    Is it a Sumatran?
I just recently acquired what I was told was a Sumatran Blood Python, but the more I look at her the less I think she looks like my other Sumatran. If I post a pic of her will you guys be able to tell me if she looks Sumatran?

    I would appreciate it!~

I will try to post the pics tonight, she is a beautiful snake though, she has orange and pink over the top of her head rather than the classic brown color, and it runs down her body and her pattern is weirdly mixed and broken up running down her spine, pretty neat actually, I will take some photos tonight and post em for everyone. Also she is super relaxed, she has not even hissed at me, and has zero head shyness or tail shyness, she will almost immediately start to explore while you hold her and is very active and will flick her tongue at
everything in sight. I am very happy with this snake! She even took a rat 3 days after I picked her up, she did not even hesitate to take it. It was funny because every person at the reptile show was scared of her, they all kept talking about how mean blood pythons are, and I just kept saying how the one I already had is a big baby, but they insisted that bloods have terrible temperaments, even the people I bought it from warned me that bloods are mean snakes, it makes me sad because Bloods are such great snakes in my opinion and so many people must be scared off of them because of these rumors.

They are more than rumors. If you work with bloods extensively, I feel pretty confident you will find some that are 'mean'.

My girl will try to rip your face off, no questions asked.. but she's not even a year old yet and I'm working with her to get used to some handling. So far she's tagged me probably about a dozen times.

That said.. they make great pets and MANY MANY will be fine to handle.

I understand your point, but you could say the same about most species of snakes, I have even met some ball pythons that would try to bite anything that came close. It js just sad to see people automatically disregard a snake because they assume all of them are bad tempered, when some of them can make amazing pets. I just have to say that I am lucky that both of mine are so mild mannered.

Yup! I count my lucky stars, cuz plenty of snakes (especially young ones are snappy, but the ONLY snappy one I've had to deal with is the blood python. Even one of my very young carpet pythons was 'supposed' to be a little devil, but he seriously chilled out after coming home to my place. I just chuck the blood python up to the universe evening the odds on getting placid snakes.

Ditto on looking like brongersmai to me.. then again I'm far from an expert on short tailed pythons. I'm still a little fuzzy on sumatrans in particular.

It is a brongersmai, and it could be sumatran local, but that I wouldn't be able to tell unfortunately... Definately a brong though! And a sweet one at that! Congrats! ~Caylan.S.~

Thats a Bringersmai no doubt about it

Its going to be hard to say definitively whether or not its Sumatran/Malaysian or even Bangka locality. Though anyone with Bangkas usually knows it and would tell you as they are sometimesbred for their pure lineage.

Pure Malaysians are also hard to find, and most Bloods now a days are a mix of the Sumatran and Malaysian localities, or just straight Sumatran.

    Hope that helped:D

    Thanks for the ID guys!

I am actually psyched to hear it is a Brongersmai, because 2KDime ID'd my last blood as the same, I am planning on a breeding attempt when they are both of age.

I have been reducing my collection of snakes recently and condensing down to pairs of my favorite species, I am excited to make my first attempts at snake breeding.

What I want to know is how to tell the difference, think you could help me with that 2KDime?

The best way to ID different species, subspecies, locales etc. is to look at LOTS of pictures/see lots in person.

Our brains are hardwired to take all those mental images of 'brongersmai' and form an ability to better identify 'brongersmai' vs 'not brongersmai' when presented an image of a snake.

    Psychology is fun.

The #1 thing that I noticed about your snake that made me think 'brongersmai' is its coloration.

Here is the post containing the pics of my first blood python, "Goon", he has been ID'd as a Brongersmai as well.

His coloration is not nearly as red or orange, what about his colors say Brongersmai to you?

I am attempting to clarify for my own understanding.

    Re: Is it a Sumatran?
For the one in this post, the color's obviously brongersmai - none of the other short tails would have that coloration. For your other one, it's not just the color but a mix of color and a little bit of pattern (and for yours, the scales - since you posted head shots). The other is quite orange, and those reds and oranges aren't usually in a borneo. It can be kind of subtle sometimes, but when you've seen enough of them you'll start to pick up on it. There is a lot of variation in color for brongersmai, but even those that aren't red are usually a little more orange, and they aren't as dark dorsally as a normal borneo - as babies, anyway. I'm trying to think of what it is exactly that I see, but I am not sure if that's it or not. :P I know I can see the difference.

She's young, I will bet you she'll grow out of it - even without a lot of handling. They seem to have a tendency to be a little extra defensive when they're young. One of my first was like that, too. I could read him and avoid getting bit usually, but if I had him out he would strike at everything. He was like that for maybe a year and a half, then he just grew out of it. He's still the feistiest of my 5 short tails, but he's very very easy to handle now when he's out of the cage. He hisses, but they all do. :D
