why did you choose to keep anacondas?

ok so at the show i went to today, i was walking around and found a cbb 09 green anaconda and picked it up expecting to look and not touch (heard they are nippy when young but the guy offered to let me hold it! and i can now say my next giant :rolleyes: will be a green, and im in love the strength of this this was INSANE and it was maby 2.5 feet and about as thick as a mandrin orange id guess. well lon story short im in love and am curious what got you guys into keeping both yellow and greens and why you enjoy keeping them.

i know they are a harder species to keep and am really curious what makes you decide they where worth the extra mile and why u enjoy keeping them

They are actually my favorite of all the constrictors. I love greens to death and I dont really find there that much harder to take care of the others. The only thing is the larger water tubs take a bit longer to clean and disenfect and refill but other then that I dont think there that much different. They are much stronger then the others Ive dealt with which makes them harder to handle by yourself when they get bigger. Cookie is really the only snake that I have a time with getting back into her cage when she doesent want to go. Unfortunatly I lost my male a few years ago due to a thermostat malfunction on a stack of ap cages. But im hoping to add another sometime early next year.

yeah the one i held was a male, and really sealed the deal for me i will have to add one to my collection in the very near future lol. just keep nagging the gf till she breaks and says yes =)

I had always loved how they looked, but never really considered it. A friend of mine has 2 female greens, and after holding them, I knew I had to have one. Mine is still a nippy little worm, but he's doing great. Definitely one of my favorite snakes in my collection.

I keep/have kept annies (yellow now; green previously) because I am suicidal.

But after years of trying, they just don't want to kill me.

Seriously, they are gorgeous. Strong is an understatement. Impressive to say the least.
I love them.

whats the adult size on a male? isnt it close to a burms size? i want one so bad lol waiting is gonna be rediculously hard

I have only ever kept females; couldn't say the average size of a male (green or yellow); but I would think somewhere in the 10 foot range for greens and 7 foot for yellows.

Perhaps someone with a male of either species over 5 yrs old will chime in...

For the record, my female is 4 yrs old and in the 10 foot range (yellow).

do you think a yellow would be a prerequiset for a green or can greens be just as calm as burms? size really isnt an issue lol and i know these are noobish questions but i try to shy away from google whenever possible and ask/talk with the more experienced and get first hand knowledge

Reason I like my yellow so much is the overall look of the snake. I like how the head and neck are proportianate with each other. Mines only about 4 months old and nearly 3ft long eating small rats. He's a monster. Last night he somehow folded the rat in half while coiling and you heard the spine snap. Some insane power for a baby still. He's very nice to handle too. Struck once when I first got him and been nice ever since.

If you know how to establish trust with snakes then there isn't a giant species that will remain aggressive. Starting with a youngster really helps.

the only thing about condas is half the time when the bit you never see it coming. With burms and retics I can usually tell when Im about to get striked at. With anacondas they just kind of get you. They can basically turn there heads around to so its very easy for them to get you on the arms while you holding them. it sucks getting side swiped

I'm interested in getting one eventually too. Would a yellow or green be the best choice for a first time anaconda owner?

its all up to the owner. There both great snakes. Of course the greens are going to be much larger.

Its really up to what you want. Try getting it as a baby so it gets used to being handled and wont be agressive. My yellow is just as nice as my ball pythons and my boas. He loves being held and being out of his cage. Definitly my best and most favorite snake.

I think ill get a yellow then. Haven't had too much experience with big snakes other an 9ft boa I used to have.

a green anaconda only grows 10f? wow isnt that like a RTB?

That would be a yellow anaconda your talking about. I just read they get to about 10-12 feet & the greens get around 18 feet or bigger

lol yeah thought so i thought they got around 20 feet lol

I've never ever seen a pic of a green bigger than 17 feet, wild or captive.

yeah everything i read said that female yellows get around 9 or 10 feet, and male greens stay roughly the size of a burm, but weigh a little more

Ive heard 6-8 for males and 10-12 for females. My male yellow is already well over 3ft at 6 months of age. Ive heard people say that anacondas grow slower than other snakes but i dont know. Mine seems to be growing rather quickly.
