Double Clutch!

Totally awesome news. :D Since I was only able to get 7 viable eggs out of Apopha's first clutch, I did a little research on double clutching to see if it was something that was possible. She was the proper weight and had taken several meals.....and having regained her strength enough, I felt that it was within the bounds of "doable". So, I introduced her to Adam again. This time, since I was in control of the situation, I was able to catch them "locked" (though I forgot to take pictures, sorry!) and was then aware that she was probably gravid. Once she went into her pre-lay shed, I knew she needed a moss box to lay in, so I got everything prepared for her, so she wouldn't have to have them in the substrate like the first time. :rolleyes: After she shed, she became highly active, looking for a way out of her enclosure and then I went to check on her and found these! 22 eggs AGAIN, only two of which look like they are probably slugs this time. I'm so excited, I can't see straight. :rofl: The two probably slugs are at the bottom of the picture and are kind of an orange-y cream color. And so...the waiting begins once more.

Ugh, no. :( I just found out last night that 4 of the 7 were just slugs. My friend (who breeds Corns quite a bit) came over to take a look at them and we candled them again. Only two were showing veins and we couldn't see through the dimpled one, so we left it alone in hopes it would hatch. We cut the four open and inside was just watery goo. So it may be that I only have two viable eggs out of that clutch....we'll see if the dimpled one hatches in the next couple of days. :tears:

Dang sorry that happened.It probably happened because your male is young and did not produce strong enough sperm to fertilize another clutch.

Oh no, the second clutch seems fine. We candled them as well and they all seemed to have veins....even the ones I thought were slugs. :confused: It's my first clutch that I've had so much trouble with. I think most of them were slugs because I didn't know that Apopha was a female. When her heater malfunctioned, I put her in with Adam for a couple of days until I could get her a new one.....so they didn't have a lot of time together. Plus, it was Apopha's first clutch ever. The two good eggs are doing well, but still haven't hatched. I upped the heat just a little bit to 83-84 and am checking on them several times a day. Hopefully it won't be too long before I have some pipping going on. :D

Ok i misunderstood :gj:.Please do not up the temp :colbert:.It should stay at 80 or it could cause the babies to have kinks or such.They will hatch dont worry :gj:

Argh! I've had so many different people telling me so many different things. :rofl: My friend said that he usually does his incubating at around 83-84. Some of the other forums for Corns have ranged anywhere from 80 to 86. I was doing mine at about 82...since it seemed a good inbetween number. :D I even had one guy tell me that he incubates at around 86. I was like: Holy cow, those little snakies had to be sweating their tails off.

Is 83 to 84 really too high? My friend breeds his Corns every year and has never had problems with kinks and stuff. But I don't want to compromise my two good eggs.

Hmm well i am just sharing my experiance and the temps i incubated at :P.

Fluctuation is the killer. Keep the temps steady throughout the incubation.

I feel its better to be on the lower end of the spectrum with temperatures, especially for incubating. They can handle a wide range of temps, but once you get to a certain threshold on the upper end, it can spell disaster.

I incubate mine at room temp in the top of a closet. Temp is 76-78º (when they're first laid in April/May, its cooler; now that its August room temp is about 78-79), so it doesn't really fluctuate, but just slowly increases a few degrees over the course of a couple of months. 82º is good, but I personally wouldn't go any higher than that.

Excuse my ignorance, but what comes out of a snow to a abbotts okeettee morph? Sounds like it could be interesting.

Just a little update on my first clutch. My two good eggs still have not yet hatched. I've been checking on them a couple of times a day, keeping them moist (but not overly so) and waiting for the telltale signs of pipping. I still feel like a dolt for having incubated 5 slugs....but honest to goodness, they really looked like viable eggs when they were first laid. :rolleyes:

Anyway, I am keeping the camera handy and will get some pics of the pipping when it finally happens, provided they pip during the daylight hours and not while I'm asleep. :rofl: I'll keep everyone posted!
