Mites

Okay,

i just got a normal female over 1000 grams( that's what i was told) from a friend. I put her in a rack that i got from the same friend also. When i came home from work i checked out her 41 qt tub and i seen water every where and she was in her water bowl. At first i didn't think nothing of it until i moved her in another tub. As i went to change the water i seen some dead little black bugs in her water dish. And a few was alive.

This is the first time i had a snake with mites. So what do i do? What should i get to help her get rid of the mites?

The best thing you can use to get rid of mites is Provent-A-Mite (PAM). It is made by Pro-Products and can be ordered here:

There are other treatments available, but in my opinion, Provent-A-Mite beats them hands down for effectiveness...

I agree. Ive tried other treatments and it is the only thing that has worked for me. With everything else, it would look like the mites were gone but then they would reappear in a few months.

The mites my snake had were white. Completely disinfect the tub (5% bleach 95% water solution) and change all the substrate to stop any mites from surviving inside the tub.

White mites are wood mites and are living in the substrate so that works. Black mites are reptile mites and while that might kill a few adults, that wont get rid of all of them.

i thought snake mites are red?

when a BP shed do these mites go off too since they cling to the skin???

x2...Hands down the best product out there and if you use it in a preventative manner, you'll be very happy with the results...

But the main thing is to make sure you quarantine correctly to avoid anything being passed to your collection...

Depending where they are in the life cycle, they can be red.
Yes, most of the mites are removed when a snake sheds; but there are also mites in the substrate, decorations and immediate area around the cage so shedding does not get rid of them completely.

The biggest thing you need to be concerned about is if any of the mites laid eggs. Even if you get rid of all the mites now you could have a reinfestation later when the mite eggs hatch. Get some provent-a-mite and use that :gj: I would also just use paper towels or newspaper as substrate for now. Completely disinfect everything and get some reptile relief to put on her for the time being until the provent-a-mite gets there. Once that gets there spray down everything but the snake itself and the water bowel. Mites travel to lay their eggs so I would spray the surrounding areas and such also.

What are your opinions on reptile relief?:o

It is good at killing the mites on the snake BUT not good to keep them from coming back.

any possible way you could check if your snake has mites or they just fall off when the snakes shed and thats when you know they have them?

i saw in the internet that a betadine (povidone iodine) bath helps kill mites any of you done this method?

With mites, you don't want to cost cut...P.A.M is the best and only way to go IMHO...Too much to risk with the snakes to try possible-cures or homeopathic ideas, rather than the guaranteed cures that Pounds and the P.A.M. crew have figured out...

People normally notice mites when they are handing their snake, or they see dead ones in the water bowl.

Betadine will kill some of the mites on your snake, but again, it does nothing for the mites in and around the cage or mite eggs. PAM seems to be the only thing effective in killing mites and their eggs. Everything else, you get another infestation as soon as the eggs hatch.

i use mite-off clean cage spray it and spray everything as you put it back in (including the snake ) after 2 or 3 days clean everything again (snake included but do snake in bath tub) the second cleaning gets all the dead mites off the snake and out of everything else.


i see more mites on my mice then i see on my snakes and think thats how our snakes gets the mites to begin with. don't get me wrong my mice aint loaded with mites but i hardly if ever see mites on my snakes. also anybody know of a mite spray or something that will work with mice

Rodent mites are different than snake mites and require about the same method to get rid of, except you also need to treat the rodents.

Mite-off is a waste of $$ IMO as is reptile relief.

PAM and a good ole water bowl for the snake to soak in should it like to :gj:

i see, cause the last time my BP shed i saw some mites in her soaking pan and didnt get worried since they were colored black and thinking that it was just wood shaving mites. and everytime i handle my snake i see no signs of mites and i do check her from head to toe.

after she shed i will do the betadine bath then of course, PAM.

Also I had found out that the mite eggs can even be in the snakes eye socket.

How many cages can one can cover? I am going get a can and wondered if I should get 1 or 2 cans. Is the bioshield a good thing to use?
