BP Comfortable?
This might be a stupid question but the only truly stupid questions are the ones not asked. But anyway I'm looking to buy my first ball python and I feel its important to make sure I get it as a baby. Does it make a difference if I get a baby or adult how it will act towards me? I believe if the bp was around me since it was a baby it would be more comfortable around me as it grows compared to a bp that I received already fully grown. Any info is greatly appreciated.

I know how you feel I dont like buying adults, I want to get that satisfaction that I raised it up. Plus if you buy an adult you dont really know your boundries with the snake, after a month with a baby you will figure out when your snake wants to be held, or dosnt want to be held. I dont think your snake will really be "comforatble" around you, it may or may not have been held by its previous owner, you may have to hold him to he/she can get use to it.
Wish you the best of luck!

Get a baby. You can get adults that have been handle and are super calm, but then you would miss all the experience of watching it grow. Go with a young one :)

Babies generally feel less comfortable around everybody. Nearly every snake I've ever had gets calmer as an adult no matter how much it's been handled. However YOU may feel more comfortable initially with a smaller snake.
But unless you know the background and source of the adult, I would still recommend a baby. You really wouldn't want to get stuck with a wild caught adult, but if the adult is a long term captive that's been somebodies pet for many years, it can be the better choice especially if you can get information from the previous owner about the snakes personality and idiosyncrasies.

Re: BP Comfortable?
I've acquired animals from babies to adults. I don't see a difference in their level of comfort with me. Some of my favorites are animals that I acquired as adults.

Where do you live? I'm sure there is a breeder or two near you so you could get one without the added hassle of shipping.

Re: BP Comfortable?
i started with babaies and loved watchin them grow it WAS GREAT ..... but i have 2 adults i adopted and they are awesome to see both ends but babies are the best way to go after just a little while you read body language and you are used to it , adults take awhile and you need to question the owner to find out their habbits

Re: BP Comfortable?
I think I've had balls for two and a half weeks now. They just kinda fell into my life. Having a baby might be neat, and eventually I plan on buying one. However having adults hasn't been bad. For one, most of them are eating. So I didn't get thrown into the world of "I have a new baby ball python that won't eat, what do i do?". We force fed a male pinkies to get him used to eating again, and guess what last night we assist fed a hopper, and he ate the next three all by himself with no help needed. That feels great. I was jumping up and down, I swear I must have felt the same way my mom did the first time I made honor roll... like wow my snake just did something very special! That in reality is very normal. =)
I'm learning how to move around my different snakes, like three of them don't care how you pick them up. Two of them bite, so you have to put one hand in where they can see it (she will then head towards that hand to bite), hol them up about 6-8 inches from the head, and then scoop up the rest with the other hand. (It only took getting bitten once to figure that technique out.) Luckily they don't double back and bite me when I pick them up.
I guess I feel lucky to have them and I want to make their lives better. They are also teaching what to do and what not to do, so maybe when I buy a baby things will go smoothly. =)
