    Oh My God... Graphic images
Today was a bittersweet. i had my 2nd clutch ever hatch. normalXpastel. 2 baby's hatched and the 3rd stuck it's head out. the 4th hadn't pipped so i decided to cut, i could tell immediately even with my limited experience something was very wrong. the sweet part was that all 4 babys are pastels. but sadly this 4th one was surely dead. I removed the egg from the incubator and cut the egg open to remove the snake. from the head to about 1/2 way down the body was INSIDE OUT?!?! ok wow that's weird. as i turned the snake over it MOVED! OMG this poor little thing is still alive. I could see the heart beating out in the open. has anyone ever seen this? and does anyone know what could have caused this?

here are pics of the babys

I remember reading about a baby born with the heart on the outside before, but nothing like this. I'm so sorry!

There seems to be a lot of malformed babies(overall). I've heard of a few similiar but this is the first pics I've seen. Sorry for the loss, it's never easy to end up with a baby that obviously must be euthanized.
Better luck next clutch. Great looking other babies though.

    Terrible loss, I'm so sorry.

My roommate was born with a fair ammount of her organs outside her body...it's not a totally uncommon birth defect in humans and so I guess it happens from time to time with animals, too.

very true. I feel bad for the baby but I'm looking on the bright side that my pastel male gave me all pastel babies, I hope his high output of pastels continues when i breed him this upcoming season as he will have a few more females to tend to. Can't wait for the babies to shed to see how nice they stay. the last one is still in the egg, but it's head is out and i expect it to be out tomorrow morning. so far, i'm 1.1 and the female is a feisty little thing, she bit me 6 times in the time it took to pop her lol

Just like people, all snakes do not hatch out normal. If the rest were normal, who knows what went wrong?

Unbelievable. Reminds me of spinal bifida in babies (Say nothing, Skiploder).
:( I'm sorry for your loss but congrats on the others.

So sorry for your loss. I have heard of several instances where some organs are on the outside, but have never seen it in person. I am sure it is a very difficult thing to experience.

I am glad the others are OK. They are very nice pastels. Congrats.

update: all 3 surviving babies are healthy little pastel females, fantastic odds. someone was telling me yesterday that some people believe there is such a thing as a het pastel but no one has proved it. has anyone heard about this before?

Sorry for your loss. The other pastels look great though.

Pastels are co-dominant. They are the Het form of the homozygous Super Pastel. So a normal looking ball python can't have the pastel gene, unless it's a bad browned out pastel.

I have to say I am watching my babies slowly coming head and tongue sent a couple pics to a good friend of mine both parents dubbed on here "pretty normals" and well my babies look like pastels not normals......just saying maybe theres more to it it's not an exact science after all and though mine aren't completely out yet (that's when I'll post pics) I doubt they're normal.

I fully understand that. what i heard is that some people believe there can be hets. it was just the first i heard of it and i'm wondering if other people have heard of it. as i think about it, i wonder if it can be possible. it would be nice if someone with a better understanding of genetics could chime in on this. just hear me out, what if you had a baby that inherited the pastel gene but the normal trait over rides the pastel trait. i know typically if it has the pastel gene, then it shows. but it could be possible for the gene to get hidden...

Pastels ARE hets....visible hets for the homozygous super pastel. I've not personally heard of het for pastels though.
