess an acid gas one would be best but i am guessing. Keep it in an air tight container they work weather you have it on your face or on a table. The life of the cartarages is variable I get about 2 weeks from one but that is with 3 hours a day use.

We change rat bedding once a week and I take a shower when I'm done but I don't wear a mask.

Wow Rich ,and I thought I was a slave driver, lol, I guess the smell just comes with the territory, and oh ya the area I keep the tubs in doesnt have the greatest air flow, so I guess its gonna stink...........basically in a basement with the small screen vents for air

    thnx :)

When given fresh water and food daily they do awesome.

Their also kept at 82f As well and breed like crazy.

I do once a month or so sell my extra off to slim it out as it does get crowed. Doing this setup, i havent ordered mice or bought any in 3 years.

Also Those are mice not rats

I thought any higher than 80F was too high for mice?

I will have to try breeding mice again. I just couldn't do it. Do you keep yours on a STRICT day and night cycle?

Had a derp moment when I posted that. xD This is in the rats area so I thought they were rats without looking real hard.

Mice breed when kept in consistent temps. My temps stay 80-82 all year in room and they do fine.

Most try to keep a 75 and they do just as good. Consistency in temps is the key when breeding any rodents.
