hmmm tiny guy big question
:weirdface So I check the eggs through the bator lid often....there is one tiny guy out of the six that hadn't been moving as much and well through his slit his yolk hasn't gotten smaller, his movement less and the veins look weaker you could say....could this be the dreaded knotted umbilical cord? If so what would you do?
Re: hmmm tiny guy big question
has he piped at least his sack yet? if he has i would pull him out get some thread and tie a knot around the yolk this should cut off the blood flow from him into the yolk and cut offthe extra yolk ( if there is alot of blood coming out do another knot but tighter) he may still bleed a little but thats ok) put him in a tub with the others that are out just make sure its really wet in there for him and he will be fine

Re: hmmm tiny guy big question
Looks like you've mostly got him sorted. Might want to see if you can at least get him to drink?
Here's Justin Kobylka's recent vid on a firefly girl with the same problem:

he it looks like you did what i told you to some times if there very small ie: like 46grams or less it takes alot out of them and yes you want some water at the bottom of the tub it will take them a couple of hours or the next day for them to start moving around

i'm not seeing any movement though it's not getting stiff either i will leave it until it's a certain thing
Re: hmmm tiny guy big question
stupid question do you cut the umbilical cord when the babys come out of the egg or does it fall off on it own ?
Re: hmmm tiny guy big question
ideally it falls off once the yolk is absorbed, then they exit the egg.
Re: hmmm tiny guy big question
no such thing as a stupid question....I still have my fingers crossed but it's not looking good sigh the others are wiggling hopefully soon
Re: hmmm tiny guy big question
well sadly, yet not unexpectedly, the tiny guy didn't make it. it makes me wonder, being that I am in az and i am in an upstairs apt and the management isn't the best with fixing things.....there were a few times while mom was incubating that the temps spiked could this be a cause of the twisted umbilical cord and if so should I now worry about the others?
Re: hmmm tiny guy big question
As long as the humidity and Temp did not go out of range during her time, and since the others are moving I dont see a problem. Like the guy with the birth defect, sometimes things just happen.
Re: hmmm tiny guy big question
I'm sorry s/he didnt make it. :(
Re: hmmm tiny guy big question
I'm sorry your little guy didn't make it.
I was debating on waiting on an incubator for awhile and my distributor was talking to me about birth defects. I inherited a free orange belly male that my distributor gave me for free. I was there when the customer brought the little guy in and my distributor gave him to me for a good home. The poor little guy had kink issues (one in his neck, one in his tail, and the tail of him is not pointy but rounded off). My distributor told me that it has to do with spike in temp issues or birth defect.
My distributor had to leave some of his females on their eggs this year because he had so many females going all at once. He was telling me he read an article that was saying that most ball pythons will have prefectly fine hatchlings when temperatures are consistantly ranging in the 80 degree range. Don't know how well it is, but my babies stayed with momma until day 58 before I cut. They are prefect! :-)
I would vote more so that it was more birth defect than temperature. I'm sorry it took a little long for me to say just that.
Re: hmmm tiny guy big question
well sad new thanks to lovely maintenance at our apartment.....while out yesterday running errands temps in rose so high they rose it in the bator....mind you air on and fans going.......Im furious but nothing I can really do. Luckily fall will be here soon all the rattlesnakes are dropping babies earlier than I have ever seen....cold winter coming and an early fall yay no more heat issues soon now I need a name for the wee one still hanging on sex unknown so uni would be best taking any and all suggestions well for the egg and this one. RIP for all the others sad but theyre better now
Re: hmmm tiny guy big question
