Quarantining a CB hatchling from a well-reputed breeder?
Earlier this year I bought a captive-bred axanthic ball python from a well-reputed breeder, and asked I him to hang onto her for an extra week so I could clear out my quarantine area before she arrives. He was surprised (and maybe a little insulted?) that I would bother quarantining a CB hatchling, and took the proverbial :grabbed: out of me for the rest of the phone conversation.

Of course I laughed along and admitted I was totally neurotic about IBD. And then went and PAM-ed the quarantine tank for good measure.

(I bet you didn't know we had that smiley? No, you didn't.)

Well I guess some people would be offended

I can tell you that no matter who I get a snake from, from well known breeders to friends all the snakes are quarantined for 60 days and I expect people I sell to or do loan with to do the same.

It's nothing personal it's just the way I do it, every incoming snake goes in QT and get the PAM treatment NO EXCEPTION ;)

Doesn't matter how old the snake is or if I'm buying from Joe Schmoe or the Queen of England. New animals are quarantined. Period. Someone questioning my decision to quarantine every snake that enters my collection would make me instantly suspicious of THEIR quarantine practices--and only solidify my decision to quarantine that critter.

Always tossed in QT, Just cause coming from a big name breeder dont mean they are 100% healthy.

100% agree with all the posts...I've got some snakes from the big names and some have come to me less than perfect (with less than par resolution/communication when presenting the issue)...QT no matter what or be willing to reap the consequences...

Basically, that's why I broke out the PAM at the end of that phone call. Not that the snake had any problems! But still.

I left her in QT for an extra month, too.

I haven't brought in new animals in over a year. Brought home feeder insects and bedding from a show, and all of a sudden, I have mites. The bedding was from a very well known breeder, and the feeders were from a well known local source. Needless to say, I'm rather frustrated, and think you should never waver from your quarantine regimen.

I never used to quarantine my balls, as I always pick up my stock either from very good friends, or very respectable breeders, but a year ago, I purchased a morph at the CRBE from a very large, very well known breeder just across the border from me (I'm in Ontario) and the animal exhibited signs of an RI a day after she came home.
    ALWAYS quarantine.

I QT around 3 weeks. I have had balls enter the rack quicker than that though. A fecal test is done on all new snakes before they enter the rack after at least 2 weeks of QT.

There is only 1 person I buy from that I dont always quarantine stuff from, and she lives about 2 miles from me and I am at her house visiting and talking snakes with her on a very regular basis. I know her and the quality of her animals extremely well and she is my only exception. Generally quarantine for a minimum 2 months from anyone.
