Kick in the Pants Pt. 2 :(
Found our Mojave girl on slugs this morning :tears:. We were really hoping for a Super. This is the second girl to slug out on us. Mom's doing well though so that's all that matters at this point and our male Lesser is bigger now so hopefully he'll do his thing next season.

Thank you for that imput. It was her first year too. Oh well :(
Next year :)
Re: Kick in the Pants Pt. 2 :(
What a bummer, she's a pretty girl hopefully she'll do better her next season.
Re: Kick in the Pants Pt. 2 :(
Do you cool your females?
Re: Kick in the Pants Pt. 2 :(
Bummer man! Do you think the male was shooting blanks or maybe the female not quite ready? Better luck next year.
I am currently pairing a younger Mojo pair (in hopes of supers)...Hopefully I get a viable clutch from them.

If you ever check out Ralph Davis website you will see even some of his projects slug out. I wish you luck though in the future even though I know how much this kills your spirits

She is a late '07, early '08 and was around 1,800g so she was ready to go. We had a really hot summer last year and also had two other girls slug out. After talking to other local breeders (some had the same issue) I think the ambient temps just got too high in our snake room. It wasn't a rack or food issue because they were in two different racks and one girl is an ASF eater. The other girls were on f/t rats. They went off food before ovulating and I didn't offer any after. Plus earlier in the season when the weather was great we had 4 girls lay good clutches.

No, not really. In general the room cooled at night in the winter by a few degrees but I don't change my thermostats.

Thanks! Hopefully we wont have a repeat. If we do then I know somethings not right.

Someone posted previously that slugs result from an issue with the female not the male and unfertilized eggs are due to an issue with the male. This was the first year for two of our girls that slugged out so its possible they just weren't ready. The third girl that slugged out produced a three egg clutch last year and had produced eggs for her previous owner before that. I think she may get this season off though.
Good luck with some super mojos too!

Thank you for the positive outlook! "It" happens, lol. It kind of worked in our favor, I hate to say, because we moved a few weeks later and didn't have the stress on transporting and possibly loosing the clutch of eggs.

Bummer. Sorry about your luck! As far a s the comment on cooling, I always thought the cooling was done to inspire breeding/locking. Typically, the snakes are cooled to get them wanting to breed, then once the female is gravid, temps are turned up back to normal. I doubt them not being cooled had anything to do with the female producing slugs. It was probably just her practice round :)
