Some ASF Colors! Lots of Pics!
-
Your first one there, is a Platinum. Platinum is solid white with black eyes and black ears.
If it had white ears, it would be a black eyed white. :)
The yellow ones with red eyes are called Argente. They are a diluted version of Agouti. It's recessive and very easy to breed.
If you're interested at all, you should come to the ECMA show in Pigeon Forge TN on December 18th. I'm bringing some ASFs there for sale and trade, and would love to get some of your mostly white ones. :)
We have similar goals in mind. I am also striving to create some standard markings and colours in ASFs. I'd like to see them come into the mainstream as pets, and eventually it would be nice to have them in shows like mice and rats. :D
It doesn't look like you have any Ruby eyed agoutis in there. I do, and I'll be bringing lots of them to the show with me. ;)

Re: Some ASF Colors! Lots of Pics!
Thanks Rhasputin!
I wish that I could make the trip! I would love to trade some! Thanks for all the information on all of the colors. The platinum is a female. She was taken from another group and placed with my original breeders because I lost one because of a tub accident (broken neck). They adopted her and hopefully she will produce some nice babies down the road. I am not certain, but believe that the reduced pattern is also a recessive trait. That would be my guess anyways. The 3rd pic is my new breeding group. They have a while to grow up, but I can't wait to see what I get. The male has the red eyes.

OOOH! I want that platinum! The lesser black spots the better! How do I get one? I'm in florida!
-
Very cool ASFs. All you guys are getting me interested more and more in ASFs. That little white one (platinum) is sooooo cute!:P
-
Jesse, I'm doing my best to get some Platinums, BEWs, and PEWs. So eventually maybe I can get some to you. :D
The only trouble is getting my ass to Kentucky, or Ohio to grab some! :P
-
Cool, all of mine look the same :(
Too bad you are not in Texas - I would have to get some from you.
-
Your seem to be pretty friendly also! Great colors, i wish i could even find ASF's around here!

Re: Some ASF Colors! Lots of Pics!
Thanks! If anyone ever makes it to Ohio, I would love to trade! New blood is always good! If all goes well in a few months, I should be getting more white little guys! I don't travel very much. I have too many animals. Maybe a few times a year to Michigan for the American Bulldog show and thats it.

Yes, and no. They're illegal in some states, so technically you're not allowed to ship them through those states.
But if the shipping route goes through no states where the ASFs are illegal, then it's fine.
Which is nearly impossible to do if you're more than a few states apart. :(

Re: Some ASF Colors! Lots of Pics!
Thanks Rhasputin! Is their a reason why they are illegal in some states?
-
It's a really stupid ban on African mammals. It's really only supposed to effect things like lions, gazelle, baboons, hyenas and other stupid things like that. But since the law is worded loosely, some other animals sometimes get put under the law.
That's why in some places African Hedgehogs are illegal too. Here in VA, we have the law, but we're allowed to have Egyptian Spiny mice (but not nile spiny mice), ASFs, and African hedgehogs.
There are some states where one person will tell you they're illegal, and another will tell you they're not. It's absolutely awful!

Re: Some ASF Colors! Lots of Pics!
want to support your claim with some facts please?
Most states put a ban on animals they feel are a threat to "indigenous" species. African really has no bearing.
With that said, there WAS a ban on many african rodents due to the Monkey pox out break. Note the word, "was".
The monkey pox ban was federal.

Re: Some ASF Colors! Lots of Pics!
Curious, how do you plan to ship and control where you ship through?
To the best of my knowledge, you can only ship mammals terminal to terminal via an airport legally unless you plan to pay a personal/private carrier to do so for you.
-
Yes, you ship through air lines, or private couriers. But couriers are expensive.

Re: Some ASF Colors! Lots of Pics!
I agree. I also raise American Bulldogs! Shipping through the Airlines for an 8 week old pup runs $250-350. You also have to have a health certificate from a vet for each puppy plus buy the Airline approved crate. I'm not sure how they would do it for rodents. I usually use a private dog transportation service when I can. Airlines also have lots of weather restrictions making shipping sometimes impossible.
-
Shipping mice by airline is about $180 including the cost of making a shipping crate.
