What to expect from a BP bite
I haven't had my ball for long, but I've been told to expect to be bitten at least once. What should I expect from a ball python bite? and how should I handle that kind of situation?

Dont try and rip ir fimger out of its mouth if it holds, most of the time it will strike and release, clean it well and dont panic, its usuLly like a few pins hitting at the same time, try to avoid being bitten by reading your BPs body language also

Expect it to be a letdown. When it finally happened it was so anti-climatic! Being bitten by a rat is so much worse!

I've had my BP for about two months now and recently got my first bite. Mine is about a year old, so still very small. The bite was laughable. I actually laughed at the snake because it was such a small bite, didnt hurt at all lol!

I kind of deserved to get bitten, I was trying to get off a stuck shed from the tip of his tail and was being very persistent and he lost his patience. So he turned around and stuck my hand that was pulling on his tail. He got me in the thumb, and it hurt less than if someone were to pinch you. I am diabetic and have to test my blood sugar with a meter. If you are familiar with this at all, it means you have to prick yourself with a small needle and squeeze out a drop of blood. The snake bite hurt less than that and I had a very teeny tiny drop of blood where he got me.

Now I'm sure there is a difference between a strike (like what I experienced) and a bite where they latch on, like a feeding response. But I doubt that would happen unless you smelled like food.

Overall, my experience with bites has not been painful at all!

Edit: I also wanted to add that it is startling just because its quick. And i've heard that if you are bitten to not put your ball away immediately because that teaches them they can bite you to get rid of you, not sure if that is true or not.

Totally..Ball bite's while they do pinch and sting aren't near as bad as rat bites..

See the gore that happens from a Ball bite..

Depending on where you get bit.

    This will hurt.

Most Ball Python bites will scare you more than hurt you. Some blood may flow. Commonly caused by the human trying to pull the appendage away while the snake still has a firm grip with it's teeth.

Don't sweat it. When it happens, your heart will race, then you start thinking, "that didn't hurt that much".

    Good Luck!

Just please don't try to pull away if it does latch on. Ride it out and let the snake realize it can't eat you, because you could damage it's teeth and it probably will never eat again if teeth are pulled out.

Mostly, it will be a disappointment. If you are like me, you get yourself all nervous and worried about a bite.

"Is it going to hurt? Will it bleed ? What if it won't let go ? How bad is it going to be ? "

When it finally happens, most likely it will go something like this:

"It bit me! Oh my gosh my snake bit me!"

"At least, I think it bit me, I don't see anything."

"It did bite me, didn't it ?"

"Now I wonder if I imagined it, it didn't hurt, and I don't see anything."

Or you'll just start laughing like I did. Thinking, THAT is what I was so worried about?

With a BP, it just scares you more than it hurts. After you calm down you'll think, "oh...thats it?"

Although, having a 6ft burm mistake your hand for food and clamp on and wrap itself up your arm...totally different story! Definitely learned a good about making dumb mistakes from that one!

I've been tagged several times, but I've never had one try to hold one. Generally it's pretty harmless-- it'll feel like a quick needle poke. If it's just a warning strike, not a feeding error, you might not even bleed.

I did have my sweetest animal nab me once when I stupidly stuffed my hand in during feeding time, and then I had to help him get one side of his lower jaw loose. He wasn't TRYING to hold on--I think he was more panicked about getting stuck to my finger than I was. But their teeth hook backwards, the same as most snakes, so if they get stuck, you'll have to pull the jaw FORWARDS to get them off without tearing skin or loosing any teeth.

I've noticed bp bites are really clean? I usually wash the wound, but I typically have a hard time finding the bite the next day, even if I've forgotten to apply antibiotics. Whereas cat bite/scratches always always ALWAYS seem to get infected and horrible the next day, no matter how mild they seem at first.

This was my big BP bite from last year. The baby boa tagged me a few times but it wasn't even worth taking photos of. Look at it this way. Tattoos hurt worse, puppy teeth hurt worse, cat claws hurt worse, a wasp sting hurts waaaaay worse. Just wash it off with soap and water, put a little Neosporin on it and it will heal in a day or two...
