Something New - Pink dorsal stripe
This is a first for me, I've never seen a rat quite like this one. Is there a name for this mutation, I haven't found anything yet on it. I'm definitely holding her back though. :D (Pics just don't do it justice. She is way more pinkish in person.)

Sorry for the crappy pics, rats aren't the easiest subjects to photograph.

Lots of interesting things happen when you breed enough rats LOL.

I had some that started out with very light lavender markings on them, and they turned siamese over time. So I bred them and they did their thing, and now I have a whole line of "fader" rats.

I'm thinking about calling the mutation "All Roads Lead to Siamese" LOL.

It proved to be a dominant trait where no matter what the rat looks like as a weaner they all end up Siamese LOL.

    Its kind of comical.

My advice is to hold it back and see how it develops, what it turns into, and what type of offspring it produces.

It's a pink eye Dilute of some color, the pictures are hard to grasp it's true color but it looks like an Amber hooded to me.

The pics make her look darker than what she really is, her eyes are pink though. ;) I'm definitely holding her back, my rat colony has gotten so dull and boring and this is the first rat I produced this year (I think) that is interesting. The rest of her litter looks like her as well, but so far she is the most extreme.

It's mostly unique because the stripe is so uniform.
Very kewl looking stripe, the color isn't so unusual, but that stripe is pretty sweet.
Unfortunately like snakes with perfect stripes, their offspring don't always carry on the trait.

Getting new traits to come out in rats is the luck of the genetics lining up, rats carry lots of recessive genes, which is what the red eye rats are.
Dumbo is recessive, blue rats are too, as are satin coats and red eye, ruby eye and pink eye.
Rex coat and velveteen coat are co-dom traits, agouti is a dominate trait as is the down under gene.

Rat genetics are pretty kewl too :)

The color isn't what is surprising to me, it's the stripe. That is really odd. I've never seen a dorsal strip like that. It's not a hooded rat....very weird. You should definitely breed her back to dad if you know who that is. That stripe is perfect!

My sister had some rats that had that same color. I'll have to ask her what she bred to get it, but I do remember that its siblings were beige hoods. The stripe is awesome! Definitely hold that one back for breeding.....and send me a baby!

    Thanks yall,
Never thought about the uniqueness of the stripe since I produced a few before. However the full striped (or more like genetic stripe) rats I produced in the past, as they older the stripe blurred and became unreconizeable. This one however is maintaining its contrast very well, and with its color made it stand out more to me. I'm definitely holding her back and am going to try and figure out who's her daddy since I have 2 males.

I have two little females from my last litter that look like that. Not quite as pink, but same stripe. I may hold on to one of them. Congrats though, yours is a looker!
