Worthless Pet Stores!
I know I saw a post on here recently about the poor conditions of their reptile room and forgot what all it said. Anyways, I went to the pet store today to pick up mice and notice how awful of condition almost all of the reptiles cages were in. It was simply pathetic and the animals were clearly starving, sick, dehydrated, etc. etc. I want to do something about it but don't know who I could call about it. Anyway have some advise as to who I can call and complain? I live near Milwaukee, WI.

Re: Worthless Pet Stores!
talk to the manager(s) call and make several complaints, could possibly use different names to make it seem as if more and more people are concerened, umm, idk, im sure others have better ideas on how to fix it.

Complain to the managers, and get their rep. numbers and names and then call corporate.

Calling and yelling isn't the most professional way to go about doing things. Most people aren't going to listen to someone who yells anyway. Might make YOU feel better, but it won't help the situation. ;)

I visited a privately owned pet store before and it was deplorable.
The puppies and birds and cats were ok... but the reptiles. Poor things litterally had mites crawling all over them. Every single snake was rubbing itself on whatever it could constantly to try and get the mites off.
I told the store manager and asked him to do something about it and he replied: "If you don't like it, get the hell out of my store."
I put a complaint in to animal control and never went back. I heard a few months later that they were fined for improper animal care and a bunch of their reptiles were confiscated. Serves em' right.

You could write or call your local news station and encourage them to take up the story of animal cruelty/neglect taking place in a local pet shop.

Re: Worthless Pet Stores!
same here. i have one privately own pet store where i live. but he is the only place that will sel me live feeders but his store is so nasty and all his animals are not taken good care of. all his reptiles have little cages and all there snakes are kept with two othere different types of snakes and some are living in little kritter creepers. and he sells cats for 30 dollars and there all skinny and sucked up. my gf bought a cat for her mom there and she had fleas and a week later she died. she went to a loving family always had food and water she always ate and was really loved and one morning her mom woke up and she died in her sleep. i would not recommend this store to anybody. i would rather get my snakes from petsmart or petco!

Re: Worthless Pet Stores!
Reading the posts here is depressing...I wish more people that owned/worked at these stores cared more.
I'm lucky that the privately owned store that I get all of my snake stuff at, Speck's, is really good and clean and plus the guys that run the reptile section are snake owners themselves so that really helps. I've bought 3 of my 4 snakes from this place and would buy another from them without thinking twice.

Yes, an excellent suggestion. I mean we do need more negative attention, don't we? Another place abusing animals, reptiles in particular, is just the thing we need to see on more local news casts.
Why bother with animal regulation or the humane society, NOT hsus, but the local guys who are supposed to oversee pet stores and the animals in them, why do that?
No point in it at all if you can get some TV time.
If it's a corporate store, write a letter to their main office. If it's a privately owned store, quit going and find out who the local authorities are and turn them in.

Honestly, It breaks me heart when I walk into 90% of commercial petstores. I Dont even buy my mices for my snakes there anymore, because when i walk in I immediatly feel guilty if i dont buy every single animal. And obviously thats not the right thing to do. I eventually found a breeder in my area, who had a store. If the animals arent being treated well, dont buy from the store. Its only rewarding the stores bad behavior.
Also, try buying a pet from the store, (one that requires a permit) alot of commercial pet stores, (pet co, petsmart) wont give you a permit. And if that animal dies, and you come back. Theyll easily say "You never signed a permit" that might only apply in the new jersey area. But i had bought a gracefull chameleon, and I saw it was sick when i purchased it. I tried to get him back to health and failed. I returned to the petstore with the chameleon and the man says "THIS ISNT FROM HERE GET OUT". Then my dad walked in. and well lets just say the problem settled itself.
And when you tell corporate there not giving out permits. :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r: will hit the fan..
Final point, Just dont reward local stores for bad behavior. If theyre going to treat there animals like :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r:. Dont buy from them. And tell your friends not to buy from them.

Re: Worthless Pet Stores!
I'm just curious, which shop was it? I live in Milwaukee, so I might've been to that store before. In addition, two complaints are better than one. If you aren't allowed to post the name and location of the store (some forums don't allow this), just PM me.
There are some pretty crappy stores in the area, and then some amazing ones too. It really depends on the employees and management.

Re: Worthless Pet Stores!
I had the same problem. I went to a large chain pet store to pick up dog food, and of course I had to check out the reptiles. the ball pythons were COVERED in mites. It was horrible. I went on to their website and went to customer service and emailed a complaint. The district manager ended up personally calling me and said they had cleared out the animals to take to a vet and they fired the person who was supposed to be in charge (dont know how true this was, but at least I know someone actually read my complaint)
