What kinds of morphs can I get from my normal female?
I just obtained a baby female Ball Python, it is my first snake. I absolutely love her and find her fascinating. I have been reading everything I can find about her care and I have decided that I would like to eventually breed them but I am getting really confused about it. I want to get a baby male that is a different morph that will let me breed it with my normal female to get some non normal babies in the future. I have found some ones that I like but I am reading that some of them you need to have both the parents be non normal to get any babies that are non normal morphs. For instance, if my normal female breeds with a Axanthic male will any of the kids have a chance to be Axanthic? If not, what male can I get that will breed with my female for a chance of the children to be of that kind? Anyhow, pard my ignorance, I am new to this. :(

The reason that if you bred an Axanthic to your normal you will get all normal looking snakes het for Axanthic is becuase the Axanthic gene is recessive. In order for it to show there must be a Axanthic gene from both the male and female passed to the babie.
What you are looking for is a male with a Codom gene. Such as a:
Lesser
Pastel
Mojave
Cinnamon
Black Pastel
etc (tons more)
I'm not very good at explaining genetics so I would reccomd checking out this post about them:

That should get you up to speed.

Re: What kinds of morphs can I get from my normal female?
If I bred a normal and a Axanthic and then bred those children would their children have a chance for it?

Re: What kinds of morphs can I get from my normal female?
Is the spider morph one that is condominant?
I appreciate your response.

Re: What kinds of morphs can I get from my normal female?
You want a co-dom or a dominant male. Axanthic is a recessive, parents have to have a copy of the gene (being axanthic or a het) to provide babies who aren't normal looking, however, an axanthic male would give you all 100% hets, they would look normal, but carry the gene.
For instant results of a morph in only one breeding, you need a co-dom or dom.
Some of those would be:
Pastels, spiders, pinstripes, mojaves, butters/lesser, so on and so forth. Or you can get double codom/dom morphs like: Bumblebees, spinners, lemonblasts, pastaves, so on so forth.
Any of those will have a chance of popping out a morph baby.:)

Spiders are dominant. If you bred a Spider male to your normal female each egg woul dhave a 50% chance of being a Spider and a 50% chance of being normal.
If you bred a Axanthic male to your normal female each egg would look normal and would be het Ananthic. If you took a baby het Axanthic female from that clutch and bred it back to the Axantic male each egg would have a 50% chance of coming out Axanthic and 50% chance of being a het Axanthic.

Re: What kinds of morphs can I get from my normal female?
Wow, thanks for that link. I do not fully understand it but it has helped. From what I gather.
My normal and any co-dom or dominant can give me a chance to get babies that are the same as each.
The recessive ones mean I need both mother and father to have that gene.
I guess the only thing I still cant figure out is. Normal female with recessive type dad=children that have the recessive gene and can make children who of that recessive pattern?

Re: What kinds of morphs can I get from my normal female?
Oh, so I was right! Except my lingo is all noobish. Thankyou guys! Man, I love this stuff and I love Eve, my little normal female Ball Python. :)

Re: What kinds of morphs can I get from my normal female?
I will need to call the guy who told Eve to me and find out if what her parents our, maybe she has a gene I dont know about.

Congrats on your new Ball Python and welcome to the wonderful world of Ball Python morphs!
If you are serious about going into morphs I would recommend checking out one of these books.
Pythons of the World, vol.2 from VPI. This is by far the most complete book on Ball Pythons. Every detail you could ever want to know, from how well thier eyesight is to indepth breeding and care, also has a ton of differant morph pictures http://www.vpi.com/pythons_of_the_world_vol_2_0
Designer-Morphs 2nd edition, by John Berry. This just came out last month. It is the largest and most current book of morphs availible. Over 600 color morph photos in it. http://www.designermorphs.com/

I would put money on her being a normal. If she was a carrier (Het) or a possible carrier (Possible Het) for any recessive gene...breeders don't normally let them get away as normals.
Congrats on the new snake.

One of your questions was, what happens if you breed a het animal to a normal animal? The answer is, 50% of the offspring will be het...but there will be no way to tell which ones are which until they are bred to prove it, so the entire clutch would be called "50% possible hets".
When you breed two het Axanthics together, you would get 25% Axanthics, and the rest of the clutch would look normal--but only 25% of them would be normal, the rest would be het for Axanthic. So, the normal-looking babies would be called '66% possible hets'.
If you breed an Axanthic to a normal, you would get 100% het animals--all would look normal, but carry the gene.
If you breed an Axanthic to a het Axanthic, 50% would be Axanthic, and the remaining 50% would be 100% het animals.
If you want 50% morphs in a clutch from your normal female, breed her to any dominant or co-dominant animal. There is a LONG list of co-dominant morphs, and a shorter list of true dominant morphs (pinstripe is a true dominant--spider is not, because there are no super-spiders (animals that look like spiders but carry 2 copies of the gene, so would produce 100% spider offspring when bred to a normal).

Here, try this link. It's a Genetic Wizard, helps determine the outcomes of a breeding. I use this quite often in 2x/3x morph breedings...:gj:

Re: What kinds of morphs can I get from my normal female?
Thanks for all the info!
I picked up a male Pastel today. He is a bit smaller then my female normal but I both are 2009's. The male is probably a few months younger or something.

With a pastel, ypu have a 50% chance at pastels! Here is another great site on genetics: http://www.ballpython.ca/genetics.html

Re: What kinds of morphs can I get from my normal female?
How much am I looking at paying for a female or a female and a male black axanthic or normal axanthics? Would my male pastel and a female axanthic or black axanthic produce anything cool?
-
Re: What kinds of morphs can I get from my normal female?
Anyone know how much I am looking to pay for a baby female and male Axanthic from a reputable breeder? Where is the best place to get these beautiful animals, i've heard people speak of VPI.

Breeding your male pastel with a female axanthic would give you babies that are either
Pastel 100% Het Axanthic
or
Normal 100% Het Axanthic
If you produced a Male Pastel 100% Axanthic with that pairing you could then breed him back to the Mother Axanthic and possibly produce a Pastel Axanthic
Axanthic Prices: 2010 Pair probably $1000+

does my female BP show any signs of morphs other than normal?
hello everyone, i purchased my first and only BP 2 years ago. she is a female, normal (from what everyone i asked online said) possibly pastel or yellow belly. i took her to a couple shops who said she shows some signs of yellow belly and others said pastel. but when i asked online on facebook on a group specifically for ball pythons (no one there is an expert, they all deal with BP or have been for years so they have some experience IMO) everyone said she is 100% normal. im curious about this as i recently became interested in breeding (did not consider it when i first purchased her as i didnt expect to fall in love with her as i did).
either way, she is still not ready for breeding, she is 961 grams as of two days ago and still has at least another 5-600 grams to add on but i dont want to purchase an adult male when the time comes, so i want to know more about my BP so i can purchase a young healthy male with the morph that i decide on (based on her genetics) and have him grow into adultery by the time she becomes ready hopefully.
i apologize about the super long post, im just confused on what she might be from all i have heard.
any and all help in identifying any possible morphs is appreciated. and thanks to anyone who has something to say in advance!
here are some pictures i've taken of her.
