How to make a scent trap for lost BP?
How do i make a scent trap for a lost BP. Do i just leave a mouse/rat in a hide over night?
Re: How to make a scent trap for lost BP?
you can also set a shoe box up against the wall were you think the snake is at and place a heat pad under it. most of the time it works. its a dark warm place for the snake. but dont forget to make the hole for the snake lol. good luck trying to find your snake
Re: How to make a scent trap for lost BP?
Thanks but i do not have any heat pads available. ( I use heat lamps ) How do i go about scenting something. Is it as easy as leaving the rodent in there.
Re: How to make a scent trap for lost BP?
well for ball pythons they need more belly heat then the heat lamp. the heat lamp will reduce your humidity which is not good. i would strongly suggest you get a UTH and get rid of the heat lamp. the UTH will give you all the heat you need for your snakes cage. but you also need a rheostat/thermostat, whichever you can get. it will be alot better for you and your snake.
Re: How to make a scent trap for lost BP?
i would buy and mouse and most pet stores give you a lil box to put the mouse in with holes but you can poke more, and just leave it in the box and put it in the shoe box with the hole for your snake

ummm leave a thawed or a frozen one in there but leave it in there too long or it will smell but it might not work as well as a live mouse. you can buy a live one and once you catch your snake you can put the mouse in the freezer
Re: How to make a scent trap for lost BP?
Small critter keeper and a thawing or thawed prey item, or live

Here is the link to the care sheet, it will tell you everything you need to know. if you have any questions dont be afraid to ask. we all have questions. http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...s%29-Caresheet
Re: How to make a scent trap for lost BP?
Maybe do another thorough search?
Go back over all of the places you've searched already, then continue to look for places you haven't checked.
They love to find warm places but if they don't find one normally they will curl up in a ball and wait it out.
Good luck finding the lost one
Re: How to make a scent trap for lost BP?
I recently had a bp get loose. I just checked the house at night with a flashlight. I finally heard it fall in the closet in my bedroom and I put it back in it's cage. As far as heat lamps. I have set them up in the past on chairs with a mouse in a box and had luck a few times with that. I don't use under the tank heaters.

Re: How to make a scent trap for lost BP?
A lost ball python will search out water before food. They can go a month or more before looking for food try water first. Check around water sources, sinks, toilets. I lost a baby for a week I found him going for the kitchen sink at about 11:30 at night!
Re: How to make a scent trap for lost BP?
I've had some escaped moments. My Tank is on two small pieces of wood on a stand and once he was between the tank and the stand right at his heat pad. He found his way to the heat pad but on the wrong side of the tank.
Re: How to make a scent trap for lost BP?
I hope you find the snake. 3
Not to start a flame war on here but why would people assume just because you use heat lamps you don't read care sheets? I have used heat lamps and heat panels for years and never had a problem. Even before under tank heating was available. The use of whatever heat source is your decision. Just because it is on a care sheet that is one persons opinion doesn't mean that your snakes will die if you don't use it. The last time I checked the sun heats the ground and the snakes get the heat from the sun or the sun heated ground. As long as you maintain humidity and your snakes are healthy you are doing things correctly.
Please don't question one persons husbandy or knowledge just becasue they don't use the same heating source as is suggested from care sheets. We are all on this website for the love of raising reptiles. I have seen several different ways to do things and most of them have worked for the person that is doing it. If i am out of place I apologize. I am not doing this to make anyone look bad or calling anyone out. This is just something that has been on my mind since i read it and I feel it needs to be said.
Re: How to make a scent trap for lost BP?
I am an expert on this unfortunately. My BC got outside so.... but I scoured the net and found and used the best options. I found my BP 2 times using this method. Put a space heater near a wall. One that wont be able to burn snakey. Put several blankets in a half circle around space heater. Check them every morning and night.
I have also learned these nifty tricks. This one helped keep hope alive because I could see he was around..but he was good at getting out of it. If you are lucky it will stick to him and you can follow the trail. Leave long pieces of blue painters tape along floorboards and places you think your snakey may cross. Even if your snakey is a tape escape artist like mine, it can give you an idea of his location. Mine would have the tape all crinkled in the morning in a way that left no doubt it was him.
Put flour or talcum powder along doorways to track location and direction. If you are desperate to find your beloved, then go to the dollar store and buy about 10 big bottles and sprinkle along floorboards and doorways of entire house. Beware because it does rise and coat everything but if you need to it is worth it and you will be able to track any movement. If you suspect that your snakey has made it to the outside...don't do this. Cleanup is a little devastating at that point but if you are positive snakey is indoors then you will locate the critter. Drastic times can call for drastic measures.
If you love your snake but can't go to that extreme... put plastic baggies along baseboards and in corners. They make a loud rustling noise that snakes don't try to avoid. They even play in the bags so it is a good method as long as you are awake. If you have a limited number of bags, crumpled up newspapers also work.
If you have a basement, look in the rafters every day. They will chill up there where it is warmer and even if you look 10 times a day...on the 4th week you just might see snakey.
I left food out all the time and it never worked. Just keep looking.

Snakes prefer belly heat and heat lamps are drying, which makes life difficult when trying to make a happy constant humidity. If you have shed issues you know why.
Re: How to make a scent trap for lost BP?
I haven't had shed issue's yet. I know that if you get bad shed's your humidity needs bumped up immediately. There are just different ways to keep the temps where they should be without UTH. I have a friend with a insulated room that is in his garage on a thermostat that is set at 85 degrees. He houses many snakes and never has a problem at all. No belly heat just heat lamps in the room. He has a humidifier in the room and the humidity runs between 50% and 60% most of the time and he can bump it to 70% at max. Never has any problems with anything either. Like I said there are several ways to do things. I like it best when people give options on how they do things. There is no 1 way that things have to be done in this hobby.

Here is a link to a thread that shows another members idea for a snake trap. Hopefully it will help some in finding your little escape artist...

Re: How to make a scent trap for lost BP?
Forget the food. Put out a bowl of water with a heat pad and a hide next to it. Or look and hour after you turn out the lights. But they will go for the water first.
