I use the 4" flexwatt. But I do have it running the length of the tub so if you do only one side you may want to go bigger

your snake still needs to be able to thermoregulate, so i would recommend running the heat tape on the warm side of the tub as opposed to the entire length.

Neither is "better" necessarily. I have used both methods successfully.

im just wondering on this because i am going to build a rack soon and i have only heard of using belly or back heat on the warm side. wouldnt it effect the gradient?

I'm not sure I get what you mean.

In a rack setup, people either use 3-4" belly heat down the back of each shelf, or back heat down the whole back of the rack using 11" heat tape.

I use the 41 qt tubs and have an 11"x12" piece of flexwatt on the rear of the shelf (providing belly heat). It is then all controlled by a Ranco thermostat.

when i read i came to the conclusion they wanted to run the heat tape down the entire length of the tub, from the warm end to the cooler end.

I hope you got tubs with locking lid tubs, the cheap white lid tubs doesn't contain snakes very well.

I use 11X12 flexwatt under the sterilite 40qt tubs, and still have to heat the room to 75ish to keep the ambient temp around 78.
Smaller flexwatt probably won't get you the ambiet temp you seek.

Ive never really seen a bp relax across the length of the tub. They always curl up on the ends. Which is why i think its best using the heat tape across the width of the tub. And for a 41qt Tub you will need the 11" stuff to be able to span the width of the tub.

Just be sure to strap the lid down or put something heavy on it, they can escape those white lid tubs, I have them in my rack also, but I don't use them for containing snakes after temporarily losing a couple :(

If you see a rack with sideways tubs and back heat you'll see the snakes lay across the back, they know where the heat is :)
I do agree with you that 11x12 inch flexwatt under the end of the tub is best, it's how all of mine are.
