OK, snakes can fart, but can they sneeze???
I had my bp out and it was the wierdest thing...she made a sneezing sound! I know pretty much everyone agrees that snakes fart, but can they also sneeze????

Okay, so a kinda longer version: She was crawling on my arm and "we" were watching TV. All of a sudden, I hear a sound of a sudden-air-release, and actually FEEL the middle of her body tense for a second (like where her lungs could be-yes I've looked at snake anatomy pics...). I'll admit, at first I was like "Oh S#$%^!!! She's pooping (or peeing I guess) on me AGAIN (happened last night)!!!". Then, I realized, it she wasn't , but she was looking at me wierd. (aka kinda like she was surprised, like when starting to get into a defencive strike position.) Nothing else happend, but we stared at eachother for a few seconds before it hit me...Could she have sneezed???

I'd like to know if anyone has ever had this happen before and your opinion on whether it's possible for a snake to sneeze on you. Thanks!

i once owned a houndran that when kept on aspen would sneeze, when kept on newspaper he would stop sneezing.

BTW sneezing can mean the snake has a URI.have fun !

well that would suck. I do keep her on aspen bedding though...been thinking about switching to paper towls. Guess this is just another reason to make the switch.

Luckily she's not showing any (other) signs of a URI. Her temps are about 90-93 on the warm side, 78-83 on the cool side of her tank, humidiy 60-70%. It was also the first time I've ever seen/heard her do this, so I hope its nothing serious....I'll keep an eye out though just in case. Thanks for the heads up.

They can exhale suddenly, but they can't actually sneeze. They don't have a diaphragm muscle.
    They can't cough, either.

no. snakes cant sneeze. its impossible from what i have been told, thats why RI's are so dangerous for them. they cant cough up any mucus that gets built up in their nose, trachea, lungs or anywhere else. they basically suffocate to death.

aww...that's sounds terrible. I don't think she has an RI though...luckily.

Maybe she was sighing heavily??? :P:rolleyes:

ya lets hope not. RI's are pretty easy to recognize. head lifted (star gazing) popping sound while breathing, open mouth breathing, drooling, excessive mucus in mouth, gurgling sound. if u handle ur snakes pretty often u can tell the difference pretty easy. my normal got a really nasty RI and she sounded like a duck when she open mouth breathed

Yeah, I handle her every day and have a habit now of looking in her mouth when she "yawns"...haven't noticed anything that would point to an RI...just the sneeze/sigh/whatever you'd call it

So, if I do start noticing signs of an RI (like excess mucus or "weezing"), what do you do to make it go away in the early stages? I don't want my bps to get sick, but if they start to, I want to nip it in the bud...

    Temps : Hot side=90-93, Cool side=80-83 (degrees F)
    Humidity : 60-80%
    Substrate : Aspen

if you notice something call the vet and schedule an appointment as soon as u can. then bump up ur snakes temps 2-3* (hot and cold sides) and switch to paper towels or newspaper substrate. if the vet says ur snake has an RI then follow ur vets instructions. when ur home try to clean and disinfect ur snakes enclosure as much as possible, especially the water bowl. if ur in a tank i suggest going to tubs. my normal girl had an RI and after a lot of shots she really only improved and got better when i moved her into a tub. good luck

Thanks, I was just wondering. Like I said before, I'll keep an eye out!

PS. I already made the move to tubs and LOVE it!
