New need collection assistance :D
Hey everyone I need a bit of help starting off my collection, ive always wanted to have ball pythons now i have the chance and the room to start a collection. I got my 1st snake a month ago I thinks it is a male normal but he looks a bit liek a vanilla. But I need help with what morphs i sould start off my collection with to make some gems like all of you. I know a bit about crossing morph and what comes out and some times it takes 2 of the same morph to make super or different morph.
But what should i get? im getting a male and female normal so i can make more morphs when i buy them but what ones? im thinking Mojave, Vanilla, Pastel, Axanthic but what do you recomend.

i like pinstripes to
-
ive seen pinstripes they are amazing but is that a dominate gene? or recesive? i was told with some snakes i need pair i think those are ones i was told of.
-
start with the morph you like the most.
-
see im not sure what is a base morph to start with, i keep reading about how theres normal or base morphs and some morphs are resessive and some are designer so i dont know where to start. all i have is a normal male and i dont know what to get ot start of with, i dotn want to find out i got a designer morph and breed it to a normal to get it and normal babies only yo get all nomals out of it. id love them all the same still but id like to not make a mistake in the start.

Yes its dom just like the mojo. The pastel u mentioned is co-dom along with vanilla i do believe. Axanthic is recessive.

Well mojo is codom too.
Here is how it goes you have dom = spider, pinstripes.
codom = pastels, mojo/lessor/butter
recessive = albinos and Axanthic
not all by no means just a few common ones you might see when looking around. the doms have a 50% chance of showing up when bred to a normal. the codoms have a 50% chance when bred to a normal. codoms also have a 25% chance of producing a super form when bred back to the same morph. recessive when bred to a normal will produce all normal snakes that are 100% het for the morph. a het bred back to the morph will produce 50% visuals and 50% morphs. just do a little more reading and you will find out a bunch.
-
So should I start with dom and codom morphs? and avoid recessive for now because those require a pair to get the same morph or i need a HET right?
-
well what are you looking to do just make new morphs or what. what kind of morphs do you like to start with?

Up to you
Correct me if im wrong guys?
Recessive
het x het = 25% visual, 50% hets, 25% normals (so its 66% pos.het Morph) because u dont know the diff between hets/normals for most things?
Het/Visual = 50% visual, 50% hets
Visual/Visual = All visual
Now with dom
Visual/normal = 50% visual, 50% normals
visual/visual is 75% spiders, 25pct normals?
And like for co dom like pastel u can do
Visual/normal = 50% visual, 50% normals
visual/visual = 50% pastel, 25% super pastel, 25% normals
Correct guys?

Ive done a lot of reading in the past week or so but im still fuzzy :( thanks for the simple break down :). But i still dont know what to start with.
Say if i get a pastel female make it do its thing with a mojave male id get something different copies of mom and dad right? but its i do pastel female with normal male i only get normals and pastels right? or just nicer looking normals?
I just dont want end up paying alot of a nice snake to only have to wait to get another of the same or a HET to get it back like ive read with recessive. or is that even true? exaple axanthic i need 2 of those or 1 and a het to egt that pattern back but if i do spiders together i cant make a super spider cause it dies.
I just want a few snake type to start making more and different babies each time and not hit a genetic brick wall starting off.

Re: New need collection assistance :D
Also to add to my thing if u do dom x co dom
like spider x pastel
U can make bumble bees
If i was u just starting out i wouldnt do to much with the recessive if u look to make back a little on what u spent by producing them.
Also anything u get i would make it a female.. since it takes a lot longer to get them to breeding size.

