If you feed your snake something too big, it will break it's ribs.

Haha, heard that one on here!

Snakes always bite the second person. Heard this from a park ranger in the Badlands, he was referring to rattlesnakes and hikers.

Strangely enough, the only rattlers I came across were lazily sunning themselves off the trail and didn't even bother to rattle.

A pet Burmese python was stretching itself out every day to see if it could swallow it's owner.

A kid in school asked me if my snakes ever do this! I told him snakes are pretty aware of what they can swallow lol.

That a ball python would/could eat children... yeah. This was in response to me adopting my ball. I politely educated them about how silly that would look to have a 7 year old child inside a 4 foot python....

kind of similar to the one above but how they will quickly take over all the southern states that would include the mountains of Georgia where snow falls might just be me but i don't see a burm surviving in freezing temps yes maybe if it got in sewer system and the sewer stayed above freezing maybe

even if they had 100 successfully hatched eggs per adult and all lived to adulthood would take a few decades at least but they make it sound like it will only take a few years at most

How about one of the most common myths, which I've read on here more than once... "Your snake will be aggressive and bite you if you feed in their enclosures." Apparently my snakes missed that memo, LOL.

Another one I've heard, "ANY snake has the potential to kill you!" Yeah, like my corn snakes could strangle - let alone swallow - a human. :D I've also been asked "Aren't you afraid they'll eat your cats/dog?" Um, no?

I actually can't wait until my boa is big enough to eat my cats......I kid.....maybe.

A couple people at work asked me how many crickets and mealworms I have to feed all the snakes. They know I keep snakes and they know I breed bugs, so I can't blame them that much.

I heard that someone got bit by their ball python and they had to get dozens of stitches and had to have dozens of teeth removed from their arm. That was told to me by my mother, talking about my cousin.

If stressed after it eats, it will regurg. Especially if it is a big meal. What's so wrong with leaving it alone to digest his meal? Do you bounch a baby after it ate? Be careful what myths we are proving here.

I didn't say I advocate bouncing the snake, I said it's a myth the snake will regurge if handled after eating, plain and simple.
I rarely handle my snakes after eating, but do occasionally especially if they spill their water or poo right after eating.
When people use this myth it's generally "don't pick up your ball after eating or it will regurge".
Of course you want to be careful handling a full snake but come on this myth is so over used and blown out of proportion.

If you touch their bellies where the prey is after they eat they will regurgitate. Once it's in their stomachs they are fine. You know how they suck it in because it "tickles".

Another myth unless your purposefully tickling the snake after it eats?

In the wild if a snake eats 20 to 30 feet from it's den I don't believe someone comes along and places them gently in their home.
The distance traveled back will result in their repeatedly moving every muscle in their body to get home. This would be far more work than the minute amount of handling one would do after a snake eats, that is unless you tickle your snake on purpose after it eats?

Many new owners do this to their snakes because they think it's cute that they're ticklish. Which is why we advise them not to handle for a day or two after they eat. Move the snake to clean and it will be fine. Excessively handle or touch the underside of a snake who has just eaten and they will regurgitate. It's not a myth.

"snakes don't feel pain" and "because they're cold-blooded, their blood is blue"

Yup, seriously. At my internship last summer, I was doing a presentation with a RTB, and some guy in the audience asked with a completely straight face "Well, snakes can't feel pain, right?" I was a little shocked and told him that they do and have nerve endings just like us... and he looked like he didn't believe me. And, on several occasions, I had people ask if their blood was blue  Kind of scary to think of the myths that get spread around and accepted as truth. Especially something like "they don't feel pain" because it could be used as further justification to hurt and kill them :(

Oh yeah, and of course I've heard the "all snakes can kill you" one many, many times. All of my friends always try to tell me that ("oh, be careful if it ever stretches out next to you!!"), and my mom keeps insisting that my bp is going to escape and eat one of her cats

a few very old wives tales
first how milksnakes got there name

it use to be thought that milksnakes would suck on cows udders to get milk cause the milks would often be found in the fields the cows grazed in and the barns the cows lived in

    second
hoop snakes it used to be thought that they would roll up into a hoop and roll away to get away from danger.

    3rd
a snake hypnotises it's prey if it looks in its eyes

    4th
Some people believe that hognose snakes (Heterodon platirhinos; also called spreading adders or puff adders) are able to mix poison with their breath and kill a person at a distance of over twenty feet

    5th
It is often suggested that rattlesnakes add one rattle every year. Contrary to this belief, a rattlesnake adds one rattle every time it sheds its skin.

