Webstaurant tubs
Has anyone used the high density tubs from webstaurant.com? It looks like there are ridges lining the bottom but can't really tell by the pictures on the site. The tubs seem very well priced, 3.18 for 12 or more, compared to the mason tubs at home depot being almost 7 dollars a piece. I suppose even with the ridges if I have problems with chewing, which I don't with most of my rats, I can fabricate up a liner for the bottom. Just wondered if anyone had any info on these and what they thought about them.
Thanks\
Josh
Oh yeah here is the link

Re: Webstaurant tubs
We use those exact tubs and they can and do chew the bottom..But a simple sheet metal bottom pop riveted to the bottom fixes it..

Re: Webstaurant tubs
Thanks for the quick response. I did buy a dozen to see if they would work or not. I figured I could fab up something to go on the bottom that would stop them. Do you have any pics of your setup? I would love to see it.
Thanks Again

Re: Webstaurant tubs
I got mine from their website and the picture shows a ridge on them. When they came, they looked like this:

I got these back in the beginning of June from their website. I house my ASF's in them and have never had a chew out. There nice and heavy duty.

Re: Webstaurant tubs
they are garbage, buy the mortar tubs from home depot.

Haha they are both made from the same material (polyethylene) genius...If they can chew one, they can chew the other

Dont really see why you had to be such a smart *** about it. Not really at all neccessary.
But to comment on the mortar tubs, most people breeding rats or mice use the mortar tubs because they are pretty heavy duty and stand up to the rats and mice very well. Yes they are made of the same material, but do you know if one is thicker than the other? Im thinking the mortar tubs are thicker than the restaurant tubs.

Re: Webstaurant tubs
I wasn't being a smart *** at all. Just pointing out the obvious.

Re: Webstaurant tubs
It isnt really about what material they are made out of, or how thick they are. This is about the redges in the botom. These ridges make it easier for them to get their teeth started into the plastic. I personally don't think I would buy them, without preparing to fabricate something to the bottom. (Freakie_frog, do you have any issues with cleaning the tubs with the extra stuff in the bottom?) I use the simple mortar tubs from Menards. They have no ridges. I have still had a chew out. The mom chewed, and the baby got out.... since she has gone, there have been no more problems.

irrelevant, mold/end shape is different.

you are correct, it is about their shape.
the lowe's MacCourt units are thinner and large than the Hoem depot units. I prefer the Home depot units because they will not dent over time.

wow since you are so intelligent then you will fully understand that polyesters do not gain their linear strength via thickness, they gain it through orientation of their fibers. Linear strength is not what resists chewing. Not allowing a rats to chew, prevents chewing. It has been recorded that rats can chew through MANY metals much thicker, stronger and harder than any of these tubs. So in your super intelligent observation, none of these tubs will work.

Re: Webstaurant tubs
To be honest I didn't want this to turn into a pissing match. Thanks for the comments. I bought these due to their price and the fact that the mortar tubs at home depot and lowes both have the new hanging hole in the sloped end. I figured that this would allow easy access for chewing and create an easier route than the ridges in the bottom. I can fab something up to block the bottom but any time you fill a hole they will just find a spot and rechew the hole out. Thanks again for all the input.

I will tell you that we have whole racks that never get chewed..then we have whole tubs of rats that make it their mission to chew out...the rats have as much to do with it as the tub.. Best of luck..with a little alteration they should work great

easy solution to that is to buy a roll of "metal hanger" from the hardware store and make a patch. Ask for it in the plumbing section.
Never seen the "hanging hole" in the ones sold at Lowe's. They are made by different companies.

Re: Webstaurant tubs
i too get my tubs from lowes. 26x20 or something to that effect, no holes in them
-
Re: Webstaurant tubs
I use and prefer Home Depot tubs.
I haven't had a chew out by regular rats because mine don't chew.
But that hole in the front makes it chewable.
The way around that is a sideways rack where the hole is on the end covered by wood so it isn't reachable by teeth.

Touche....Someones done there homework I see. All I'm trying to say is I've been using these tubs and they work great. You simply stated they were garbage so I simply stated they were made of the same material as the ones you mentioned. I've never used the ones from home depot because they are a little too big for my closet in my apartment but but I've heard good things about them.
Suzuki sorry bro

Re: Webstaurant tubs
It all comes down to whether or not your rats will chew the tubs. I kill every chewer. It is genetic. I don't care what anyone says. If they have plenty of food and water and they're not overcrowded and they start chewing they are dead for me.