Re: New need collection assistance :D
Well if it was me and i did this a few years back i got 2 real nice strong codom males "Bee & Lessor" and 2 real nice strong codom females "Pinstripe & Butter" i also picked up 8 of the best looking CH bush baby ball pythons out of a lot of about 1000 pick all the best looking reduced patterns with the lightest colors. my ideal was bee x pinstripe = spinner blast didnt hit on it till 2009 =[ and lessor x butter = BEL i didnt hit any all slugs sold the pair to a friend he ended up with the best odds i ever seen 8 eggs 3 butters 2 lessors and 5 BELs he has 2 sets of twins. But enuff of my sad story. If your looking to make something cool to look at ill go for the all white or all black snakes so a pair of mojos or a pair of black pastels.
-
Ok now that i know what gene type to go with, what should i look out for? so far i want to find a mojave, vanilla, yellow belly, butter, and a pastel, but what is the difference in the pastels? Like there is blacks and oranges but could and orange give you a black?
-
I am not by any means trying to discourage you from breeding at all. But I see so many ppl want to breed every day so I feel I should say this. Breeding bp's is a HUGE responsibilty, when I forst got into them, that's exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to become a bp breeder, but I've learn so much I've actually been discouraged and will leave it to the big dogs. If and when you decided to breed make sure that if for some reaon no one buys your hatchlings, that you are ready to keep them. Also since you probably wont be breeding this year, and depending on the size of your females, you may or may not breed next year either, take into account the pace at which a lot of these base morph values are decreasing. Just earlier this year I bought a 2010 pastel male for $125, I can get the same snake from the same source now for about $90. Sadly a lot of morphs are losing value. So if I were you, I'd save up money and try and buy maybe 2-3 morph females, and 1 morph male that when combined with those females, make other morphs.
Or you can just stick to recessives and pray you hit something good.
Either way good luck, hopefully the market raises again for all of us. And keep us updated as to what you have decided to breed.
-
if your just starting out, go all codoms, recessives personally take to long.
if you wanna pop out some wicked jems and get your collection
up and strong,
load up on pins, mojo's, pastels, enchi, woma, butter/lessers, cinnamons, fires, yellowbellys, spiders.
all these you can find relativley less than 500. and combineing them in different ways you'd get wicked combo's.
some of the 2-gene combo's aren't that much and definately you should get ONLY what you like best.
on a side note, Bee's arent more than 5-700 for a really good quality bumble bee.
good luck!

I want to breed my own snake not snakes for sale but for personal collection, i have no intent on trying to make money of my snakes i just want to be able to make my morphs and not pay to have them. ive had a lot of people be like oh well dont get into it its expensive and takes a long time. I know what im getting into i know how long they live how unlikely it is for me to sell my snakes or get the morph i want 1st try. I love animals and i have a real big spot for ball pythons and i have the time and cash.
Thanks sookieball for the types im still stuck waiting till april until the hatchling are out at the expo's in abundance. i want babies raise them then make new babies new morphs:D

as for ur first morphs i would definitely get a female pastel because pastel is always something good to have in ur collection and maybe a mojo or cinny or something watever u like

Then by all means breed away. I actually plan to breed my snakes as well, and for the same reason. But only to land my very own BEL. I feel I'll appreciate it that much more. Good luck.

So this morning i almost died i got to open up reptiles and we got 12 babies balls in, they guy says they are all Normal but he told me he had them all in 1 big incubator. But i think he slipt on 2 of them. Im not sure but i need your help i might be able to get a mojave and a pastel baby for 50 each, lazy boss want to charge me 15 on top of store price lol. But ive looked at them all day and im almost positive they are, the pastel is alot lighter compared to the other ones in the tank its much more khaki yellow then then normal brown/copper, and she has 2 bright yellow spots on he nose the no other snakes in the batch have. She has one silver and one black eye. and the mojave is red copper has 2 "aliens" on it has the flames on the sides and the head is dark, i think its a male but he stick out in the tank like a sore thumb.
But if i put pictures on here of the ones in store and 2 two im looking at can you guys check them out for me and steer me in which ones if they arnt what i think they are.
we also have a pastel i think its a male not sure

Re: New need collection assistance :D
A word of advice to all of you. I think you'll find in the coming years, that some prices will stop dropping and not because they've bottomed out, but because the market is so strong. That is if they don't actually go up. The demand for BP morphs is finally starting to catch up to the supply, so don't necessarily expect those 50% price drops every year
