Cleo does me proud yet again
Hi,
Cleo laid 6 eggies and 3 slugs this morning.

With my typical sense of timing I had been tweaking both the incubator temps and the egg tub setups last night under the illusion I had a week left before eggs were due.
I am once again trying substrateless but using a double layer of rigid mesh this time and the temps are currently holding at 89.4f.
She didn't coil most of the fertile eggs so four were arranged along the very front of the tub and may have got quite cool - and by the time I got the egg tub ready she was only coiling the three tiny slugs?!??
Once again though she acted like a true lady during the removal and cleaning process and didn't bite the big idiot once. :wuv:
She is currently 1422g so I will be offering her a mouse tomorrow night to see if I can get her started recovering.
Oh and she was bred exclusively to the little black pastel male this year so fingers crossed for a little female black pastel with great contrast and a busy pattern. :please: :please: :please: :please: :please:

Re: Cleo does me proud yet again
Thank you, :)
I'm surprised Cleo laid this year as it is the third year in a row she has done so.
I would have been happy to give her the year off but she stopped eating and started building so I figured she knew better than I did.

Re: Cleo does me proud yet again
Update,
The male corn was shedding and decided he didn't want to eat.
So Cleo just ate 2 medium mice.

Re: Cleo does me proud yet again
Hi,
If you look at the first pic you can see the slugs next to the fertile eggs.
The slugs are a lot smaller than fertile eggs, have a different look in terms of colour because they are not shelled, have no veins and, in this case, had already started to harden so felt differently too.
You can get normal looking eggs that are infertile and have no veins ( I had one in my last clutch I think ) but you also get eggs that have very few veins so you would normally put a normal sized and shelled egg in the incubator anyway even if it has no veins you can see.
You then chew your fingernails down to the elbow candling it every few days hoping veins develop. :)
If you look at eggs one and five they have very few veins visible and you could miss them on occasion.
I'm hoping the veins spread as they develop. :please:

Congrats Derek and now comes the wait :D
Crossing all the crossable fingers for a heavy black pastel females clutch :gj:
Re: Cleo does me proud yet again
Hi,
Just a candling update. :)
The two eggs that had the weak veins are coming along nicely.

And, to avoid the soggy egg bottom problem I ran into last time, I am using a double depth of grate. I am also gratefull to whomever originally showed the pictures of supporting eggs with clothes pegs - it works beautifully.

So far the incubator is holding around 89.8 - 90.1f. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

Good to hear! Wish you the best with them!

Yay!!!!
I checked the incubator for the third time so far today and saw this;

:D That sight just never gets old :D
This may be the first time in 3 years that I have been patient enough to let one pip on its own.
Just kidding - they are on day 53 and I normally don't let myself snip till day 55.

First one out, 39g, black pastel and I theeeeenk it's female.
Obviously I am a bit wary of crushing it with my big ape bananna hands but once it gets big enough I'll probe it to confirm.

Yaayyyy! Welcome to the world, little girl!
Can't wait to see the rest of the clutch!!
Re: Cleo does me proud yet again
Hi,
Someone on another forum asked me for pics of them in the egg so I sunroofed them so they could see the pattern.

The two normals have since come out ( 66g & 69g ) but the pictures I took sucked.
The other three seem to be black pastels to me. :D
I also noticed the black pastels seem to have broken nose stripes but the normals didn't - I went and checked and dad has slightly broken nose stripes in the same location.
Is this a feature of black pastels I just haven't noticed?
Or is it just random or related to the purple noses I am digging so much.

Re: Cleo does me proud yet again
Yay!
Two more of them are out - and I have a new fave.
Number 4;
http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/4...hatchling1.jpg
And the new frontrunner number 5;
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/7...hatchling1.jpg
http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/8...hatchling3.jpg
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/3...hatchling2.jpg
Slight prob though - I haven't seen penes on anything hatched so far so am now doubting my ability to pop even more.
I can't be lucky enough to hatch 5 females from a 6 egg clutch so, once they have shed, I will try again.
And can someone please persuade the remaining hatchling to come out before I start to think there is something wrong with it?

Re: Cleo does me proud yet again
Derek, my friend....you are seriously due for some good luck these days...and I have no doubt that you have hatched a little harem! :D And #5 IS a little hottie!!!

Last ones out, :D

The belly on this one is a lot cleaner than either her father or even the other black pastel siblings.
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/7...hatchling4.jpg
And I love the dark, dark eyes. :wuv:
http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/2...hatchling3.jpg
And this last shot is just becuse I thought it was cute as all get out.
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/3...hatchling5.jpg
This one looks like a girl too but I re-popped everything and the first black pastel out and one of the normals turned up male. :gj:
Once everyone has shed I will pop again but I will be waiting quite a while before probing to confirm females as I am complete woose and panic in case I hurt them when they are teeny-tiny.