    6th
Another myth regarding snake behavior is that snakes travel in pairs, the survivor seeking revenge if one is killed

    7th
A common inquiry relating to cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorous), concerns their ability to bite underwater. Cottonmouths can in fact bite underwater, as they will eat fish so they got to be able to bite underwater to catch there prey

    8th
A related myth states that injured snakes die before sundown

    9th
Many people believe that mother snakes will swallow their young when confronted with danger

thats all the myths i have heard over the years.

other thing i have were just down right stupid like snakes are slimy. all snakes are venomous. heres one that always made me bust a gut laughing. if you see a snake and don't kill it it will fallow you home and kill you in your sleep

my favorite myth is this little story :D

    1. If you are attacked by an anaconda, do not run. The snake is faster than you are.

    2. Lie flat on the ground. Put your arms tight against your sides, your legs tight against one another.

    3. Tuck your chin in.

    4. The snake will begin to nudge and climb over your body.

    5. Do not panic.

    6. After the snake has examined you, it will begin to swallow you from the feet end - always from the feet end. Permit the snake to swallow your feet and ankles. Do not panic!

    7. The snake will now begin to suck your legs into its body. You must lie perfectly still. This will take a long time.

    8. When the snake has reached your knees slowly and with as little movement as possible, reach down, take your knife and very gently slide it into the side of the snake's mouth between the edge of its mouth and your leg, then suddenly rip upwards, severing the snake's head.

i found this to be hilarious

I've heard the one about snakes sleeping with their owners and stretching out to see if they can swallow them. Some ignorant person warned me with that story one day when I was picking up some supplies for my snakes. I had one of my Balls with me (was taking him to a friend's house to do some desensitization...she's a former snake-phobic person) and the lady "helpfully" warned me that while he's small NOW, he'll get to be HUGE and will one day eat me and blah blah blah blah blah.

I just stood there and stared at her, and when she paused to take a breath, I informed her he's actually not going to get much bigger...he's almost (at the time) a full adult, and will never get big enough to eat a cat, much less ME.

She then "helpfully" told me that the person who sold him to me must have lied because ALL constrictors get huge and dangerous so you better not sleep with them in your bed because one day they'll eat you!

I seriously felt my IQ lowering due to proximity.

This is not a myth, rather a "time worn" cliche I really get tired of hearing every time a co worker or acquaintance finds out I keep reptiles, mainly snakes. I always hear "The only good snake is a DEAD snake!" To which I have begun to reply, " In another place & time it might be the snake saying that about you!"

Funny thing, no one wants to come to my house, they envision all my snakes & tarantulas run freely throughout my home waiting for the unsuspecting visitor to stop by so they have something to eat again. I've even had some ask me if I feed them small children & dogs & cats? Heaven forbid when I tell them where I keep my frozen mice & rats. Go figure!! :P:taz:

I took my big girl ball out for a stroll a few days ago. We stopped at our favorite pet store, and some guy (customer) asked me if I was buying rabbits to feed my snake. Mind you, when I say big girl she's only about 52" long and 2000 g's. I just looked at him.... look at the rabbits....my snake....and back at him. I just didn't know what to say. I kind of chuckled a little and said, "no, this is BALL python. The biggest thing she will ever be able to eat are med size rats."

He totally looked at me like I was crazy, and asked if I was sure. :O Apparently, Medusa is starving from lack of bunnies. Lol. Ignorance should be the 8th deadly sin.

Actually, most of the cobras used in that dancing "activity" are spitting cobras, but sadly their mouths are sewn shut so they can not spit, and sadly eventually die of starvation and dehydration. However, it is true that eyes are painted on the flute so they "dance" to follow the eyes.

P.S. I only know this because I went to Cancun, Mexico for vacation and went into a non-tourist town and it was being done. It's a really sad thing to watch, or even see in person.

-a corn snake can eat crickets it's whole life

-any snake can reach 30+ feet

-you have to get a priest to remove evil spirits from a snake before owning it as a pet

-owning a snake means other snakes will start to break into your house because they try to follow each other's scent

-a snake only has to reach three feet to be big enough to eat you

-if you cut off the head of a snake, the head and body both live, and will grow into two separate snakes. (did...did he think snakes were worms? I can't even... He was serious...wow)
