lol I was talking to a girl that works at Petco, she was talking how "mean" and "evil" this one BP they had was because when she was feeding it it missed the mouse dangling from her hand and tagged her finger. Now she refuses to handle it at all...

Good luck with you new BP! I have no doubt he/she is much better off with you.

Ahh man i love hedgehogs, i used to own one. The old and blind ones are the best and usually the friendliest!!

Also i have rescued a Ball Python from the PetSmart that i work at. He has been in my care for about 3 weeks and during that time he has eaten for me every 2-3 days and poops ALL the time. At work he didn't eat on his own for 4 months, he went to the vet numerous times for weeks at a time, always got assist fed. I take him home, assist feed him once, then every other time he has eaten on his own and just yesterday took a live one.

I feel as long as you put this one in a small tub with a tight fitting hide and a water dish and LEAVE him alone for about 2 weeks, he should calm down and realize he doesn't have to be so defensive.

Being hes new if you were to offer food i would of done it a day after he had some time to settle in. Def not wise to feed a new snake in a feeding box and 99% of them will not eat.

Since you offered him already wait till this time next week and feed in his cage. Do not take him out.

No way!! That's awful! I did not even know they would do that, even at the terrible conditions of petsmart! I wish they would just stop selling them, very sad...

Most of the pet stores in our area have stopped selling pythons and are even slowly weeding off selling other reptiles such as Bearded Dragons. When asked the general response I get is that the buyers bring their snakes back dead less than a month after purchase and want refunds.
I'm also seeing alot more balls popping up on Craigslist too from owners who have lost interest for one reason or another. sad indeed...

I see so many BP's on Craigslist. I keep telling my girlfriend that if we had the money and the space, I'd adopt every last one of them. I've only seen normals but wow, some of them are gorgeous! We're looking into getting another, but she wants a young one. She's more comfortable with raising it herself, which I can understand. I wouldn't mind adopting a 3-4 foot long one though. Would be funny to check out my dog's reaction when I bring Gene back into the bedroom and walk back out with a four foot long monster!

All the Balls I see on Craigslist have been normals. It just really gets me that these people don't do their research on these animals and go ahead and bring them home and then realize just how much care they take to keep them healthy.
I actually rescued one ball python from a couple who, according to their own words, "bought the snake on a whim." When they got him home they realized they didn't have the stomach to feed the snake rats, either frozen/thawed or alive. So, they kept the snake 3 months without it eating when I took it from them. That poor snake was so malnourished when I got him home. Thankfully I got him in time. He's doing wonderful now and is a very happy snake once again.

I was in a pet store the other day looking for some supplies with my wife so we decided to check out their reptile section just to see what they had since they mostly sell fish there. They had a ball but couldnt find him... though he was in his hide... next thing you know im lookin at the tank with the beardies in it and there sits the BP inbetween two tanks 2 levels above his tank... So I guess you could say i rescued him because if he had not been found he would have most likely frozen to death out of his tank in that store.... too bad i was not able to take him from that place. :tears:

smoffler, I'm glad you rescued the little guy. I work at PetSmart (dog trainer) and luckily we have knowledgable people in our store. Sometimes, depending on who's working, they will call me over to grab a snake for someone. The balls are snippy alot, but they don't really get handled. Usually, when I reach in, they are calm since I am, and then I hand it to the customer and they don't get to see the "horrible monster". I always expain that they CAN get bit, but it's not that bad. They're just babies.
We've had a couple returned because they're "SO mean", and when it comes down to it, they're just a scared baby that calms down instantly when the right customer comes along and knows how to act with them.

Re: Saving a bp from petsmart!!
We had an experience with our Petsmart that was quite different from the others described. We were getting supplies and stopped to snoop in the reptile department. They had a lovely ball baby who was almost dark enough to be a cinnamon, so we asked to see it. Even though it was a little skinny and appeared to be a bit dehydrated, my husband fell in love and we took it home. The next day the snake was quite lethargic and we thought perhaps it was making some popping noises so we took it back. They brought it to their vet (a Bansfield in their store.. not too reassuring) the next day and were told it was just fine. The store called us and reported the findings but told us that if we still wanted the snake, they would see if Corporate would let them take it to a herp vet of our choice for a second opionion. We took them up on it.

Long story short, they took it to a well-respected herp vet in our area who also gave it a clean bill of health. He fed it and verified the little babe is a she. We re-purchased her and she's been great. She fed for us on feeding day for our other snakes, three days afer we brought her back home.

I just wanted to add this to the thread because we were quite surprised at how far they were williing to go at that Petsmart for the little baby and us.

BTW, she was housed in a clean, small tank with only one other tiny ball and they had it set up so they had quite a bit of privacy... Log hide up against the back wall with a plant between it and the front glass.
