Tip proof water bowl?
So my new female has been tipping her bowl like every 15 mins. Wolfy recommended a ceramic crock dish. Well for a massive one was $7 but then i seen this. For $1.65.
I tried to put pressure on the sides to tip it myself and was unable to! What you guys think?

Re: Tip proof water bowl?
It has a relatively big "foot print" so will take up a lot of floor space. Not necessarily a bad thing, depending on your setup, but something that needs to be taken into consideration. Also, the gaps beneath it will encourage your ball python to crawl UNDER it...and potentially tip it over from that direction.
I like the heavy ceramic crocks...which can sometimes be found at various "dollar stores" for just a couple bucks.

We are using the ceramic dog bowl from petsmart, think it was like $10

Yea the only decent size ones they had was $7. I figure she tips this one ill just give it to one of the others and hide the gap under the aspen for the littler ones :P

Re: Tip proof water bowl?
for my bigger girl i use the rock dishes you can get from a petstore. she crawls thru it and drags the water around but she has never spilled it.
and like the others said i would be worried about ur snake going underneath it and spilling it that way.

Re: Tip proof water bowl?
you could check with schools art departments or a pottery store of some nature, maybe a local artist... or figure out who has a kiln. I'm sure they have deformed stuff or things that kids in class made but don't want...it may even be fun to make em yourself...

Re: Tip proof water bowl?
haha i may just go and pay $7 for one if it doesnt work haha
Just hate to have to pay $7 for a water bowl lol :P
-
Re: Tip proof water bowl?
ya 7$ is kind of a lot just for a waterbowl but in my mind i see it as worth it cuz i dont have to keep changing and drying the paper in the tubs and if i dont catch it for some reason right away she could get scale rot or something.

Re: Tip proof water bowl?
use a 16oz deli cup with a 4" pvc coupler. The coupler is like 2 bucks and the deli cup is about 5 cents a piece.
-
I use velcro to hold it in place. The bigger the ball the bigger the square of velcro we use

I was actually thinking about this.
You buy the stuff urself or order offline?
If so where are you getting it :)

The thing that jumps right out at me with that red bowl is the fact that they can get under it and flip it that way. I used to use dog bowls until my redtails started doing that. Now I use glass pyrex bowls from Wal Mart. The large ones run about $8 for four and the smaller ones run about $6 for four if I remember right. They very rarely get tipped and they're big enough for a ball.
I've used the velcro thing too, but my only complaint about it is that if they do make a mess and you have to scrub down the tub, that will mess up the velcro that's stuck to the bottom of the tub after a few times.

I get the couplers from either Home Depot or Loews and the deli cups from www.foodservicedirect.com

I use that exact bowl in all of my corn snake cages, but i have found that ceramic dog/cat bowls from walmart work great in the ball and boa cages.
-
I have trouble with my big girls tipping their dishes over as well. Even the big ceramic ones. I just use stainless steel dog water/food bowls now. They can't tip those over. :) $2 each at the dollar store for the large ones.

I agree! lol
I just upgraded some of my problem tippers to the stainless steel this weekend. So far so good. I'll try the PVC next.

My BP did this for a while too. I went to wal-mart and baught a ceramic dog dish. It works, and she has never tipped it over ever since.

$2 for a large stainless steel dog bowl is getting ripped off? Show me where I can get it cheaper, then. 'Cause that's the cheapest I've seen.. :P
Prices range anywhere from $0.25 to $2 at this place.

Thats exactly what im thinking
And the reason im thinking about going the PVC route is because atm i have 12 snakes.
(amazing 12 snakes in less then a year WTF?)
But ANYWAYS cleaning the water bowls is a bit annoying. Id rather pay $2 each and the cups to just throw away and get another.
Also update on the bowl that the thread is about. iv put it in the BIG GIRLS tub. shes close to 1800 grams. So she has not even tried to go under it, hasnt tipped. Moved it to the other side and around but has no tipped it. Her head is almost the size of the hole. I think she has no intention to even try to hide under it soo..

I use the PVC pipe end cap things from the hardware store. Cheap, and have yet to be tipped! I had to sand down the edge a little, but that's about it :D

Yea monk just linked me to deli cups $31.75 for 500 comes to about $0.06 per cup. $2 a holder.
I think its worth it for the peace of mind no tipping and no cleaning water bowls no more. Cleaning 12 bowls is a pain in the butt.
-
just an idea but what worked for my BP was i glued pennies to the bottom of the waterbowl and it doesn't tip!

It was a joke. You said you bought them at the dollar store. So you paid twice as much as I would have paid for them at a dollar store.
On a side note, my baby pastel tipped the steel bowl over last night. Guess I'll try the PVC.

Thanks - glad somebody picked up on that ;)

Re: Tip proof water bowl?
I use ceramic bowls with all 13 of my snakes and have never had a spilled water dish. It's worth the few extra bucks to me.
-
Re: Tip proof water bowl?
For those of you that are using the PVC coupler with deli cups, how long do you use the cup before you toss it?

I still don't think you do, but whatever.....
Acceptable responses would be.....
- lol, how do they get away with ripping people off like that??
- They came in two-packs. :gj:
- Inflation, what can you do?
- There use to be a time when everything at the dollar store only cost a dollar. Now it's more like "try and find the one item that only costs a dollar".... :weirdface
Not
