A Way To Euthenize
Has anyone took a completely sealed container and used a vacuum pump to completely suck the air out?
-
So basically vacuum sealing a live animal? I don't think so.
-
Same concept but using a sealed box and doing it. I would do it to kill the rat before feeding it. The snake strangles it to kill it. I'd be doing it so the rat won't put up a fight with the snake while he strangles it.

what you wanna do sounds kinda mean, like drowning but without the water. just place the rat on its belly on the counter, put the handle of a wooden spoon is what i use across the back of its neck and give its tail a tug upward to break the neck. its instant. or you can go drop a dollar and 35 cents on a pound of dry ice if you dont want to get your hands dirty.
if you dont know how to do that, just put dry ice in a bowl, place it in a smaller tub with the rat and pour water on the ice and close the tub. check back in a couple min and it will have passed.
i do it with dry ice just about every week since i get my feeders live from a local breeder. best way and probably the cheapest way to euthenize them in my opinion.

It sounds mean but look at it in the same respect if the rat was alive in with the snake. The snake wraps it up and squeezes it cutting off its oxygen. Im doing the same thing but without the hassle of the rat putting up a fight with the snake. The rat will only feel the loss of oxygen and will black out pretty quickly. Sorry that nobody agrees with me but these are purely feeders and i look for the cheapest, least time consuming, and cleanest way to put them down as possible.

Re: A Way To Euthenize
Typically a constrictor dispatches prey by constricting blood flow stopping the heart by applying and increasing constant pressure , not mere suffocation. The method you mention really makes no sense. The cervical dislocation mentioned above would be quicker, and alot less difficult than your idea honestly

Vacuum sealing an animal is a slow suffocation. It's really not as humane.
CO2 makes the animals fall asleep then die from CO2 poisoning(almost the same as suffocation, except it's humane).
Snake constriction has to do with the compression of the lungs and heart, stopping blood flow and killing very quickly. It's not at all the same as dying by having all the air sucked out of you, while you struggle to breathe for however long a rat takes to die from lack of O2(it's not fast, even a human can last up to 5-7 minutes or longer).
Also, if you did vacuum the rat, you'd take a long time to be certain it's dead, or you'd risk it waking up afterwards. So it's inhumane, inefficient, and really.. makes no sense. Either use cervical dislocation, CO2, heck.. even hitting it in the head with a hammer is at least way faster. There's really no good reason to smother an animal.

Wouldn't that result in a fair amount of blood spatter?

If I have to buy live, I whack them. You can hold the rat/mouse by the tail, and with a quick HARD flip of the wrist or even a swing of the arm, whack their head against the edge of a surface...in my case a concrete porch. Lights out immediately, no suffering. Broken neck beats suffocation any day. And it's VERY rarely bloody.
Also if it's bigger rats, med to larger, I have a 2 ft round wooden dowel, about 3 inches in diameter. I just hold the rat by the tail, and whack it with the dowel right behind the ears on the neck. Same results.

Re: A Way To Euthenize
Cervical dislocation is the cheapest easiest most humane way. Oh and by the way, please add humane to your list of options when it comes to feeders...

This is the method I use.