I agree I do the same, I have no chewer's and no biters, they kept my snakes warm for a moment or two.
-
Re: Webstaurant tubs
I had some problems with chewouts early on and I started experimenting.
Instead of a standard "rack", I essentially have a 1/2 wire cage (4 sides and hinged lid made from 1/2" hardware cloth) that sit in the tub. Eliminated chew outs completely as they won't chew out of the bottom.
The only negative so far is that occasionally a 1-2 day old pinky will get themselves stuck. I've only lost a few because of this. Once they get a few days old they are usually too big to get themselves stuck.
It probably takes me a couple extra minutes overall on cleaning day but not that big of a deal IMO.

We sell the as boa food or as pet's..some times we do have to put them down. Since rats are social animals and learn from each other if you have one chewer it will teach the others and before long the whole tub is teaching every other tub and you have a problem..

I don't understand how you could use wood to cover the hole.

I was trained in France to work on blow molds years ago. I know a bunch of useless to general society information like that

so you killed all the rats you got from me then? I have a highly specialized chewing school they must all have passed.
They don't chew fiberglass I have learned(so far so good anyway)

Re: Webstaurant tubs
ummm okay, I don't see how that stops them but if it works for you, cool
I setup my a prototype rack with metal strap in the hole/slot and it blanks out most of the slot with metal.
-
Re: Webstaurant tubs
It isn't exposed as much, but it is probably still chewable if they are persistent.

Re: Webstaurant tubs
Well I got my tubs in and built my rack. I will have to get some pictures later. I built the rack to hold 20 bins but only bought 12 because thats how many I needed t oget the dicounted price and wasn't really sure if they would be what I wanted. I opened the box and was amazed to see that they must have changed the mold as the ridges in the bottom are just small halfmoons that I don't think anything (including my little chewing maniac ASF's) can get their teeth on. They did take some small modifications on the sides as there is reinforcement tabs all along the side that need trimming. But all in all for the price not bad I guess. I think they are a little on the small side though and probably will only house 1.2 maybe 1.3 but I figure it will work good for the mothering tubs. Thansk for everyone's input.

Yea those half moons are what I was talking about when I posted that pic. Did you snap all those tabs off like I did?

Re: Webstaurant tubs
I have rats, I have mice, and I have ASFs. In 3 years, I have only had one incident of minor tub chewing by a rat. I fed the rat off. The end.
I use the Freedom Breeder racks with 2 different types of tubs they make. The larger clear ones are sort of flimsy--they still don't get chewed.
It's not that they can't get their teeth on the upper rim--they can. They just don't.
I can't explain it. lol

Re: Webstaurant tubs
you guys need to breed more rats I guess.

Sorry I am not up to your higher ranks of breeding rats yet. I thank all those whom have had some insightful responses and I hope that I don't breed to many rats to have them chew out of my cheap tubs. I have 20 breeding females now and think I should be good for awhile. Do you guys who are still at my level use a 2x2 in between the racks for supporting the screen underneath? I am still wondering what the crossbar is that I always see in the pictures of the racks.

the more you have, the less time you have to deal with "little things" like tubs that can work. You start looking for efficient ways to breed better animals at lower prices and setups that require less time. Your small 1.2 tub rack can support as many females as 1/3 of my much larger rack. And yes I understand if you don't need that many, but the advice given is always to my best intent to allow you the information to make your setup work best and not just "work".
If you want to waste time and energy on setups not recommended, that is completely cool. We all experience trial and error sometimes to learn. But don't get an attitude because somebody has "been there, done that" and is trying to save you headaches.

I used 2x2 for everything except the runners. I used 1x2 for them.

I have it kept in my closet so I have rope lights that are on a timer that way they have a day/nite cycle. This is a pic when I was testing out different hopper setups and as you can see on the second rack from the top, I boxed in a little area. I ended up putting those on every level and this rack works great for me. Good Luck!

Your comments are a little condescending and make it a little hard to take in what you are trying to get across.
Eric, The 2x2 bar that runs inside the tub area, uh I guess, on the top of the screen. Is that for supporting the screen or just seperating your food area? I guess I still don't understand what creating that little square area up front is for.

the center supports are to keep the wire from sagging over time
some people section off "food areas" so they can stack food and simulate a "hopper" situation. If food is scattered then you lose air flow (which is the big benefit of a rack system). Plus if food is scattered it can go to a back corner out of reach and begin to mold.
-
Re: Webstaurant tubs
Wll this is where trial and error came in. I originally did it for the food but when you have that much food across the top, the little B*sterds chew it all up into powder and a lot gets wasted. I came up with those little square where every 3 days or so, I will throw a scoop of feed in.
If I were you, I would put the support bar in still but more in the middle. This way your screen stays nice and tight with no sag.
