    a little dissapointing...
I picked a nice normal female up for 50 bucks 3 weeks ago. she was 2500 grams so i planned on breeding her to my mojave male this season. 4 days ago a friend asked me to show her how to palpate a female. I just happened to pick this girl and almost had a stroke. 8 large follicles/ eggs. I tried pairing her with an agressive breeder pastel and got nothing. got my incubator all set up and found her on eggs this morning. this is what i got.

of the 3 good eggs, only one looks like it's fertile. I'll check the other 2 for veins again in a few days. I bought her hoping for a large half mojave clutch and instead get 1 egg that's probably just a normal :( o well, hope it goes full term and look forward to pairing her with something nice next season :)

8 follicles doesn't mean 8 eggs. From what I was told, if you feel 8, you should expect 4 eggs, because they use one side or the other to form eggs. I could be wrong, but it was a well known breeder who told me that. Feeling large follicles more indicates readiness to breed, not necasarily how many eggs, nor how many good eggs.

I hope that all 3 eggs are viable! Any good eggs is a good thing!

I got her from a local reptile store. they have gotten so many adults from people lately, there is no way for him to find out who he got her from. which is also why i got 3 nice adult females for 50 each.

Well at least you got something a lot of females will skip a year or two while getting acclimated to new surroundings.

If I can feel the follicles I normally get around that many eggs. Like if I feel 6 I will get 6-7 eggs ect. It does suck that she slugged out on you like that but the eggs you did get could be sweet little gems! Good luck with those and just keep her healthy and feeding she should go for you late next year

Maybe this is a silly question...but what about a quarantine period?

I've had the same experience as far as counting follicles by palpating vs. eggs laid. Some times I feel a mix of sizes so I only count the largest ones. But I don't palpate after ovulation so I'm not sure if one is able to distinguish slugs from fully formed eggs.

Good luck and hope you get an interesting surprise :D

Keep your fingers crossed, so far you do have something, you never know maybe you will get a really nice surprise maybe you won't. It is her first in a new surrounding so don't get too bummed. Better luck next time, and yes feeling 8 follicles doesn't exactly mean 8, it can sometimes be deceiving I've been fooled before. :colbert: Good luck and keep us updated, we're all in suspense, keep the pictures coming

I'm going to try ultrasound once a month this year, to maximize clutches and not beat up the males. I really never could count how many follicles each female has. That's just me, I guess.

When you're feeling follicles those are the amount of eggs you'll have. Sometimes you'll feel some things in the female that may feel like there are follicles there but it could be waste or urates in the body. Usually you can tell eggs/slugs especially once they've ovulated if you know what you're feeling for. You'll feel a somewhat empty space or smaller follicle when palpating.
